Freddie had something new, something amazing.

A Trudge Master '51 model train. And he could tell you exactly what made it differ from a '52 model. He was setting up the track on a coffee table in the common room, the TV showing a rerun of a Lightning Bug episode. Not that Freddie planned on running the train. He just wanted to see how it looked all hooked up.

He missed his train club from back in Seattle. The rest of The Training Bros were probably all having fun without him. But he had a Trudge Master '51, so that made up for it just a bit.

Sam was out scavenging for food again. She would have made a beeline for the fridge, as was her wont, but she was pulled up short by the sight of what Freddie was setting up on the coffee table.

"Wow. Just when I thought you could not get any nerdier."

Freddie looked over at the strange teen and raised an eyebrow. "I'm guessing you watch iCarly?" he said, a little confused as to that greeting.

Sam blinked.

Ohhhhhh, this could be fun.

"Well, duh, it's the best show on the internet. That brunette's pretty cute, huh?"

Sam was so failing "Don't Be Evil" this weekend.

"Yeah, definitely," Freddie said, smiling a bit. "Carly's a lot of fun to hang out with, too." Total brag there, really. Freddie was doomed in this conversation. "And she... okay, she really only is half-responsible for the writing, Sam does a lot of it, too."

"Doesn't surprise me. She seems pretty cool." Slick, Sam. Totally slick. "So what's with the trains? Aren't you worried Sam'll see 'em and beat the chiz out of you?"

She totally wasn't trying to subtly pick Freddie's brain for what he thought of her, shut up.

"If Sam wants to beat me up, she'll take anything as an excuse to do it," Freddie said. "She doesn't do it all that often. She finds other ways of making me suffer. I think it's, like, a game to her. 'What weird thing can I do to Freddie now?'"

"That . . . kinda sucks." Sam wasn't too grudging in admitting that. "Why do you put up with it? Just for the internet fame?"

"Cause we're friends," Freddie said, and meaning it. "I mean, yeah, for normal friends the amount of teasing and stuff is way over the top, but I'm kinda used to it."

He shrugged. "Besides, it means no one else picks on me, because she totally doesn't want anyone else messing with me. And she'll make them stop."

"You mean that?" He liked her! He thought they were friends! Why was her heart going wibbly at that? She scowled. "Dangit, Benson!" She grabbed what looked like a just a block of wood from the coffee table and flung it at his head.

Then realized she possibly just blew her cover.

"You have a train," Richie observed as he walked in. "That is yours, right?"

His roommate had a tiny train set up in the common room. Was this something to be worried about?

"Yep, it's a Trudge Master 51," Freddie said proudly. "You can tell, because if it was a 52, it'd have six rivets instead of four on the front plate."

At least Freddie hadn't set up the train in their room. Their room was not big enough for two teenage boys and a tiny train.

"If you say so," Richie said. "I don't know anything about it. I wanted one of these so bad when I was like, 8, but I never got it. Not the sort of thing you buy for a kid who isn't even yours. Is this new or have you been hiding it for months waiting for just the right moment?"

"It's new," Freddie explained, all happy to discuss it. "I was missing my old train club, so I decided to order one just to feel like I was there. But... all alone. I'm totally planning on having milk and fig nooters later."

"Train club?" Seriously?

"You hang out and talk about trains? On a regular basis?" Who knew? Well, whatever. Trains were harmless, right?

"Yeah, and make sure our trains are all as historically accurate, and build the little scenery, that sort of thing," Freddie said, all with a sense of pride. "It's a lot of fun."

"I'll have to take your word for it," Richie said. "Not really my sort of thing." Although the little tiny train was kind of neat.

"Yeah, I know it's not for everyone," Freddie said. "But if you let me, I will talk your ear off about all the little details, so I'd be careful." He chuckled, at that. "So, have you been having a good weekend?"

"Weekend was okay," Richie said. "Low key. Yours was good, right? With the train and all?"

"Oh sweet chiz, tell me you aren't another train enthusiast."

"Nah, not me," Richie said. "Never had a train in my life. Wanted one when I was little but it just never showed up under any tree."

Sam could understand that. She mostly got hardware for Christmas.

"Helps if you look under Christmas trees and not just random trees in the park."

Just because she understood didn't mean she couldn't also mock.

"Damn," Richie said, shaking his head. "I knew I was doing it wrong. Wish somebody'd told me that back then."

"They were probably too busy laughing at you behind your back," Sam said sagely.

"Kids who look for presents under park trees deserve all the laughs they get," Richie replied. "Right?"

"Well, I'd say so, but I say that about pretty much anybody."
