First Floor Lobby, Thursday

Alec had four yellow roses and a pink carnation as he sat in the lobby today to sell tickets for the dance, and he was pretty happy about it. Also, he had a date tomorrow. That was pretty nice as well.

Today just kind of rocked. Come get your dance tickets from the weirdly upbeat Shadowhunter in the lobby, guys. That's what he was here for.

"Hold still." Jace wanted to send Izzy a picture of Alec looking so cute doing his StuCo duty.

So obviously Alec spun around. "Wh-- is there something behind me?"

Alec, you spaz.

"...Oh."

"You look so cute," Jace said as he snapped a picture. "Like a little politician."

"I don't think they normally sell tickets to events," Alec said after dutifully allowing Jace to take the picture. "Oh, thank you for the flower."

On-topic? Not really, but it was sitting right there.

"You're welcome," he said. "You should feel honored; I've never given a man flowers before."

"I didn't know people really did that," Alec admitted. "For... non-romantic reasons, I mean."

And since they were the only ones in the lobby right now, he didn't feel too bad about shrugging his shoulders in an expression of resigned non-comprehension and sighing, "Mundane traditions."

"I don't really understand them myself." He didn't really get flowers as gifts in general. "But I decided to be festive for once. It was either flowers or giving you those mystery chocolates that usually end in tears."

"...Why do they end in tears?" Didn't most people like chocolates?

Mysteries were a little more controversial, though.

"You bite into them thinking they're one flavor and then it's always the one you want the least," Jace said. "If someone got me those I'd assume they hated me."

"Well, that's why you should use the sheet on the bottom of the box with the map of what the different flavors look like," Alec reasoned. "There's no surprises that way. It's much safer."

Leave it to Alec to overthink chocolates.

"Well that just sucks the fun out of the whole thing." Really, Alec. "So did you get flowers from anyone else?"

"Oh, it's fun to accidentally get stuck with your least favorite flavor when you were expecting something better." It was chocolate, Alec. It wasn't like it was poison. "Yeah. A few from my new fake sibling and one from Sparkle. Did you?"

"Some from Natalie," he said. "Which was surprising; she seems to be against the whole holiday this year. Must still be moping over breaking up with that human equivalent of watching paint dry."

"Hasn't she been doing that for quite a while now?"

That did sometimes happen with breakups, Alec. That level of scowling was uncalled-for.

"I don't get it," Jace said with a shrug. "Must be a mundane thing. Izzy isn't hung up on guys after she breaks up with them."

"I guess Izzy must be more practical than she is," Alec guessed. "...You don't hear that a lot."

Well, for one thing, it wasn't actually true, Alec.

"I just don't get the point of getting so emotional over this sort of thing. If it doesn't work out, then it doesn't work out."

Also Izzy usually had another guy lined up to distract her soon after breaking up with somebody. That probably helped.

"Exactly! And apparently I'm the weird one for thinking that." Having Alec agree with you doesn't necessarily make you right, Jace.

Especially given that Alec's perspective would change considerably once he actually got dumped himself. Damn it, Magnus.

"It's just... dating isn't important." Once again, Alec wasn't necessarily confident in that so much as he was just saying words that sounded logical. "If you do it, that's your business, but there's no point making a whole fuss about it once it ends."

Yeah. That was logical enough. Right?

"I couldn't agree with your more," Jace said. "It's naive to think you'll be with someone forever."

...

"This is wonderful Valentine's talk. Aren't you trying to peddle tickets to a dance that celebrates love and affection?"

This was a good point. "True," Alec admitted. "But there's no one else here."

Except that squirrel.

"...This might be awkward if it's reported on on the radio."

"A little bit," he said. "Well, not for me. Maybe for you though and that Sparkle guy."

He still couldn't believe that was a name.

"And for you and Natalie," Alec pointed out. Because gossiping about someone you didn't like was fine, but when it was your friend...

"But I think Sparkle's... reasonable, mostly," he said. "I think he and I are probably on the same page when it comes to avoiding unnecessary drama."

Alec, Sparkle sang Cabaret songs in common rooms for fun.

"I think Natalie expects me to be difficult." He had outright said that he was, so it shouldn't be a surprise. "And the guy's name is Sparkle."

Dramatics came with that name, Alec.

"Yes, it's not ideal," Alec sighed, missing the point about the dramatics. "It's not like he chose it. I don't think."

"I should hope not." Said the person who voluntarily went by Jace.

"You know, it could be argued that your choice of name to go by is indicative of theatrical tendencies as well," Alec pointed out.

"I am the least dramatic person on the planet." Yeah, no. "You can blame your mother for my name."

"She was probably trying to avoid the ego boost that would come from you having a name that literally means 'God's gift,'" Alec said dryly. Because that was what Jonathan meant. Apt, no?

As one also does. A different one. Not the same one as before.
