Third Floor Common Room, Monday Afternoon

Isabelle had had no classes yet. And sure, she could have gone and found Alec already, but it was almost like a game now, to see how long it'd be before he'd realize she was around. Or when she'd get bored and go find him. Whichever happened first. So instead, today, she'd used up all that time wandering around the island and getting accustomed to the town and the feel of its streets under her feet. It was no New York, she knew that much. But she supposed it had its own charm. Maybe. Really, she was reserving judgment – of which she had quite enough to go around – until later. It was too quiet, though, she knew that much. She was used to the buzz of a big city.

But Izzy was a resourceful girl. And since it was only her third day on the island, she was perfectly content (for now, anyway) to be perching on the edge of the couch in her common room, getting acquainted with mundie television. Which really meant all television. And for something that seemed to take up so much time in other people's lives, Isabelle was not finding it that interesting.

Until she found Food Network.

"... Ooh."

Fear the great Shadowhunter, paying rapt attention to the secrets of soufflé making, with her elbows on her knees and her chin in her hands.

Toby didn't have classes today either, as it happened. What he did have was an ice cream craving, which is what led him all the way down to the third floor.

"Hey," he greeted Isabelle. "I've tried making soufflés before," he added, after a glance at the television. "It didn't end well."

Toby's original reply went right out the window as Isabelle looked up and he got a good look at her face. He knew that face! That face had once told him he had a way nicer rack than a certain Jace Wayland.

The lack of a mental narrative bemoaning the sudden acquisition of boobs seemed to indicate that this wasn't a genderswapped-Alec, though.

"Um," he stammered. "No idea- it just kind of, pfft," he made a collapsing motion with his hands, "once I got it out of the oven, you know?"

... How in the heck did one bring up 'you look exactly like my ex-roommate's adopted brother when he turns into a girl' in conversation, anyway?

"I'm sure one day I'll manage," he said confidently. Because while he was hardly a gourmet cook, he wasn't exactly a disaster in the kitchen. Unlike some people.

"I'm Toby, by the way."

"Cookie dough ice cream," Toby informed her, holding the container aloft victoriously. "Or rather, my floor's sad lack of it."

"Well... milk products are an important part of the food rainbow?" Toby said with a laugh. It was a pretty weak justification, and he was well aware of that. "Or, yeah, no, it's totally unhealthy, but it tastes good."

"Jace... Wayland?" Toby asked, raising an eyebrow. Maybe that would explain her face!

"He was my roommate," Toby explained. "I'm gonna take a wild guess then and say you must be related to Alec?"

Toby wasn't going to call her on the fakeness of that realization, of course. "I wondered why your face looked familiar," he admitted. "Did Jace end up sending you pictures of the time we all turned in to girls? Alec looked just like you." He remembered his former roommate threatening to do so, but had no idea if he'd followed through.

Vider had a problem, one which saw her wandering around looking for someone to ask a question. When she finally found some people, she stepped into the common room, held up her slightly crumpled class schedule, and asked with no preamble, she was so exasperated, "Is anyone else's schedule completely messed up? All the days are spelled wrong!"

[identity profile] godgavemecable.livejournal.com 2013-09-02 06:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Toby shrugged. "Mine looked okay to me," he shared. "What's yours like?" he asked, gesturing for her to let him take a closer look.

"It's all messed up!" she complained, waving the paper around. "Look, Monday--that one was easy enough to figure out they meant Moonsday, and thank Odin, because I have two classes today--and then there's, uh, Tuesday? And--I'm not even sure how to pronounce this. Wed-ness-day?"

[identity profile] godgavemecable.livejournal.com 2013-09-02 07:05 pm (UTC)(link)
"You don't really pronounce the first d," Toby supplied. "But that's- pretty much how they're supposed to be, here?" he said with a shrug. "What are you used to?"

Vider was just. Going to stare. "Moonsday, Tyrsday, Odinsday...?" You know, the normal way to spell things. "And what in the name of the Alfather is a Saturday supposed to be?"

"Saturn's day, I think, originally?" Toby supplied. He'd never really given too much thought to the days of the week, aside from the fact that the French versions mostly sounded like planets. "Look, why don't we-" he dug out his phone and pulled up the wiki article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Names_of_the_days_of_the_week#Germanic_tradition) on the days of the week, "-compare yours with mine. Maybe that'll help?"

Vider was still frowning at her schedule. "Why is Thorsday spelled with a u? His name's not Thur."

"Or maybe I got a crappy one," Vider grumbled.
