Salle | Thursday Morning

There always seemed to be an influx of people in his damn way for a few weeks after the new batch of students arrived so Jace was taking advantage of the calm before the storm by spending time in the salle. A glowing seraph blade was in his hand and he was currently using it to wail on a dummy. Wasn't much in the way of an opponent but it was better than hanging out in his room all day.

He'd save that for next week when there would be exploring newbies everywhere.

"So it really is a Shadowhunter thing," Natalie noted from the doorway, without preamble. She didn't need preambles. "Those blades."

"Have you been spying on other Shadowhunters lately?" Jace asked. "I don't think Alec would approve."

"I'm sure there are a lot of things Alec doesn't approve of," she replied, actually taking a few steps into the salle and casting an idle glance around like she hadn't just been here a few days ago. "But I wasn't spying on him."

"You were just doing the quiet assessing thing you do so well," Jace said with a smirk. He lifted up his seraph blade. "This one is named Gadriel."

"They have names?"

Well, Alec hadn't told her that. Of course, they'd gotten a little caught up on the topic of tradition.

"They won't work unless you invoke an angel's name before using it. Any angel will do," Jace explained. "The only name we don't use is Raziel. It's his blood that runs through our veins so it's sacred or something."

"Or something," Natalie agreed dryly as she came closer. "Makes sense." As much as anything involving angels did to her, anyway. "I remember seeing them in the other Fandom."

"I arrived at school quite well prepared, it's no surprise that the other Jace did the same thing," he said, twirling the blade with one hand. "I'm surprised you saw Alec with one. He's more at home at an archery range."

"Apparently he prefers throwing them," she noted, stopping a few feet away, hands in her pockets. "He got defensive when I pointed out the connection between that and archery."

It was impossible to tell from her tone whether she found that amusing or anything else.

"Some of our kind frown upon Alec's style of fighting," Jace told her. "Seem to think that just because he stays in the back protecting me and Izzy instead of running head first into danger like an idiot he's not all the Shadowhunter he could be."

Yes, he just called himself an idiot.

"You just called yourself an idiot."

That tone was amused.

"Nobody's perfect," Jace said with a smirk. "Though I come extremely close to it."

"Mmhmm." Well she wasn't going to bother arguing with that right now. "While being an impulsive idiot in battle. Guess that's something."

"That strategy hasn't failed me yet." Mostly due to Alec standing in the back and watching over him. "What are you doing down here anyway? Want to take up a new hobby?"

Natalie shrugged. "I'm just wandering." Or taking a breather from clinging to her soon to be departed boyfriend. "Besides, I've already arranged to take up a hobby, but it doesn't really involve the salle."

"And what hobby is that?" he asked.

"Clint offered to teach me archery."

So yes, she was actually going with ideas the other her had had in that other Fandom.

Jace gave an approving nod. "That seems like a good idea. Archery would suit you."

"And it's better than moping around the dorms too."

Natalie just barely suppressed the urge to roll her eyes. "Who's moping around the dorms?"

That'd be you, Nat, in probably a matter of days.

"Aren't you about to drop a lot of dead weight shortly?" Jace was maybe a tad bit excited. Jealousy issues, you know.

And here came Natalie's utterly unimpressed look, that frequent visitor.

"How tactful, Jace."

She'd been kidding when she'd told Peter he and Jace should form some kind of a club around doing this to her, but right now she was starting to feel like they just might be the kind of people to go through with it.

"Oh you'd see right through me if I used tact," Jace said. "I didn't want to insult your intelligence."

Natalie couldn't really argue with that, either. "Well, he's still my boyfriend," she said instead. "And will continue to be that."

She sounded more confident than she actually felt, there.

"Oh yeah, those things have a high chance of working out," Jace said, jabbing a dummy in the stomach with his blade. "Why don't you just break his heart now and get it over with? This is the perfect time to do it."

Natalie raised an eyebrow at the jabbing. Maybe other things too.

"Is it really just his heart that should be worried about?" she asked, perfectly mild.

"You'll get over it," Jace said, almost like it was a compliment of sorts. "Or you'll at least act like you are until it becomes true."

It's what he tended to do.

It was about how it went for her as well. Except for how she was still waiting for it to be true when it came to Todd leaving. But she was pretty sure she'd never get over that particular incident.

Childhood trauma and all that.

"Well, I'd rather not," she replied. "And it'd be nice if people could refrain from trying to shove me in that direction."

Jace rolled his eyes. "I'm not shoving."

"Calling my boyfriend a dead weight who I should dump is a little more than a friendly nudge, little brother," Natalie drawled. "Even if it is going around right now."

"Nice to know I'm not the only person with sense," he said with a smile. "It gets lonely on that side sometimes."

Now, Natalie did roll her eyes. "Well, I wouldn't feel overjoyed yet," she said, dryly, how else? "It's just one other person. Who thinks you're my actual brother, by the way."

Mostly because sometimes she was petty.

"Aww, so you really do care for me," Jace said sweetly. "I'm touched."

Eye roll. "He didn't know whether I had any siblings."

And after a year of knowing her and trusting her enough for confidential information and invites to Haiti on official business, she kind of expected Peter to have grasped a few basic things about her background and life and such. So, petty deception it was.

Not that that negated her actually caring for Jace, mind, because she did.

"We can actually pass for siblings, can't we?" Jace asked. "Even if we didn't look alike I still think we could have fooled people with our unimpressed stares."

Natalie shrugged a shoulder. "Most people don't look closely enough, anyway," she said. "And can't see that you're not half drawn. You're more smug and smirkier, but it probably still works."

"I have reasons to be smug and smirky," he said, knowing better than to question the half-drawn comment by now. "You do too, you just need to embrace the egotism."

"No, I don't," she replied, wrinkling her nose just a little bit, like there was something distasteful about the idea. "I know I'm good at various things I do, I just don't need to broadcast it to others."

"Oh suit yourself," Jace said playfully. "I have enough ego for the both of us."

"And probably several other people to boot," Natalie supplied. "I'll be sure to come to you if I ever feel the need to learn egotism."

Of course by then she was going to be Envy and finding out she'd been a natural all along.
