Gabrielle really appreciated having down time that wasn't of the 'making camp for the night before hitting the road on another incredibly dangerous adventure' variety. She also appreciated modern amenities like food delivery and television, so why not combine all three?

This was the sort of brilliant idea that led to things like containers from Taste of Thai covering half a table in the common room while Gabrielle sat on the couch idly flipping through channels -- and skipping past anything on the History Channel that had to do with Rome, thanks.

"Don't have all your plans set yet?" Annie wondered. Since that was really the only reason she was iffy on graduating.

"My plans consist of 'go home, meet up with my best friend, and get back to traveling with her,'" Gabrielle explained. "I never know what's going to happen to us when we're out on the road, so it's a little hard to make plans more concrete than wanting to drop in and see a friend if we happen to be passing through that area, or making sure to find a blacksmith for the horses' shoes as soon as we can."

Making concrete longterm plans would be giving the writers too much credit for continuity. The itinerant lifestyle was unpredictable that way.

"How about you, Annie? Know what you're doing after graduation?"

Several possibilities popped into Annie's head: Food service. Living in a van down by the river. Getting pregnant and going on welfare since that's all she'd be good for anyway. Tracking down whoever was in charge of giving out scholarships and doing something unseemly and humiliating in order to get one.

"It's a little up in the air right now," she said after a pause.

". . . is that a good thing or a bad thing?" Gabrielle had to wonder. Some people liked their spontaneity more than others.

"It's... not what I planned, but sometimes that's a good thing. Every cloud, silver lining. And things like that," she tried.

Gabrielle smiled vaguely and leaned forward with her elbows on her knees, chin resting on her clasped hands.

"It sounds like one of those things people just tell you to make you feel better about things, doesn't it? But I think it's true. Things never really seem to go according to plan for me, but I get the most amazing surprises out of how they turn out, and looking back, most of the time, I don't think I'd want to change how everything unfolded."
