Dorm Lobby, Tuesday, 3/27

Quinn was at a table in the dorm lobby today. The table had been decorated with a patterned red tablecloth and red and gold ballons that she hoped might remind somebody who squinted of the planet Mars. She was wearing a small pink FABRAY FOR PROM QUEEN button on her sweater, and figured that was about as much campaigning as she needed to do.

She had a couple celebrity magazines to flip through, but mostly she was there to sell tickets and scope out any good gossip from people who bought them.

"I think I can take a few minutes away from the teeming hordes," Quinn said, what with the mostly-empty lobby and everything. "Let me get your tickets first, though."

She went to retrieve a pair of prom tickets, glancing up as she slid them into an envelope. "Who are you bringing?" she asked, with honest curiosity.

"I could create a distraction if it would buy you a few more minutes," Bruce joked, taking a quick look around. It wouldn't have to be much of a distraction, of course. "Anyway, I'm bringing Kate Daniels." He'd be lying if he claimed he wasn't curious to see what kind of reaction that would get. Probably a better one than if he said Rebecca's name.

Quinn smiled, which would not have happened for Rebecca. "I like her," she volunteered. "She seems ... kind of straightforward? Which is not a bad thing."

Kate fell into the same mental category as Claudia: They weren't competing, so Quinn could judge the other girl on her merits.

"I might borrow you for a dance anyhow."

"I'm glad you approve," Bruce admitted. What's that? Bruce Wayne showing some emotional honesty? Gasp. "And I'm sure she won't mind if I wander off for a song. Maybe two, depending on voting."

"Perfect. And don't tell anybody?" Quinn confided, "But I will actually live if somebody else takes that second dance. Get into Yale and prom queen seems a tiny bit less important."

Not that she was taking off her button.

"Yeah, I've never taken any of that stuff too seriously. Still, it would be nice," Bruce said. "But the more important thing... You got into Yale? Congratulations."

"I didn't tell you?" Quinn asked. "Yeah, they sent out my letter over a month ago. I have a theory somebody on their admissions board knows how weird this place is and gave me extra points. So now all I have to do is go to New Haven and stay at the top of my class."

Easy, really.

"Have you heard yet?"

"I'm sure you can pull that off," Bruce said. "I got my letter from Gotham State last week. It wasn't too surprising since my family built half the campus, but it's still nice to make it official."

Not that he wouldn't have foot ten in without his name, but it certainly didn't hurt.

"Congratulations anyhow," Quinn told him. "Decided to stay close to home, huh?"

She liked that Yale was almost a thousand miles from Ohio; it made it harder for her mom to just drop in. Though that probably wasn't an issue for Bruce.

Because his parents were deeeeaaaaaaaaad.

"Honestly?" Bruce said. This wasn't something that he generally shared with people, so he allowed himself a small dramatic pause. "I haven't actually set foot in Gotham City in a few years. So this is more getting reacclimated to home."

"Really?" Quinn blinked at him; that had been a good use of the dramatic pause. "I didn't know that. Any reason you stayed away?"

"I figured I could focus on my studies better if I wasn't there," Bruce said. And that was true, if slightly vague about what his studies were. "I'm a teenaged billionaire whose parents famously died. The press alone would end up being a huge distraction."

Also, there weren't too many great martial arts teachers there.

"So you get, like, paparazzi?" Quinn blinked slowly. "I guess I can see the downside of that..."

Not exactly.

"That's a lot of it. And I think I'm better prepared for it now than I would have been when I was fifteen," Bruce said. A smile crossed his face. "And now I think I could even enjoy it. I definitely couldn't say that a few years ago."

Oh, Gotham press corps. He was prepared to play you like a fiddle.

Quinn watched that smile. "Got big plans for it?" she asked. "I'd kind of like to see your press."

"I wouldn't say 'plans,'" Bruce said. 'Plots' and 'establishing a solid cover' were more specific. "But I fully expect to be on the society page a lot. And I'll be sure to pass along anything either very flattering or ridiculously bad."

"If, hypothetically, you needed a platonic date for some charity something, you might know somebody who would be willing to portal in," Quinn suggested. "Just ... putting that out there."

"Well, I do have plans to step up the number of events the Wayne Foundation does pretty significantly," Bruce said. "I'm sure I'll be able to make room for a good friend for at least one of those."
