The Roof, Thursday Evening

There was not much of a reason for Yeul to be up on the roof. It was still rather cool and it was getting dark, both of which could be used as reasons to go inside rather than hang around outside.

But she was enjoying the view of the sky and didn't have anywhere else to be so why shouldn't she remain on the roof?

The only thing that would have made it better would have been a hot drink, but Yeul was content enough without one for now. If she remembered, perhaps later she'd get one…

With recent things being the way they were, Jessica decided she could happily spend some time on the roof of the tallest building around. Well, the tallest building that wasn't a castle. Because that would spoil the whole 'tall buildings reminding her of home' thing.

Anyway, she came up to the roof and was only slightly surprised to see someone else up here, too. "Well, this place seems slightly busier than I thought it would be. How's it going, Yeul?"

"Hello Jessica," Yeul said, smiling as she turned to see her. "I am well. Were you expecting no one to be up here?"

"Well, I was expecting myself to show up eventually. But beyond that I couldn't think of anyone who'd be wacky enough to spend their night on the roof of a six-story building in near-freezing weather," Jessica said. "But now I apparently know somebody else who is.

"It's been colder here," Yeul said, laughing softly. "And I've been in colder places. I just wanted to see the sky tonight." She paused. "Did you need the roof for something? I could leave, if you wished."

"Oh, no, don't worry about it. I usually find that it's kind of awkward to be on a roof alone too long anyway," Jessica said. "After a while you start questioning your decisions in life. Like, 'seriously, why are you still on he roof?' At least now I can claim being social."

"As good a reason as any for me to stay," Yeul said agreeably. "Though questioning yourself is not always a bad way to spend the time. Did you come up here for a reason or rather because it seemed like that sort of night?"

"Little bit of column A, little bit of column B," Jessica said. "The roof just seems appropriate for certain moods, you know? I'm just in a roof mood."

"I think I can understand that," Yeul said, nodding. "Some nights it is nice to be here. Even if it's cold! Next time, I think I shall bring a warm drink."

Hot chocolate? Apple cider? Tea?

"Really, we just need a coffee maker up here somewhere," Jessica said. "We just need a little coffee shed for it or something."

"You know, that started out as a joke, but I actually think it could be handy."

"I would be no help with making it," Yeul noted, "but I am certain there's someone on the island who would both consider it a worthy project and have the skills to complete it."

"If I had a coffee maker and some tools on me, we'd have it ready in no time," Jessica said. "But just about the only thing I expected less than other people up here is a construction project."

"I cannot imagine expecting that on a random trip to the roof!"

Really, who would?

"And it is not something that needs to be done right away, if at all," Yeul continued, because she was easy that way. "Though I am sure there's several coffee makers downstairs if you needed one in a hurry."

Which would not solve the tool problem but was a start?

"There's no rush. I'll just keep it in mind for the next time I come up here," Jessica said.

"Are you usually much for rushing?" Yeul wondered.

"Depends on the thing," Jessica said. "If it's important, I like to be efficient. If it's a coffee shed on the roof, I can take my time."

She nodded slowly. "That makes sense. I wonder if it's even allowed to make a shed on the roof?" Despite that, she didn't sound too concerned about it being allowed or not.

"If anyone objects, I'll just bribe them with delicious roof coffee," Jessica said. "I mean, it's going to be the same as whatever coffee we have in the common rooms. But it'll be made on the roof. That adds intrinsic value."

"It will be unique in placement," Yeul agreed. "People like that sort of thing."

"It's a really great brooding corner," Emily noted from her spot near the edge. "Although I don't thing there's such a thing as group brooding."

Emily liked the roof. It was quiet, it was cool and she was usually alone. But sometimes she got there and found people already using it. Half the time she just walked away...but sometimes she felt a bit more like talking.

"Enjoying the silence?" asked Emily in a low tone as a way of saying hi.

"It is nice," Yeul said cheerfully. "But it is also nice to see other people up here to talk to. Unless you wanted to enjoy the silence?"

"There will be more nights to enjoy it," Emily said as she shrugged.
