Second floor common room- Sunday afternoon

Was it bad that this place didn't take as much getting used to as expected? Sure, day one was filled with a lot of information and surprise and everything. Maddie was rooming with a girl with time traveling parents and a dinosaur, she'd gotten the rundown on the possibility of turning into a boy from a talking pink pony who held mirrors, there was a girl from an alternate universe of where she came from and also at least two Avengers hanging around, one of which was supposed to be dead in Maddie's time. When she went to bed last night, she wasn't sure she was going to be sticking around.

And then this morning she woke up, remembered that she'd been a superhero-in-training two days ago who was going to be a walking ghost in like ten years, and she realized she wasn't really in a different situation than she was before. Well, here they weren't going to ask her to save the world at all, which was exactly the thing she'd been trying to get away from anyway.

Since her side of the room still looked too depressingly empty to want to hide out in there, Maddie ventured out into the common room to check it out. Where "check it out" meant "find a seat on the sofa and make sure they had cable."

"I think I might skip the karaoke bar," Maddie decided quickly.

"Not a terrible idea. However, if you're a fan of underage drinking, it's the only bar that serves students," Jessica said. "It's legal here. Yet another weird thing, I know."

"And no one yells at you?" Huh. "This is the weirdest place."

"You're telling me," Jessica said. "But judging by some of the people I know, it's kind of encouraged."

"The weirdness or getting yelled at?" she asked.

"The underage drinking. The weirdness. Whatever you want to call it," Jessica said.

"You don't drink?" she checked.

Because she couldn't ask 'You're not weird?' Even she was too tactful for that.

"I tend not to," Jessica said. "I have a very big 'responsibility' thing I try to live up to."

"With great access to drink comes great responsibility," Maddie said automatically.

Jessica gave Maddie a side-eye, which was impressive since Maddie was in front of her. "That sounds familiar for some reason."

Oh, right, she hadn't planned on talking about that stuff yet. "I think maybe Giant Man got quoted saying it," she lied.

"... Giant Man?" Jessica said. "Not Spider-Man? Because in my world, he's the guy who was throwing that around all the time." Jessica would know.

"Sure, Spider-Man says he came up with it, but..." And then she shrugged because she didn't buy that, personally.

"He didn't come up with it," Jessica said. "The way I heard it, in my universe, at least, is that somebody much smarter than him gave him that advice. But he didn't really get it, not at first. The one time he ignored that responsibility, someone very important to him died. And that's when he understood what it really meant. And he lived with it as his motto for the rest of his life."

With that kind of story, Maddie figured she'd stepped on toes without even knowing they were there somehow. "Sounds like a really detailed article?" she tried.

"I met him a couple of times. He saved my life once," Jessica said. "And seriously, he would drop that story at a moment's notice."

"How'd he save your life?" Okay, so blah blah leaving the superhero thing behind blah, but Maddie couldn't help but be curious. Just because she couldn't do it didn't mean that it wasn't impressive when other people could.

"I was doing something stupid, Doctor Octopus wanted to use me as a science experiment, Spider-Man kept that from happening," Jessica said. "It was the weirdest day I've ever had."

"It's a good thing he stopped that," Maddie said seriously, kind of stuck on the science experiment part for some reason.

"I definitely agree. I wouldn't be here if he didn't," Jessica said.
