The Dorm Stairwell, Tuesday evening

After class today, Rapunzel had decided to explore the stairwells. After all, it sounded like there must be something really fun in them somewhere if it was fortunate to get dragged into one.

She'd been in the stairwell before, of course, so it wasn't exactly new, but she hadn't noticed anything in there before that would make her feel particularly fortunate. Which just meant she had to have missed it! So a more thorough search was in order.

And if anyone ran across her craning her neck around and staring in dark corners, or trying to see what that was under the stairs, well, they could totally help!

Terry was just coming back from some completely normal, everyday activities in a hidden cave in town (well... normal for him) and making his way back to the third floor when he spotted Rapunzel.

"Hey," he said as he noticed the dark-corner-staring. "Looking for anything in particular?"

"Something awesome," Rapunzel answered a bit absently. Because that was really helpful.

"Hopefully it's not a turtle eating a pizza. Because that happened last week, and I doubt we'll ever see the likes of that again," Terry joked. "But seriously, what's so interesting?"

"I don't know," Rapunzel admitted, a tiny bit of frustration creeping into her voice. "There was this thing in class today that made me sure that there would be..."

Wait. Rapunzel finally turned around, and a huge smile appeared on her face. "Terry!" Yay for catching on.

"Should I be concerned about that sudden change in tone?" Terry asked.

That barely beat out 'Wait, which class?' as the most obvious question to ask.

Rapunzel giggled. "Noooo." She shook her head. "I was just distracted." A slight blush stained her cheeks.

"And while you're awesome, I kind of don't think that you were what I was looking for."

Unless... maybe Miss Dojima and Mister Romeo had known he would show up here?

"That depends. Were you looking for someone who's kind of confused?" Terry asked. "Because right now I pretty much have that and a jacket that really wasn't meant for warmer months."

"I really doubt you were looking for the jacket."

Another giggle. "Noooo. And to be honest, I don't know exactly what I'm looking for. But it was pretty clear that there were very fun things in stairwells, and I got the feeling that you were supposed to know about them. So I thought I'd try to see if I could figure it out!"

No luck so far.

"Yeah, in my experience, the most you usually get from stairwells are stairs and the occasional fist fight," Terry said.

Rapunzel frowned. "So you don't know why it would be a good thing if someone dragged you into a stairwell either, then?"

Darn. That would have made things a lot easier.

That got Terry thinking back to the earlier obvious question. "Wait. What class was this for?"

"It's called 'Is Love a Tender Thing?'." Rapunzel paused. "Which is sort of an odd title for a class, I think. But it's been interesting so far."

"...Oh, yeah, they were talking about something way different than a fist fight," Terry said. "This isn't a homework assignment or anything, is it?"

He kind of wanted to get the lay of the land before explaining anything.

Rapunzel grinned and rolled her eyes. "Well, of course it's different. Fist fights don't sound like a good thing at all."

Then she shook her head. "No. I was just curious." A tiny frown creased her forehead. "But I thought it would be a lot easier to find."

"Well, you might not be as likely to find that here since we have dorm rooms for privacy," Terry said. "But they were probably talking about dragging someone into the stairwell to make out with them in a slightly less public place than a common room or the hallway."

He was assuming they weren't talking about anything more than making out.

"Make out...?"

Oh.

"Oh!"

Rapunzel's eyes flared wide and she flushed slightly. "Then I guess that looking around in the stairwell all by myself isn't going to be very enlightening, is it?"

"And if you did find people doing that, it would just be awkward for everyone," Terry joked.

That earned Terry a delighted giggle. "I suppose that if they came in here for privacy, me showing up would kind of defeat the purpose, huh?"

"Yeah, but like I said, if they really wanted privacy they have dorm rooms," Terry said. "Assuming their roommate is okay with it."

Yeah, Terry just had the horrific thought of trying to bring a girl to his room with Bucky there.

"That's true. Though I suppose I could also just walk into my room and do the same thing sometime."

Well, theoretically, at least.

"Probably not alone, though," Terry mentioned.

It was funny because that was mentioned earlier. At least, it was funny to Terry.

Rapunzel giggled. "No," she grinned. "I mean I could walk into my room and find people trying to get some privacy."

But he was right. And that made her snicker again.

"Oh! Well, sure," Terry said. "So you and your roommate don't have some kind of warning system worked out?"

"A warning system?" Rapunzel asked, blinking in surprise. That sounded interesting!

"Yeah, a sock on the doorknob, something like that," Terry said. "Or if you're feeling really tech savvy, sending a text."

"To signal when you want... um... privacy?"

"Yeah," Terry said. "That way your roommate knows that there's something going on they might not want to interrupt."

"That's not something you can really do with a stairwell."

"Well, you probably could," Rapunzel pointed out. "But it'd take a lot of socks..."

Wait.

"Um... how soon do you think I should work out a signal with my roommate?"

"Well, that, ah, depends," Terry said carefully. "If there's been any close calls, the sooner the better."

"Well." Rapunzel pursed her lips thoughtfully. "None that I know of?" That meant it was okay, right?

"Then there's probably no big rush," Terry said. "But if it ever comes up as an issue, at least you're ready now."

"That's true!" Rapunzel nodded, and offered a grin.

"Thanks for the help. I could have spent all night in here."

"Hey, anything I can do to help," Terry said. "Within reason."

Rapunzel giggled. "And what would count as unreasonable," she teased.

"Asking to test out the sock on the doorknob thing might be a bit much" Terry offered. "But I'm happy to answer questions, things like that."

Rapunzel flushed just a bit, and shook her head. "I don't think I want to test that out with you."

Er. Wait.

"Um! Not that you aren't attractive! Not that I'm saying that you're, um..."

She was totally making a mess of this, wasn't she?

"Don't worry about it," Terry laughed. "Because you really don't want to try that with me. I just got out of a three year thing and I'm still getting over that."

See how nice he was? He was even giving a parachute.

"Oh." Rapunzel shifted from embarrassed to sympathetic in the blink of an eye. "I'm sorry. For... reminding you. And that it happened." Because that sounded painful.

Maybe she could... do... something? Though she had no idea what.

"Oh, no, I'm fine. Really. I'm just not going to be putting any socks on my doorknob in the near future, you know?" Terry said.

Okay, that was equal parts because of the breakup and his psychotic cat roommate. But still.

"I suppose that makes sense?" Rapunzel wasn't any sort of expert, truth be told. "I guess you have to, um... get some space? Is that... how it works?"

"Pretty much. Fortunately, I have plenty to keep my attention here so I don't dwell," Terry said.

"That's true." Rapunzel beamed. "There are so many things to do here!"

She shot him a grin. "You spend any time at the beach?"

"Not too much outside of my morning run. I'm sure that'll change as we get farther into summer, though," Terry said.

"It should! It's wonderful." Someone was a huge fan, and didn't even try to hide it.
