Second floor common room- Sunday afternoon

Was it bad that this place didn't take as much getting used to as expected? Sure, day one was filled with a lot of information and surprise and everything. Maddie was rooming with a girl with time traveling parents and a dinosaur, she'd gotten the rundown on the possibility of turning into a boy from a talking pink pony who held mirrors, there was a girl from an alternate universe of where she came from and also at least two Avengers hanging around, one of which was supposed to be dead in Maddie's time. When she went to bed last night, she wasn't sure she was going to be sticking around.

And then this morning she woke up, remembered that she'd been a superhero-in-training two days ago who was going to be a walking ghost in like ten years, and she realized she wasn't really in a different situation than she was before. Well, here they weren't going to ask her to save the world at all, which was exactly the thing she'd been trying to get away from anyway.

Since her side of the room still looked too depressingly empty to want to hide out in there, Maddie ventured out into the common room to check it out. Where "check it out" meant "find a seat on the sofa and make sure they had cable."

Jim stepped aside to give her some room while he continued rifling through the food in the cabinets. He'd already dropped a container of chocolate chip cookies on the counter.

"That or they're keeping the healthy food somewhere else." Which was fine with him. "What's your poison anyway? Sugar? Sweet? Or a little bit of both?"

"Ah, scoping things out," he said, nodding before grabbing the cookies and leaning against the counter. "A common practice when you don't know your surroundings. And knowing where the food is? Very good thing."

"In the dorms?" Jim took a bite of his cookie and chewed thoughtfully. "I've heard there's a pool somewhere in this place. Never been myself. I prefer the beach where there's sun and sand."

Swimming inside just seemed to be missing the point. "Outside the dorms? Now, that depends on what you're into."

"What's wrong with stairs?" Jim wondered curiously. "You seem to have two legs. They look pretty good from where I'm standing. A few stairs won't hurt you."

"Well, I don't make it a point to kill myself on them and I only live on the second floor but I think if you're that desperate, you could find someone to carry you up the stairs," Jim quipped. "Your own personal carriage."

"If it helps, I don't think you'll be missing much if you don't go past the second floor," he offered. "I've only gone past this floor a few times and it's pretty much the same setup as we got here just with different faces."

He shrugged. "Town's a pretty good place to scope out and I've heard they lack a lot of stairs."

"What stairs are we talking about here?" Jim asked honestly. He hadn't been to that many places in town but he couldn't remember having to climb massive amounts of stairs to get there. "Places I've been, they tend to be one floor. The bar, the various little food shops, the beach. I just walked there."
