Dorm Lobby | Wednesday During and After Classes

There was excitement in the air. Okay, maybe that was just the mixture of Caroline's perfume and fresh baked cookies or just the scent of fresh permanent marker emanating from the sign adorning her table in the lobby.

Her purpose was the same as the words on the poster that had been glitter-fied at the KDG meeting:

Sign up to perform in the Student Council Parent Weekend Recital!
When: SATURDAY EVENING
Where: The COMMUNITY CENTER

With a great big smile, Caroline was ready to do her Student Council duty and chat up anyone who looked in need of some persuasion to participate. Um, not that she was going to be using her special, vampiric talents to fill the sign up list. That would be bad, even if it would mean a seriously amazing show.

Hmm. Maybe she should just stick with the cookie bribe.

"Come on, I'm sure you have some hidden talent," Caroline tried. "Like...do you have an awesome voice for reading aloud? Back in the day, people totally read poetry at stuff like this."

"Sorry," Mercy said without a hint of sadness. "Just have the one voice. I'm good with cars, but that's pretty much it."

"Seriously, you and Jake are hopeless," Caroline decided with a sigh. "I'm so labeling it an animal thing and insisting that you still come watch the other performances since you already took a cookie. Ooh, are you having any guests? It might be a good way to entertain them!"

Mercy rolled her eyes. "I can come if it means that much. And yeah. My mom is coming. Even though I really don't want to see her right now."

Fortunately, her mom wasn't going to be able to make it. Unfortunately, the person coming was someone she wanted to see even less."

"Ugh, mothers. I didn't bother inviting mine. Like she'd take a weekend off for this." She would, Caroline just didn't give her the chance. "Are you going to stuff her in a hotel room and just visit her the least possible amount?"

"Stuff Margi in a hotel room?" She shook her head. "She's going to march all over campus and town and make sure she knows everything about everyone I know and everything I do. She's kind of a force of nature."

"Oooh...think she'll sniff me out, too?" Because Caroline was kind of used to the don't tell anyone what you are line, not that she was very good at it.

"If you mean, will she find out we're friends, yeah. If you mean, will she find out you're a vampire... Not unless you tell her. She's... not like me." Mercy sighed. "That's why she gave me up when I was a baby and I started shifting in my crib."

"Yeah, that still blows. Uh, is she all anti that...stuff?" Caroline wondered. "Or is Fandom going to be kind of a horrible shock?"

She shook her head. "No, not really. Or at least not all of it. She knows about witches and the fae and that kind of thing. But she's really protective of me."

"Aww, that's sweet! She sounds kind of badass, but that seems to follow with having a daughter who'd run out and get shot in the ass," Caroline teased.

Mercy blushed and laughed. "Do not tell her that! I'll never hear the end of it!"

"Ha! Yeah, you so shouldn't have said that." Not to Caroline of all people with such a gaping trap of a mouth. "But hey, at least you healed, right? It'd be way worse if you like, had a bum ass cheek now."

"No kidding." Mercy shook her head. "If I was limping and couldn't sit down, it would be a bit of an giveaway."
