Sixth Floor Common Room, Thursday Evening

It was Petra's birthday, and she was throwing her own party, thank you very much, because she deserved a party, and also cake. There were streamers and balloons, a cake she'd picked up at J,GoB (She didn't realize it yet, but the inside looked like this. It would be a delightful surprise) and ice cream, along with chips and dips and plenty of other ~~moddable~~ snacks and drinks. There was a ~~handwavey~~ party playlist pumping from Petra's iPod's speaker dock, and there was a ball pit. What more could any party want? Petra was pretty sure the answer was nothing. Come on, ball pit.

The birthday girl was wearing a green velvet party dress and her sparkly gold boots. She had on black leggings under the dress, though, because she was totally getting in that ball pit and didn't want to flash anyone. Especially, you know, considering, but mostly just in general.

"ANNIE!"

Hope you didn't need those eardrums. Here comes Rilla.

"RILLA!" Annie shrieked just as loudly, throwing her arms out for a hug. "You're back!"

"I'm back!" Rilla said. "Did you get my letter?"

"I did! What was that about starving Belgians?" she asked.

"The Germans are being just horrible to them," Rilla said plaintively. "I'm thinking of starting a fundraiser."

"Ooh! I'll help," Annie decided immediately. Of course she would. "So how was home after the letter?"

Rilla frowned a bit. "I got into a fight with Irene Howard. She said the most horrible things about Walter after giving Jims a cold and I told her never to speak to me again."

The first words out of Annie's mouth should probably not have been "That bitch," but she gave a baby a cold, okay?

"She kissed him all over his face," Rilla said, "and then bounced him and the ungrateful little thing actually smiled at her for it. But then, of course, she got bored with him and put him down, which didn't suit him at all and he fussed for the entire quilting session."

"You have quilting sessions?" That was the important part, obviously.

Rilla nodded. "It's where all of the good gossip comes out."

"And to think, we just have radio." Quilting just sounded more like a gossippy girly bonding thing.

"A quilting is even better than a funeral for airing all of the village scandals of five generations," Rilla said, eyes twinkling.

"And 'scandals' sounds way better."

Stop being jealous of wartime, Annie. Your skirts are too short, you'd never survive there.

Rilla laughed. "Oh, it's just small town things like who married badly, who's walking out with whom, and who has joined up to go to war."

"'Walking out?' Ooh, I like that." And now she'd be using it. Sorry, radio listeners.

"You can walk out for years--some people have pushed it for decades--before becoming engaged," Rilla explained.

"Iiiiii do not have that kind of patience." Let no one be surprised by this.

Rilla laughed. "Neither do most of the gossips in the village," she said. "There's normally some kind of tragic tale behind why it's taking so long. Mother knew a man who'd been calling on a woman for twenty years, but he'd promised his mother he wouldn't get engaged while she was alive. And then lingered for decades. I would have kicked him."

"I know this was before the invention of He's Just Not That Into You but I'd have moved on waaaay sooner than twenty years," Annie decided.

Unless maybe it was Troy.

"Me too," Rilla declared vehemently. "Besides, I don't want a man who's that influenced by what his mother wants. Have a little more spirit than that."

"Ugh, mama's boys," Annie said, like she had personal experience that she really, really did not. But she'd seen TV.

Going to dances with William and thinking Kenneth Ford was sooooo handsome hardly qualified Rilla either.

"Is that what they call them now?"

"Uh huh. They don't like it when you call them that, though. I think." Again with the lack of experience.

"Perhaps we should stick to dating orphans," Rilla mused, "just to be certain."
