Kappa Delta Gremlin Meeting, First Floor Rec Room [after classes]

The rec room had the usual table of snacks and drinks. It also had, in addition to long sheets of paper and a mound of markers and paint, glitter.

Lots of glitter.

No-seriously-did-somebody-spill-that-or-is-it-here-on-purpose amounts of glitter.

"Parents' weekend is this week," Quinn said, with just a little sullen pout to show how she felt about the fact that, as far as she knew, nobody was coming for her. "Which means we want to present the school at its best. Which means today, we're making welcome banners so theevents have a little extra sparkle."

Or, you know. A lot of extra sparkle.

"Glitter makes everything better," Rilla agreed, reaching into his basket to take the rattle from Jims' hands and wipe it off. "Well, other than baby toys."

That can't be hygienic.

"Besides, we don't want the guests getting lost and wandering accidentally into the bar with the smelly band members, do we?"

"Unless your guests are into that," Quinn pointed out lightly.  "Or if you think they'll take the island better after a drink or two. In which case, maybe pick their seating carefully."

Rilla nodded. "Away from the space ship parking. I learned that last year."

The snacks might be glitter free, but when Annie reached toward the table, she found that there was glitter on her hand already.

She hadn't even touched anything yet!

Rosella was looking longingly at the table of snacks, wanting to just consume nearly everything, but knowing that there were only a few days before her mother showed up, and she knew her mother would likely comment on something to do with corsets if she kept eating as much as she had been. So she was going to be good and just indulge a little for right now (and a little bit later) and focus on helping with the decorations.

Maybe enough glitter would blind Valanice into not being able to focus on everything Rosella was doing wrong.

Elphaba eyed the glitter warily.

"Surely there's a better way to draw attention to the banners?" she said out loud, though she quickly realized she didn't have an alternative suggestion.

Other than fire.

Unaware of Elphaba's thoughts, Sov asked: "Do you have any ideas?"

Re: Arrive and Mingle [9/27]

[identity profile] didntchewgrass.livejournal.com 2011-09-27 05:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Elphaba paused for a moment, thoughtfully. Then realized no, she didn't have other ideas.

"The signs could be on fire?" she offered.

[identity profile] child-of-rer.livejournal.com 2011-09-27 05:59 pm (UTC)(link)
"Won't they just burn up then?" Sov asked, being practical. "But if not, I think that'd be nice."

Re: Arrive and Mingle [9/27]

[identity profile] didntchewgrass.livejournal.com 2011-09-27 06:00 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well... probably," Elphaba admitted. "Though we could set torches or large candles near them, maybe?"

She sighed. "I just don't like the glitter."

Re: Arrive and Mingle [9/27]

[identity profile] child-of-rer.livejournal.com 2011-09-27 06:14 pm (UTC)(link)
"I like that idea," Sov said. "But I don't really mind the glitter. Why don't you like it?"

Re: Arrive and Mingle [9/27]

[identity profile] didntchewgrass.livejournal.com 2011-09-27 06:21 pm (UTC)(link)
"It seems rather... shallow," Elphaba said. "Shiny silver for the sake of shiny silver."

Re: Arrive and Mingle [9/27]

[identity profile] child-of-rer.livejournal.com 2011-09-27 06:32 pm (UTC)(link)
A curious thing to say, Sov thought. "Should things only be shiny for a reason?" Sov asked with genuine interest.

Re: Arrive and Mingle [9/27]

[identity profile] didntchewgrass.livejournal.com 2011-09-27 06:51 pm (UTC)(link)
"I don't see why they need to be shiny at all," Elphaba said, a teeny bit deflecting. "If it's just pretty to look pretty, there's no need for it at all."

Re: Arrive and Mingle [9/27]

[identity profile] child-of-rer.livejournal.com 2011-09-27 06:59 pm (UTC)(link)
"You don't like pretty things?" Sov asked. "I guess there can be too much of it and it becomes distracting. There's a lot less of glittery things at home, but I kind of like it."

Re: Arrive and Mingle [9/27]

[identity profile] didntchewgrass.livejournal.com 2011-09-27 07:23 pm (UTC)(link)
"I wouldn't say I don't like them," Elphaba said. "But I would say people tend to... overvalue them."

