Ben was trying to catch up on the news from home through his laptop, but his research into Tahiri's new lawyer kept getting interrupted by annoying pop-up advertisements for sales on women's clothing.

"That was one weekend," he snarled at the computer, "and I wasn't me!"

The shop was open! Ignore the grumbling.

If Ender knew what was going on, he'd be facepalming at Jane right now.

As it was, he was coming in with two coffees and a bag of sandwiches, as per usual, taking one glance at Ben's expression-- "So what peed in your drink today?"

Very occasionally, that whole 'thinking he was funny' thing Ben did rubbed off.

"I need to update my pop-up blocker," Ben grumbled, shooting his computer another glare.

Ender shot the computer a disapproving look.

No, he wasn't going to go into why. Let Ben take it as solidarity. "What is it this time?"

Ben's cheeks heated. "Clothing advertisements," he said. "But for...dresses and stuff."

"Ah, Google Ads has failed," Ender said, stepping around the counter to get a look as he set Ben's coffee down. "Maybe someone's been force-feeding your computer false adwords."

Ben gave him a look. "And I thought I hadn't done anything recently to upset you."

"Please," Ender said, "If I were trying to get back at you for something, I'd be a bit more creative than this." He waved at Ben's screen.

Ben wondered for a second if the screen was going to wave back.

"What would you do instead? Hypothetically."

"Wouldn't you like to know," Ender said, reassuringly, and took a sip of his coffee.

"I just want to know if I need to build myself a giant plastic bubble to live in," Ben said, grinning. "I think Topher might want one."

"He does seem a little jumpy," Ender said, going back 'round the counter so he could sit down. "I figured that wasn't completely Peter's fault."

"He's blaming Tony," Ben said, sounding a bit amused, "for using him so callously."

"So Tony being Tony," Ender surmised, "It's like one big mutual freak-out-slash-repression-fest."

Jaina had only left yesterday morning, technically, but it was really three days before she got a chance to give Ben a call, since she hadn't been able to see him over the weekend.

Timelines were a pain in the ass.

But hey, call!

"It's Ben," Ben replied, picking up his comlink.

She was so used to hearing last names as a greeting she actually paused before saying, "Hey, kiddo. It's Jaina."

Ben had to check his comm to make sure he knew which one he was talking to before he asked if Jag had said yes to letting her borrow a fleet.

"Hey! I'm glad you're not married to Tony's dad."

"You know, I just went several days happily repressing that," she told him.

"At least my roommate's not your in-law?"

Not helping, Ben.

"At least you're not still shot?" she countered.

[momslilassassin]

"And no one's trying to blow up our non-existent diamond mine?" Ben added.

"I can only assume I wasn't invited because Grandfather disowned me," she mused.

"Again?" Ben teased.

"Hush, you," Jaina smiled. "So I guess I don't have to ask if you've found your sense of humor about the weekend..."

"Well, I kind of have to. That other guy spent the whole time crying and blaming things on Taiwanese hookers," Ben replied.
