Pride Meeting, First Floor Rec Room, Wednesday After Classes

There were snacks and soda, and as a, "Yay, we all survived vacation!" treat, Petra had even sprung for doughnuts from the bakery. "Hey, guys!" she said. "I hope everyone had a good vacation, or at least not a scary vacation. My roommate turned into a dragon." After a moment she thought to add, "But a tiny dragon. Oh, but she's better now. Anyway, Homecoming's coming up, is everyone excited? And then there's Halloween. Sooooo," Petra indicated the pile of cosmetics on the table before her. "I brought makeup! And nail polish! If anyone wants to go get their stash, too, great, and then we can do makeovers or test out our looks for the dance. And guys, get over your 'boys don't wear makeup' hangups, because you should totally at least embrace concealer, trust me on this one, and guyliner can be so hot. But," she sighed, "if someone really doesn't want to, you don't have to. You can talk about vacation instead! But if you're just hesitating because 'I don't wear makeup' or 'guys don't wear makeup' or you're scared, don't be. It's totally not scary. It's fun! And then I was thinking next week we could have a costume workshop for Halloween, so you guys might want to think ahead to that and plan on bringing whatever costume stuff you've got. Halloween's so great, because you can be whoever you want to be. Don't you think? Anyway, yes. Makeup!" She was so excited.

If you're really picky she has black nail polish, just stick to that and you'll be fine.

Alternately, talk about vacation.

Tara was pretty happy with the makeup she was wearing -- nothing huge, just mascara and lip gloss -- but it had been a while since she painted her nails. She found a vial of pale blue nail polish with sparkles and propped her hand against a table to delicately fill in her nails.

Seifer dug around for the dark polishes, and chose a blue.

What? It matched the shirt he was wearing today.

An excuse to paint her nails? Hanna was so okay with that. She decided to experiment a bit and went for a glitter gradient (http://willworkformakeup.blogspot.com/2010/11/glittery-gradient-nails.html) look.

Kenzi was having entirely too much fun. A different color of nail polish on each finger, and working on drawing tribal patterns on her face and fingers with eyeliner pencil.

Makeup had been one of Raven's favorite things about Fandom. Well, eyeliner for sure. She needed it like breathing.

The whole makeup thing was... pretty foreign to Mercy. You know, besides some lip gloss for special occasions.

Billy had never really worn makeup - he got beaten up enough without it, thank you - but everyone else seemed to be digging in, so he was experimenting with one of the darker nail polishes, seeing how it went on and trying not to get it all over his fingers.

"If you do a Jackson Pollock around your nails you can dip a Q-tip in remover and try to get it off," Petra suggested. "Or wait until it's dry and pick it off, which is supposed to be really bad for your cuticles but it's what I wind up doing half the time anyway. Don't tell anyone," she finished, smiling wryly.

"Do you get better at this with practice? Or is it always a mess until you break out the Q-tips?" Billy asked. "I don't know how girls wear stuff like this all the time."

"You get better at it," Petra assured him. "It's just a matter of practice and patience. And learning how to steady your hands."

"And be ambidextrous?" Billy said, switching hands to try to paint his right nails with his left hand. "I didn't even consider going for the eyeliner. I like having the power of sight."

"Practice!" Petra sing-songed. "And a mirror that magnifies your eye to the size of Jupiter, for the eyeliner."

"Awww, that's cheating!" Billy said, laughing and slooowly putting polish on most of the parts of his nail. "It seems like you're really into this stuff..." He trailed off, not sure how to ask if Petra had always been that way without being offensive.

"Um, duh," Petra said. "Makeup is like magic."

"Magic is magic." Not that Billy was biased there or anything. "Makeup is messy and expensive and lots of times makes people look really bad because they picked the wrong colors or put it on wrong or something."