She had her own particular biases, here.

Re: Arrive and Mingle [9/27]

[identity profile] child-of-rer.livejournal.com 2011-09-27 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
"You do?" Sov thought that sounded a little like something the Handdara Indwellers. "And what do they undervalue?"

Re: Arrive and Mingle [9/27]

[identity profile] didntchewgrass.livejournal.com 2011-09-27 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
"Those things that have true worth but aren't pretty," Elphaba said. "To many judge on whether the appearance is appealing, instead of what things have inside."

Re: Arrive and Mingle [9/27]

[identity profile] child-of-rer.livejournal.com 2011-09-27 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
It sounded like Elphaba spoke from experience. "Of course there are things like that. I just don't think that those things excludes enjoying pretty things." They paused, hesitating a little, then said: "Were you thinking of something in particular that's been overlooked?"

Re: Arrive and Mingle [9/27]

[identity profile] didntchewgrass.livejournal.com 2011-09-27 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh, no, nothing in particular," Elphaba said, deflecting again. "Just an... unfortunate trend I see. But I suppose you're right about it not necessarily excluding the appreciation of beauty."

Sov found that the glitter stuck to their skin. And their clothes. And their hair.

"Does it go away?"

Re: Arrive and Mingle [9/27]

[identity profile] chief-cheerio.livejournal.com 2011-09-27 06:19 pm (UTC)(link)
"If you take a really hot shower," Quinn suggested, looking at her own glittered hands in dismay. "at least, I'm really hoping it will."

Re: Arrive and Mingle [9/27]

[identity profile] child-of-rer.livejournal.com 2011-09-27 06:35 pm (UTC)(link)
"Perhaps it will end up sticking to all the visitors," Sov replied cheerfully.

They were a little disappointed that no one would come and visit them. No, not just a little. They were very disappointed, but there was no way they would let that show.

[identity profile] chief-cheerio.livejournal.com 2011-09-27 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Quinn snorted. "A little piece of Fandom for them to take home with them," she tried. "I like that."

She glanced around. "I swear it didn't look like quite so much glitter when we were setting up."

Re: Arrive and Mingle [9/27]

[identity profile] child-of-rer.livejournal.com 2011-09-27 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)
"Perhaps because it's sticking to everything?" Sov guessed. "Unless it's multiplying."

Re: Arrive and Mingle [9/27]

[identity profile] chief-cheerio.livejournal.com 2011-09-27 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
"That's what the island needs," Quinn decided. "Glitter that can breed."

Hanna was a fan of glitter. In small doses. When it got in her hair and all over her designer bag, that's when she had an issue with it.

Mercy wasn't at all sure about this glitter thing.

Angelica tried to avoid the glitter but ended up getting it all over herself anyway. Oh well, she could probably vaporize it with her powers later. Maybe.

Caroline didn't know why there was so much glitter, but she was okay with it so long as it kept far from her hair.

Re: Make Banners [9/27]

[identity profile] perilless.livejournal.com 2011-09-27 03:38 pm (UTC)(link)
There was an awful lot of glitter. Perhaps growing up with a literal bottomless pit of wealth dulled Rosella's attraction to bling, but even if she wanted to, she couldn't bring herself to utilize the glitter as much as it seemed she should.

Discretion had its own appeal, right? Either way, Rosella was determined to help with a few banners and make them nice and classic and, well, simple.

Anything that happened to it after it left her hands was beyond her.

Angelica didn't know if she had any visitors coming, but still, making the banners was fun. Messy, but fun.

Despite her StuCo posters, Annie was not quite glittered out yet. In fact, she was probably overdoing it on the glitter letters. It was Fandom, Annie, not Vegas.

Quinn was doing a loopy glue-and-glitter border thing for one poster -- or trying to. She hadn't noticed yet that she'd bumped against it and her skirt was roughly half glittered.

Morrigan was...not quite sure what to make of the glitter. It seemed to be getting everywhere, even on her staff, and she was rather sure she had not actually touched the stuff.

She was starting to suspect it was some sort of mischief-spirit.
