2nd Floor Common Room | Monday Evening

Once again, boredom was driving Jim into the common room. It was just so much easier to walk down the hall then to walk into town and Jim could be a lazy bastard when he wanted to be.

He switched the television on but barely looked at it because he was already on his way to the kitchen to find something suitable for dinner. His head was in the refrigerator when the noise coming from the television caught his attention.

He looked up and stared. What was going on in this movie? There was corn and then popcorn and Jim was stunned.

Completely stunned. And yet, now he was watching.

"Hey, Jimbo, what's on?" Jessica asked, heading into the common room as if it were hers. Or, possibly, as if it was a shared public space. Either one. "Is it something terrible? It looks like something terrible."

"I don't know what the hell this is but I know I never want to see corn again," Jim said, having finally grabbed an apple from the fridge so he could sit down. "But, you want terrible. I think you got it, Jessie."

Well, Jimbo couldn't go unchallenged.

"I never said I wanted terrible. I was just noting that it looks pretty terrible based on two seconds of watching," Jessica said. "And you say 'Jessie' like that's a ridiculous name. But it just doesn't have the same oomph 'Jimbo' does."

"Whether you want it or you're resigning yourself to it, you're getting it," he said, flicking a hand at the still running terrible movie.

God, it was bad. Jim winced. But, he didn't change the channel.

"What, you prefer something like Juju? We could go for that. Jessie was a practice go round."

"Wouldn't it be Jeje?" Jessica asked. "There's no 'u' even in the vicinity of my name."

"And there's no 'o' in mine but that didn't stop you," Jim pointed out. "Besides, Juju sounds better. Who cares if there's no 'u'?"

"Yeah, but 'Jimbo' is just 'Jim' with a suffix. That's a completely different thing," Jessica said. "You could call me 'Jessbo,' but that doesn't even sound like a thing."

"Or you could call me Jim but if you're going with Jimbo, then I'm going with Juju," he said, having decided that. "I like it. I think it fits. It's very...you."

Whatever that meant.

"I'm not the type to use the same nickname twice in quick succession, Jimmers," Jessica said. "I'm a creative soul."

"That is a sad, sad thing to be creative about," Jim said, shaking his head. "You could go with something that might make you a buck or two but instead, you go with nicknames? Sad."

"Don't worry, I'm creative about theoretically profitable things, too," Jessica said. "This is just the kind of thing I do on the side for fun."

"So, if you've got all this creativity coursing through you, why are you wasting your time with school?" Jim had to ask. "I'd be out of here so fast."

"Because a fancy high school diploma I cook up in Photoshop doesn't work as well as a real one with notarized transcripts," Jessica pointed out.

Jim rolled his eyes at that. "It's a piece of paper. It's not gonna change anyone's world. I might use it as a makeshift coaster."

"You don't want to be a scientist. The science community doesn't usually look kindly on smug young women who decide they don't need school," Jessica said.

"Well, you're right about that. I definitely don't wanna be a scientist," Jim agreed, pulling a face of disgust. "Why would anyone wanna do that?"

Too much work, not enough glory. "What kind of scientist?"

The kind that got a lot of glory. Tony Stark was kind of an idol. "The kind who invents things that change peoples' lives."

"For the better! That part's important."

"Has the world been that good to you that you wanna throw puppies and rainbows at it?" Jim asked, sounding a little cynical. "Do one good thing and you'll get kicked in the teeth."

"I've had my teeth kicked in more times than you could guess. But a smart person once told me that if you have the ability to do something to help people, you also have the responsibility to do so," Jessica said. "And that, Jimmy, is something I live my life by."

"Huh."

They were maybe a little different there. Or maybe Jim thought they were different and he was just hiding the part that agreed with her. Hiding it under a lot of issues.

"So, what happens if you wash out of being all science-y and smart? What's the backup plan?"

"Stand-up comedy. Because let's face it, I'm hilarious," Jessica said immediately.

"Well, we can definitely agree on that one, Jess Jess," he said with a little smile. "See, I think I'd go for that one before science. Because you don't even have to go to school for that one. Much easier road to the top for you."

The movie was still doing terrible things on the television. Jim winced again. "Hey, maybe you'd be so funny, you'd make something like this in the future."

"I don't think it's possible to do this from a place of comedy. This is what happens when you sincerely try to do something dramatic and it fails spectacularly," Jessica pointed out.

"Is that what this is?" he asked, scratching his cheek. "Maybe they've burned all copies of this in the future. Be a mercy killing."

He shook his head. "I mean, I know some people like their classics even where I'm from but this shouldn't live to that time."
