Yesterday had made little to no sense to Sia without actually looking it up (it sounded a lot like a holiday designed as an excuse to eat), and between then and today it seemed that everyone had moved on to this Christmas thing. Which Sia also knew nothing about. So when a slightly bored perusal of channels landed her on some sort of movie about the holidays, she thought it might be educational, even if she had no idea who Dean Cain was.

She'd found Lifetime holiday movies. For the love of god, someone stop her.

"Oh my god, what are you watching?" Jessica asked immediately after seeing the TV. It was in a tone that somebody might otherwise use if there was porn on the TV.

Sia waved a hand vaguely at the TV. "She lost her job, so her rival hired her as his nanny, and Christmas exists, apparently."

"And the spirit of Christmas is going to hook them up," Jessica said. "I assume. But it's definitely going to happen."

"So that's the purpose of Christmas," Sia said dryly.

"If you're judging by any made for TV movies, yes," Jessica said. "That's it exactly."

"And if I'm not judging my made for TV movies?" Sia hadn't known this was made for television but she instantly judged it now.

"For some people it's about family and togetherness. Other people, it's just some time off work or school. There's the giving and getting of presents. It's a big religious thing if you want it to be," Jessica said. "It's kind of all of that and then it boils down to the idea that it's the time of year where you're supposed to try your best to be a decent human being. Does that clear things up at all?"

"It does," Sia said thoughtfully. "And this movie got all of that wrong."

"Just be thankful you ended up here and not ABC Family. Their Christmas movies are like this, only sweet enough to give you diabetes," Jessica said.

"I think from now on I might skip the movies altogether," Sia decided.

Though she hadn't turned this one off. There really was nothing else on.

"It's impossible. If you're going to have the TV on at this time of year, you're going to see the movies. And the TV specials. And the everything," Jessica said. "But you're strong. You can survive it."

"I'm entirely capable or not turning on the television," Sia pointed out. "It's easily avoided."

"You say that now. But on December 25th you'll be watching A Yuletide Tale for twenty-four straight hours like the rest of us," Jessica said.

"I can guarantee that that will not be happening," Sia said slowly. "Without even knowing what that is."

"We'll see, my friend," Jessica said. "We'll see."

"So, if you're already curious about Christmas, I have to ask: did you get Thanksgiving all figured out?"

"Food," Sia replied. "With some requisite being thankful for things while preparing to stand in line and shop."

...Dispute that. Go ahead.

"Also 'family,' but that doesn't necessarily apply to the people who stuck around here," Jessica said. "So pretty much spot on. Good job!"

"In that case, television did make things simpler," Sia said. "Really, though, what is the obsession with buying things?"

"It started out with being a really nice gesture where people give gifts to people for Christmas," Jessica said. "And then it slowly mutated into a crazy day where people get trampled. But those people got trampled so that others could get something nice for a loved one at a lower price than usual. So there's that."

"It sounds like people really misunderstand what trying to be a good person means," she decided.

"It took a lot of time to turn into this. It's hard to blame people for it, especially when their kids are demanding whatever the big toy is this year," Jessica said. "But somewhere deep down, the holiday still means well."

"Under all the tramplings and spoiled children." Said the princess. "Maybe I'll understand it better when it's closer."

"Anything's possible. If you do, we'll call it another Christmas miracle," Jessica said.

"Another? Those are normal?" Don't mind the dubiousness in her voice there.

"Pretty much anything unlikely that ends happily around this time of year can be called a Christmas miracle," Jessica said. "With that in mind, yeah, pretty typical."

"This planet's a bit strange," Sia understated.

"And to think, you're on one of the less bizarre versions of it," Jessica pointed out.

And she had to ask: "How?"

"... Okay, I'm comparing to my world. Fandom itself is pretty wonky," Jessica said. "BUT we're still in a place where people find all of the weird stuff weird. My previous school was partially wrecked by supervillains three times in one school year. It got to a point where that was basically just another day off."

"That has to disrupt the entire school day," Sia said, only half joking while thinking of ways to fortify a building or something.

"It did the first couple times," Jessica said. "But once it happens enough, ooh, big deal."

"I'm honestly amazed that doesn't happen more often here." And she'd never even seen a real invasion yet!

"Who knows. Maybe that will be yet another Christmas miracle," Jessica said. "Not a good one. Just a miraculous one."

"If this happens at Christmas, I'm blaming you," Sia informed her.

"If it happens at Christmas, you'll thank me for reminding everyone that shallow commercialism isn't the point of the season," Jessica said. "Togetherness is. Togetherness in the form of punching some guy really hard in the face."

"Which probably also happens in connection with the shallow commercialism. We just tied this all together," Sia nodded.

"We're pretty much amazing," Jessica said. "Bring it in for a fistbump." Jessica's fist was already out there for said bump. "You know you want to."

"I... don't know that, actually," she said, frowning but bringing her hand up in a fist, too.

And holding it there because she had no idea what Jessica was even talking about.

"You're learning many things tonight," Jessica said before giving respect in the form of knuckles touching. "Some people would make explodey noises now, but we're too classy for that."

"Yes, we will definitely avoid doing that." Probably because she half expected Jessica to try and get her to say "explodey" when she did it or something.
