Second Floor Common Room, Wednesday Afternoon

Fact the first: Gert had gone out this afternoon in search of one (1) sandwich.

Fact the second: Someone (a bartender? Gert hadn't caught his (her?) name, but he (she?) had hair tucked into a baseball cap and seemed very drunk) had been racing around a town with two garbage bags that held a combined two hundred bagels.

Fact the third: Evidently running away from a pursuer, who Gert assumed was the owner of the bagel store, Baseball Cap had thrust one of the bags at Gert and yelled at her to take it and run.

And so it was that a baffled Gert hauled a massive bag of about a hundred bagels up the stairs through town and up to the second floor common room, at which point she proceeded to dump the bag on the counter and collapse on the couch with a cinnamon raisin bagel with cream cheese.

What. The hell.

"True, but bagels are delicious," Victor returned. "It wouldn't be like giving her a big heap of Brussels sprouts."

"But I don't think she knows bagels are delicious," she pointed out.

"And there is the hole in my plan," Victor shrugged. "Guess we'll just have to eat 'em without dinosaur help."

"Huge chore," Maddie said. "Huge."

You say that now, when there was still a whole bag to go through.

"I'm willing to take a second one, just to do my share," Victor said solemnly. "And once they start getting stale, Gert could get the ducks at the pond really fat."

"Or hey, do we do science fairs here? There'd be a looot of mold projects," she said.

"We should," Victor mused idly. "A science fair here would be, like, half mold and paper mache volcanos, half crazy alien future tech."

"And then Tony Stark would blow everyone out of the water," she added.

"Yeah, but he's a ringer," Victor said, sing-song. "Besides, Henry Pym is, um, kind of my grandfather. It'd be, like, wrong for me to let Tony win by all that much."

Which was not to say Tony wouldn't win, but that was a bit beside the point.

"Really?" If she sounded a little surprised, well. "He ran the school I just came from. Well, he still does."

"There's this Ultron factor so I try to stay out of his way, but ... yeah," Victor said, bashful. "I only met him last fall."

He was more interested in the rest of what Maddie had said. "The school worked? The last I heard, it was just getting organized or so I assume from trying to compare publication dates."

"Oh," she said, but went along with the school thing because there was waaaay less chance of her putting her foot in her mouth that way. "Avengers Academy? Yeah, it worked, I guess. I hear there are more people there now than when I went there, but it was kind of a mixed experience for me."

Victor was grateful of her choice of conversation. So, I was a science project by a crazy robot who wants to take over the world and kill everybody was not exactly his favorite thing to explain -- though of course he'd mentioned it to start with.

"I get that," he said. "I mean, if it had been the best thing ever you would still be there, right?"

"True. I liked it just fine, but the hero thing was a little... big," Maddie said. "The mansion got kind of wrecked before I left. I hear they're in LA now."

"Wouldn't surprise me," Victor said, idly wondering if the L.A. location meant he was going to end up there after graduation. "And yeah, I get where constant fighting, the kind of fights Avengers attract, isn't really what everybody wants to do all the time."
