Kappa Delta Gremlin [1st floor rec room, Wednesday afternoon]

"At our first meeting, Miss Borgia expressed interest in raising money to help charities," Rilla said with a smile. "Valentine's Day is coming up on the 14th and traditionally, the Student Council sells flowers for people to send to those they love, admire, or wish to make happy that day. Do you think we could sell cookies or candy--" she gave Stacey a small grin, "or perhaps little cones full of strawberries, to give people more options? There's also a dance that weekend--perhaps we could sell picnic dinners for that evening? Sandwiches require very little skill to put together."

She looked down at her own unadorned nails. "We could also offer to help people with their hair or makeup for the dance, but I am absolutely hopeless when it comes to makeup! Is anyone else better? Anyway, eat some of the snacks, drink tea, and come up with your own suggestions, please! Miss McGill and I are eager to hear them!"

"I don't know anything about either hair or makeup," Sholeh said, timidly raising her hand. "But maybe a group trip to the spa place in town?"

"That wouldn't be too expensive?" Rilla fretted.

"I don't know," Sholeh said, shrinking down a little at the thought of having said the wrong thing. "Maybe we could get a discount or something? As a group?"

"It couldn't hurt to ask," Rilla decided. "Perhaps we could meet there next week."

"...Ooh, we can get manicures."

Stacey had priorities.

"Those are the pretty nail things, right?" Sholeh checked. She wasn't up on most fashionable ideas, but she did read magazines.

"I could help make picnic lunches," Minako volunteered between bites of her snack. "OH! Or make-up or shopping for dresses or--!"

Look, it was a holiday of love. That was right up Minako's alley. It was her calling!

Rilla smiled. "Do you love Valentine's Day too?"

"Hai!" Minako cheered, throwing Rilla a salute. "In Japan, only girls give chocolates on Valentine's Day, the boys do it for White Day, but it's a holiday all about love! Anything can happen, and romance is everywhere!"

"When's White Day?" Rilla asked, rather fancying the idea of getting chocolates twice.

"March Fourteenth!" Minako informed her. "So, the boys get chocolates in February, and then they have a month to decide what sort of message they want to send to each girl who gave them chocolate, and can buy gifts accordingly. Cookies, jewellery, white chocolate, white clothing, and marshmallows... white or pale-colored, since it's White Day."

"They can't just give you your chocolates back, right?" Rilla checked.

"No way! They can, like, get you the three dollar box of chocolates from the pharmacy as the obligatory 'thank you,' but they HAVE to give something back or be seen as a horrible, rude, dishonorable and uncouth person," Minako said, shaking her head. "A boy our age could get shunned by the other boys for the rest of the year, because no girl will want to go out with someone who has delinquent friends."

"Very true," Rilla said vehemently. "I'm so glad to meet someone else with a sense of propriety!"

Edwardian-mannered Rilla had some problems with 21st Century casualness.
