The Salle, Sunday Midday

Evidently there was only so far that Anakin's curiosity about the island could go to distract him from the problems at home and his distance from them; finding out that both his sister and his best friend had been here and then gone had a little something to do with that, but mainly it was that he was here and restless and away from it all.

He was still in the habit of practicing with his remote every day. He didn't spend all of those practice sessions fighting imaginary opponents in heroic fantasies any more the way he used to (and the way Jacen always got on his case about) now that he had some actual combat experience, but every now and then he'd indulge in it, and then tell himself he was coming up with hypothetical battle scenarios.

There was less of that in today's session, though; mainly it was just Anakin and the hum of his lightsaber blade and the soft zap noises of the remote, lost in the flow of the movement. There was also an edge of frustration in his Force presence, and he wasn't above being glad Jacen wasn't around to call him on that.

Ben normally hit the salle earlier in the day, but today he'd been a little distracted by donuts at JGOB other matters.

The familiar sounds of a lighsaber and remote caught his attention as he drew closer and he smiled despite himself. He opened the door and leaned in the doorway, silently appraising his cousin's skills.

Anakin had spent a lot of time practicing with remotes, and his parries managed to be precise but almost careless at the same time. Even if he sensed Ben's presence he didn't let up until the programmed sequence had run its course and the remote deactivated.

He thumbed off his lightsaber and wiped sweat out of his eyes as he turned toward the door.

"Hi, Ben."

"Not bad," Ben replied, eyes twinkling. "It's almost like you do that a lot or something."

Anakin looked wary for a moment, as if he expected to hear something about spending too much time practicing with a remote.

"I have to stay sharp, don't I?"

Ben held up his hands in a placating gesture. "There's a war on," he said. "Of course you do."

With their galaxy, there was always a war on.

Anakin backed down and reattached the lightsaber hilt to his belt.

"Sorry. I'm used to hearing that as a hint I should do less of it."

"That's dumb," was Ben's very well-thought out assessment. "Yuuzhan Vong don't use lightsabers, so it's not like sparring against another person's going to help much there, either."

"Besides which, we can't sense them in the Force anyway," Anakin agreed, grateful for the backup on that point. "I'm thinking of building some kind of training droid to work with instead. Remotes are fine, but they're not specific enough."

Ben nodded. "Working around the thing where they can't be detected in the Force is going to be a pain, huh."

"You know it," Anakin agreed, frowning. "There have to be ways; I just haven't figured them out yet."

Ben smiled. "You will."

"Thanks for the vote of confidence." Anakin tilted his head thoughtfully. "Unless it's not that, exactly."

"It's a vote of confidence," Ben assured him. "You'll be astral."

It was hard not to turn into a fanboy.

Kate hadn't had the luck of hitting the Salle at the right time to see anything quite like that. Which was impressive, really, considering the numbers of people with lightsabers and all the tech that went with them around here.

Having a big (and occasionally glowing) sword just didn't seem as unique, she considered as she ran her thumb along her own blade. "Don't you feel inadequate now." Yes, she was talking to her sword. What?

With the number of Jedi who'd been through Fandom by now, you could almost argue that lightsabers were about a dime a dozen.

"Are you --" Anakin deactivated his blade so he wouldn't have to yell over the hum. "-- talking to your sword?"

"It doesn't talk back." It also didn't listen, actually, which still didn't stop Kate. "I like that about it."

And she was in fact, mostly sane, shockingly enough.

"You've never done that?" Didn't everyone at some point?

Anakin glanced down at his lightsaber hilt and grinned crookedly. "Only when I was building it. But sure, I've talked to other things before, I guess."

See! She wasn't completely nuts. Or at least, was as much so as anyone else.

"What are the chances if I tell it all about the pretty glowing of other weapons, it'll up its game?" Slim to none, was the answer. She was mostly kidding.

"I could answer that," Anakin said after a moment, "but I'm starting to wonder if any answer I could give will account for whatever variables Fandom can come up with."

"Your first week been enough to blow your mind already?" Her world was pretty damned weird, and even she'd boggled at things her first few months in this place.

Even still. Not that she'd admit it.

"Not quite," Anakin tried to insist, even though it had on several levels. "I just keep hearing things, on the radio and all, and I have to keep adjusting my expectations."

Never for the more reasonable.

Kate snickered, wandering in. "People can adapt to a lot." When they had to. "You're not curled up in a ball rocking, so I figured you probably weren't too broke."

"So what is that, anyway?" Girl liked swords, she couldn't help her curiosity.

"It takes a lot to get me to do that," Anakin said stoutly. "We haven't gotten anywhere near that point."

Still, he turned the hilt of his lightsaber over in his hands. "What, this?"

Kate smirked a little at the vehemence, but nodded.

"The only one I've seen is of that teacher of ours," she said, nodding. "And we were fleeing for our lives then, so I thought probably not the time to quiz him on it."

Anakin however was here and there were no enormous dragons in sight. So.

"It tends to be an inconvenient time for questions then," Anakin agreed.

"It's a Jedi weapon," he explained as he briefly thumbed the blade on, flicking his wrist just enough to make it hum. "Building it's a key stage of our training, and means each of us is particularly attuned to our own lightsaber."
