First Floor Lobby, Friday Evening

At the end of the evening, there was a list posted in the lobby for all the people who had (willingly or otherwise) managed to be placed in the drawing for a secret Valentine.

There were even truffles nearby to give even more incentive to check it out. Or as a bribe in case it didn't go as planned for those on the list. One of those two.

Elphaba just happened to be wandering through through the lobby that evening when she stopped and stared at the list.

"...why is my name on there?" she said, having not signed up for any such thing, to her knowledge.

Surreal was passing by right as Elphaba spoke, so of course she stopped and looked.

And blinked. Twice.

"What does that mean?" she asked, grabbing for the other girl's elbow to get her attention as she pointed at the poster. "I don't know those words."

"It's the list of names paired up for the secret valentine," Elphaba explained. "I'm paired with Annie Edison. I think... either somethings gone wrong, or someone signed me up."

"I can see that," Surreal replied, "-but what is a valentine? Or a Lock-e?"

"It's a holiday they celebrate here," Elphaba explained. "A romantic one. I believe in this way, it means someone we are expected to accompany to the dance tomorrow."

"As for Loki, I believe he's a fellow student."

"Low-key," Surreal repeated to herself, nodding slightly. "I know the name, I did not know that is how it was spelled."

"Why did they pair us up for a romantic holiday? I'm not interested in anyone warming my bed." Classy, Surreal, very classy.

"I don't know," Elphaba said. "I'm guessing either someone decided to sign us up, or there's been an error."

She had yet to discover Karla's meddling.

"I don't think they're supposed to be anything that intimate, in any way."

"So..." Karla said, giving Elphaba an unsure but game grin. "I miiiiiiiight owe you an explanation."

And possibly an apology. As you do.

Elphaba paused for a moment, then simply raised an eyebrow at her friend.

"Am I going to like this explanation?"

"Maaaaaaaaybe?"

Lookit this grin, Elphie. Just look at it. Can you really stay mad at it?

She probably wouldn't.

"Well then, I guess I'll have to be the judge," Elphaba said. "So you can start explaining."

The eyebrow remained raised.

"The important thing to focus on is how I just signed you up as looking for friends," Karla assured her quickly. "Left to your own devices, you probably would have skipped the dance to watch a stupid show of the teevee, hate it, and eat a salad."

Elphaba stood for a moment, letting herself think on that for a moment.

"I would have read a book," she retorted.

"Well, now you get to get all dressed up and look beautiful and maybe make a new friend," Karla said, hands on her hips. "Maybe even dance a little and have a great time. Annie's a sweet female--" when cushion forts weren't on the line "--so odds are, you're going to have fun."

So there, Elphie. So there. You were going to socialize and like it.

"So now is where I'm supposed to act grateful that you think you know what's best for me?" Elphaba said. "It seems you share at least one quality with my father."

She sighed a bit. "Fine. And to think you thought that song about trying to make me popular wasn't really in your plans."

"Perhaps we do," Karla said evenly, looking into Elphaba's eyes. "But the difference is, my motivations come from being proud of exactly who you are."

Nyaaaaaaaaah.

Elphaba normally would have fought the smile that came at those words, but this particular day she actually felt her face get somewhat warm and she looked away.

"...then I suppose I should say thank you," she said.

Karla couldn't help but notice that Elphaba looked absolutely scrumptious when she smiled like that. "Don't strain something doing so," she teased, reaching out to poke Elphaba's nose.

There was a feeling, so sudden and even a bit new at the touch against her nose. Elphaba's face seemed even hotter and her smile was positively irrepressible.

"Thank you," she said, finally looking up at Karla. "Though if this goes horribly, you will owe me a great deal."

"Name your price," Karla said. "If your dance goes horribly, you can choose your own forfeit and I'll pay it."

There was probably no cause for the wink that accompanied that statement. And yet...

Elphaba was oddly flustered, and that wink had been of no help with that at all.

"I'll have to name it later," she said, shaking her head. She took a moment to squeeze her eyes shut, to try and stop her mind from wandering in places that were of no use to anyone. "But don't think for a minute you're getting away with this lightly."

"Of course not!" Karla protested, wide-eyed and innocent. "You can be as firm as you need with me later on."

...They were still talking about Karla signing Elphie up for the dance, right? Karla was losing track.

"Firm, yes," Elphaba said. "If it comes to that. I don't... we'll see."

She swallowed hard, wondering why in the name of Lurline's frilly fairy underthings it was so damned warm in the lobby.

"I think I should... I should probably go now. Figure out what I'm wearing to this dance."

And perhaps take a cold, cold shower.

"Let me know if you need some help getting dressed," Karla said, pretending she totally hadn't stumbled over the 'un--' that had someone tried to sneak in there. "I'm an old hand at this. I know all about, umm, dances and stuff."

...Yeah.

"I will," Elphaba said, turning to hurry off. "I... yes."

And with that, she was going, trying to regain some sense of balance in her head.

Tara blinked a lot at the name next to hers. Dorothy seemed like a sweet kid, but ... she wasn't even sure they had lesbians back where she was from. None who admitted it, anyhow.

Oh well, at least there were chocolates.

"Well I suppose making better friends is just as good as making new ones," Dorothy said cheerfully, stepping up beside Tara.

Toto, for his part, merely padded up in front of them both and barked once, trying to get someone's attention.

"I guess," Tara said uncertainly, but gave Dorothy a smile. "So ... should we go to the dance together?"

Probably just as friends ~~and on hellacious SP from this end~~, but that was fine.

As she spoke, she bent down to offer Toto her hand.

"I think that's a lovely idea," Dorothy said, returning the smile. "I'd been planning to go just by myself, but having a friend to accompany me will make it all the more fun, I think."

"I haven't gone to a dance with anybody in practically a year," Tara told her. "See, if I'm going with you I won't just hide in my room and eat oreos instead. Perfect plan."

"I haven't gone to a dance at a school at all," Dorothy said. "Though I might have to ask you at some time what exactly an oreo is. But now I actually do need to get myself a dress for tomorrow. I hadn't even thought it quite possible when the sorority visited the dress shop yesterday."

"Oreos are really yummy chocolate cookies." Now Tara knew what Dorothy was getting by way of a Valentine's Day treat. "And ... is it horrible if I hadn't even thought about my dress yet? I was just going to wear something I already had."

"Oh, I don't think so," Dorothy said. "I was just hoping to get a dress that looked a little more modern. But not too modern."

It would be extremely modest, please and thank you.

Alex was only here for the chocolate.

Or at least, he was until he saw the list. And more specifically, his name on the list. "What?" he squawked. "But--but I didn't sign up for this!"

He figured it would probably be an asshole move to bail, though...

It was a lobby after all...

It's windy and snowing. I don't like this.

IT NEEDS TO DIE.