"Wow, okay, Mr. Negative. Makeup is fun and transformation and color and sex and drama. It can make you look more like yourself or like someone else entirely. People who pick the wrong colors or put it on wrong just don't know what they're doing yet. That's not necessarily their fault, and you shouldn't be judgey about it. And it doesn't have to be expensive. There's totally decent stuff at the drugstore, and thank goodness or I wouldn't have half of what I do."

"As long as you don't think you have to wear it to be pretty," Billy started, realizing he had come off sounding kind of judgey. "I guess I'd just rather transform myself through clothes. Although you were right, guyliner can be pretty hot when the guys know what they're doing."

"Costume workshop okay with everyone? Or does anyone have better ideas? I'd love to hear them!"

"I'm good with it," Tara said, raising her voice a little. "But, uh, can we ask people not to dress as scary witches or sexy witches? It's really not empowering. Also a cliche."

Look, everyone has their causes.

"Nice witches are fine," she added, as an afterthought.

"Besides, the whole wart thing isn't flattering," Hanna said, nodding at Tara. She was actually showing sincere support for that cause...in her own Hanna way.

"Plus, there's that girl who's green," Petra pointed out. "She might think you were making fun of her or something, if you went that route."

"Another good point," Tara said. "Elphaba doesn't need extra stress."

Mercy hadn't ever really done the Halloween thing. Not the dressing up and all. Werewolves were pretty scary on their own. But if this was what people wanted then she was fine with it.

Though she had no idea what she might be. If anything.

"I guess it's fine," she said. "Though I'm not really sure about it all."

"Why not?" Petra asked. "Is something wrong with it?"

"No," Mercy said slowly. "I just never - we usually just stayed home and ate candy and watched scary movies." And laughed at them. None of them were nearly as scary as real werewolves.

"So, I don't really, I mean it's all just stuff I've read about or seen on TV."

"Oh," Petra said, "well, then it's time you had a proper Halloween. With costumes!"

Mercy laughed. "I wouldn't even know where to start!"

"You can start anywhere! You could be a princess, or a vampire, or a cat. Whatever you want!"

She laughed. Vampire was right out and she couldn't quite see herself as a cat, what with the whole coyote thing, and she was as far from a princess as she could imagine. Still she truly appreciated the support and help.

"Maybe something that won't make me stand out? Something, you know, plain? Maybe..." she tried to think of something that might work. "A... librarian? Or a mechanic? Or something?"

"I don't think you get the whole 'Halloween' thing," Petra suggested as gently as she could, because, wow.

Mercy really really didn't. Except for the whole watching scary movies thing.

She blushed. "Yeah, I guess I'm pretty hopeless about a bunch of things."

"It's just--it's Halloween! You can be anything you want to be, real or imaginary, for one night only. Do you really want to waste that kind of opportunity on trying not to be noticed?"

"I... get into a lot less trouble if I work on not being noticed," Mercy admitted. "Especially when I was living at my mom's. But, I guess maybe here I don't really have to."

She didn't sound all that certain.

...yeah Mercy was really not helping Petra's impression of her as an abuse victim to clear up. "Yeah, you totally don't have to hide here. Hello, that's the whole point of this club!"

Abuse victim, coyote in a werewolf pack that lots of the pack would have been happy to see dead... Still, she'd been a lot less uncertain before she'd had her world pulled out from under her earlier in the year. Not to worry, the old Mercy was showing signs of returning.

Mercy looked up at her with a surprised expression on her face. "I hadn't thought about the club that way. I guess - it was kind of a way to get out and be around people and support others who could be or were discriminated against because of their sexuality."

As opposed to their coyote status.

"It...can't be both?"

"You'd know better than me," Mercy pointed out, "But yeah, I guess it could. I just hadn't thought about it that way."

She's here to listen. And waiting for her nails, which she painted a shade of burnt orange, to dry.

He's...still Deadpool.

And therefore amazing.

But that didn't mean he was going to get his nails done. Maybe. Jan was too young for this crap, so he was safe.
