Second Floor Common Room, Wednesday Afternoon

Fact the first: Gert had gone out this afternoon in search of one (1) sandwich.

Fact the second: Someone (a bartender? Gert hadn't caught his (her?) name, but he (she?) had hair tucked into a baseball cap and seemed very drunk) had been racing around a town with two garbage bags that held a combined two hundred bagels.

Fact the third: Evidently running away from a pursuer, who Gert assumed was the owner of the bagel store, Baseball Cap had thrust one of the bags at Gert and yelled at her to take it and run.

And so it was that a baffled Gert hauled a massive bag of about a hundred bagels up the stairs through town and up to the second floor common room, at which point she proceeded to dump the bag on the counter and collapse on the couch with a cinnamon raisin bagel with cream cheese.

What. The hell.

"I have so many questions," Maddie said. "Like this drunk person does realize it's only afternoon, right?"

"Maybe... he-slash-she was just really committed to getting a balanced breakfast?" she offered. "Not a lot of point getting bagels after lunchtime, I guess. How long does it take for bagels to go stale, anyway?"

"I don't know, maybe a couple days?" she said. "I've never tested it. Now I think we're going to find out with all these..."

"Yeah, I don't think there's even enough students here to do one per person or anything," Gert said. "Maybe I could put some in the freezer..."

But that would mean getting up, and she was really comfortable.

"So, surprise bagels aside, how're you doing?"

"Kind of enjoying the quiet," Maddie admitted. "Hoping no one goes insane or gets kidnapped this weekend. You know how it goes."

"Yeah, I could go for that too," agreed she who had been a half-ninja for the past few days. "...If tomorrow winds up being somehow both, you and I never had this conversation, deal?"

"Deal. I'm sure we have enough bagels to bribe the squirrels," Maddie said immediately.

"Too bad our drunk benefactor didn't chip in some alcohol too," Gert remarked. "That would have really sealed the deal."

"It's a school dorm, I'm sure someone's willing to lend us some," Maddie said. "And if not, they too can probably be bribed in bagels."

It might be currency for a few days.

Yeah, currency at Fandom was pretty weird. "Man," said Gert, "this school is just a soap shortage and a widespread cigarette addiction away from turning into a prison, isn't it."

In more ways than one, as far as she was concerned, but she specifically meant the whole exchange-of-goods thing for right now.

"No guards at all, though." Which Maddie loved, by the way.

"Unless they're invisible," Gert offered, which, she realized, made her sound super paranoid. So she added, "Or some kind of rodent."

Somehow that was better.

"Not sure rodents would be very good at keeping this particular group of kids in line..." she said.
