All Around the Dorms, Thursday Evening

Kathy loved Halloween. It was the one night of the year back home when she could pretend to be anything other than quiet, bookish Kathy and become someone loud, exciting, and colorful. Even here, where she was doing a semi-okay job of that by herself, Halloween remained the best holiday ever.

Which was why she had put on a pair of mouse ears, a silly outfit, and whiskers made of eyeliner and grabbed a pillowcase.

She was going to go trick or treating around the dorms, dammit. There was candy falling outside. No one had the right to complain about not having any candy.

...And hopefully not regret this too much tomorrow, after the sugar crash and resulting embarrassment kicked in.

Yeah, Sparkle hadn't really expected someone to hit up his room looking for tricks or treats, considering the weather out there today. And sure, he'd gone out there and had filled up his backpack and pillowcases three times over, because really, you get an opportunity like this and you just don't pass it up. But that didn't mean he was going to hand out the spoils of his trek outside, here.

"So," he noted, lounging in his doorway and giving her a side-eye, "you have looked outside today, right?"

Kathy just sighed. "Yes, I have, and yes, I have some candy in my room, too. Did nobody ever just go trick or treating here for the fun of it? To put on a cool costume and wander around saying hello?"

Fandom High Jaded Society. Population: Everyone.

"Yeah, no. Back home once you hit like junior high school they'll laugh you away from the door if you go around asking for candy. Usually I just throw eggs around."

Because if assholes weren't going to give him candy for being 'too old,' they got what was coming to them, damn it.

"I'm usually a bigger fan of the 'trick' part. Why, you want something that bad?"

Kathy wasn't sure what he meant. "Are you asking if I want to trick you for not giving me candy or something?" she asked. "Because, no, I don't want anything that badly I'm going to prank someone for it."

She frowned, thoughtfully. "You could have spent money on candy instead of eggs to throw at people's houses, right? But you didn't. So, obviously, it wasn't just about the candy."

"Nah, I was asking if you wanted to be tricked. I mean, you're going around offering up the option."

Sparkle was a shithead and he was proud of it.

"Anyhow, who says I spent money on those eggs?"

"Bull. It's 'Offer me a treat or get tricked' and you know it. And why aren't you all dressed up anyway. I would guess that you'd've loved this holiday."

Call it a hunch, but she saw your makeup, Sparks.

"And even if you didn't spend money on them, you still chose to grab eggs to fling rather than candy to eat. So you know there's more to trick or treating than just getting candy."

Yeul's door had been open enough to hear Sparkle talking, and someone answering him back, though aside from the fact that she idly noted Sparkle seemed to be enjoying himself, she didn't really listen since it wasn't any of her business.

When the knock on her door came, though, she set her book aside and blinked calmly at the girl in her doorway.

"...Hello?" she said politely, but somewhat puzzled.

Guess who didn't know about Halloween, Kathy? Guess.

"Costumes cost cash I don't have, little Mouse," Sparkle replied with a shrug of his shoulders. "Mom and Dad didn't see fit to buy me a costume this year."

Was he going to mention that he didn't have a mother or a father? Nope.

"What's the point of going door to door if you're not going to actually get anything out of it? I can grab you something for your bag if you want, Mouse, but it's not going to be, like, anything awesome."

Sparkle, you dirty little liar. Making it sound like you didn't have a hundred different things in your closet that you could use for a costume. The narration is onto you.

"I'm Kathy," she said, extending her hand. "And couldn't you just, I don't know, make a ghost costume or something? I can help you if you want?"

Seriously, she didn't need the treats!

...Not that she'd turn one down if it were offered.

"Oh, awesome!" Kathy said, delighted. "Someone else who dressed up! High five!"

"Sparkle," he replied, shaking her hand with no actual confirmation that he was speaking his name, here. "And I'm really not the sort to ~~meta for~~ Charlie Brown together a costume, here. Besides, I need those bedsheets."

He slept in them!

"If I really wanted to dress up, I'd toss on some heels and show off my legs, anyhow."

And he wouldn't even have to borrow his roommate's clothes.

Probably best for both of them that way.

"Okay, so do that then," Kathy said. "You don't need Mommy and Daddy's help to get dressed up anymore."

"Oh, but they have such high expectations for their little boy!"

Sparkle, stop being a shit.

"So, what, are you the Halloween Police or something? I'm not actually going door to door so I'm like the Grunch that Stole Samhain?"

Theo had considered going out to the party in town but he hadn't made it there yet. He didn't know anyone and that made him a little hesitant even if both Ange and Dev were encouraging him for different reasons.

Right now, he was hanging out, eating some candy that had hit him in the head earlier. When someone knocked on his door, he wandered over and opened it up.

"Hey, Kathy!" he said, smiling as he pulled open the door.

Someone who answered the door without being confused or scornful? THEO WAS THE BEST EVER.

"Happy Halloween!" she said, holding up her pillowcase sack. "Trick or treat!"

Yup. She was that corny.

"You started making fun of me for going door to door," Kathy pointed out. "I just think you're jealous because you didn't think of it first."

"Hey, I actually have candy too!" He'd even bought some earlier in the week so he wouldn't just be giving out candy that fell from the sky. "Hang on a second."

He left the door open and went to retrieve the bag of peanut butter cups that he'd bought. He reappeared quickly.

"Ta da!"

"You are so prepared!" Kathy just had to grin at him and applaud. "So far, everyone else has just pointed outside and told me to get my own darn candy if I wanted it so much."

And then she had to explain time and time again that she wasn't trick or treating for the candy, exactly.

"I just thought it was weird going door to door asking for candy when it's pouring Skittles out there," Sparkle replied with a shrug of his shoulders. "But if you're not doing it for the candy, then I figure it's weird you're not going to accept a trick, instead. Personally, I think you just want all the tricks to yourself. Trick hog."

Yes, he was still rolling. Because why not?

"But hey, if you really want something to go into the pillowcase, Mouse, I'm sure I can dig up something."

Would it be a stolen salt shaker, or a Dite's coupon? Really, the odds were even, here.

"I liked trick or treating as a kid," he said, dropping the candy into her pillowcase. "So, I bought the candy just to kind of bring the feeling back."

He didn't have a costume but he had the candy so he was halfway there. "Your costume looks great, by the way."

"Thank you!" she beamed. "I just grabbed stuff that I had around my room, you know? For pretty much the exact same reason you got the candy; I wanted to get that little kid excited feeling back."

She tilted her head and looked at him. "No costume for you?"

"Kathy," Kathy repeated. "And who wants to get tricked? I don't see you volunteering for a trick or two since you're not offering me any candy, even though it is literally raining right outside your window."

"Well, you wanna come in and hold your pillowcase out my window or something? Because the way I see it, you're expecting a lot of payoff for trick-or-treating at, like, sixteen years old anyhow," Sparkle replied, smirking. He was having way too much fun with this. "You can't call me lazy for not paying out, here. It's not like I carved a pumpkin to set outside my door or wrote a sign saying that I was passin' stuff out, you know? Maybe I like don't believe in handing out candy. Rots your teeth. Either way, you came to my door expecting something and now I'm the bad guy for not delivering?"

His smirk was now a grin. Clearly, he was teasing, here.

... Probably.

"I kind of failed at that."

He'd had thoughts but just got a little distracted. Two competing voices in his head tended to do that to him. He rubbed his cheek.

"Halloween kind of surprised me. Forgot what day it was until this morning."

"Want some help throwing one together?" Kathy offered. "I'm pretty good at finding stuff to make up a costume. A sheet and some pins and you can be your very own Greek god."

She laughed. "Or an angel looking for his wings?"
