The stables- Wednesday after classes
After class, Susan went for a walk around the dorms. She was feeling more put off by her strange visitors than she would like. She often found herself looking for them, or listening for the sound of skeletal feet against the floor. She realized this was ridiculous. She could not possibly be looking for a raven and the Death of Rats. That would be silly.
These thoughts weren't improved when she found herself back at the stables, same as last night. Worse, she stopped there. She didn't know what exactly she was stopping for-
Something blew in her ear.
The white horse stood in the middle of the yard like a bad special effect. He was too bright. He glowed. He seemed like the only real thing in a world of pale shapes. He neighed softly and nuzzled Susan's hand.
You're Binky, she thought. I know you. I've ridden on you. You're... mine. I think. I remember the stable. So big you couldn't see the walls. And I was given a ride on you once. Someone held me so I wouldn't fall off. But you couldn't fall off this horse. Not if he didn't want you to.
He wore no saddle, but that didn't stop Susan from hauling herself up onto his back and taking him for a ride. He seemed to know exactly what to do, and then he found something to jump-
Susan didn't realize that once he did that, he didn't exactly touch ground again.

That did not mean she did not miss Fatima and Diablo, or the comfort their daily rides gave her. And so it was on Wednesday, after a particularly trying weekend, that she found herself wandering to the stables, hoping to be soothed by the presence of the horses themselves.
What she saw, instead, was a horse the likes of which she never could have imagined. So white that it appeared to glow. So fast that it seemed its hooves did not touch the ground.
Forgive Lucrezia if all she could manage was to stare, awestruck.

You know. Walking on air.
Not that Susan realized this yet. She thought maybe Lucrezia just liked horses. "Hello."

"Sorry," she added, a smile working slowly over her face. "I don't mean to interrupt. He's magnificent."

She still wasn't exactly sure what was going on, no.

She approached carefully, biting her lip. "May I pet him?"
'Pet' seemed the wrong word; he was a proud and majestic horse. But she wished to stroke his nose, if the noble beast would allow it.

Binky, for his part, didn't seem to mind a little bit of petting.
"He's an old friend." Which really did feel like the right answer.

"I've never seen anything quite like him," she added. "What sort of horse is he?"
Perhaps all horses in the New World looked like this. And she had thought her Arabian mare to be gorgeous.
no subject
"His own kind."

She stepped aside, ceasing the stroking of his nose, that she might no longer be standing in the way quite so directly.

"He does look like a Binky," she decided.

Something with twelve more syllables, and titles thrown in, perhaps.
"How is it that he's floating?"
no subject
Susan looked down.
Well. This was interesting.

"They say you learn something new every day," she reasoned, sliding off Binky's back onto the ground.
