2nd Floor Common Room | Wednesday Afternoon

Jim didn't know why he'd come back from Haiti before checking to see if the island was being weird. He really didn't. He'd just come back and as soon as he'd settled down in the common room, he'd noticed his arms were now a very festive shade of green and red. At first, he thought he'd caught some rash from being in Haiti and had almost called Natalie to yell but then cooler heads had prevailed and he figured the island was being whimsical.

Jim just prayed this went away quickly because he didn't need his arms colored like he was going to be some Christmas ornament. Right now, he was ignoring it as best he could while he ate some lunch and watched some random movie on television. Every once in awhile, he tried rubbing the colors away with his hand or a napkin only to sigh when the colors remained just as vibrant as ever.

Jim rolled his eyes and went back to the movie.

"It does make you look dashing," Gert drawled. "But that makes more sense. Spreading Christmas spirit with tinted skintones. Personally, I'd just rather a rain of gifts."

"You think this place would do something that normal?" Jim asked, glancing over at her. "That wouldn't be fun. It wouldn't be quirky."

[arsenicmauls]

"Sure, why not?" she said, though actually she wasn't quite as confident as all that. "Some of the weirdness is good stuff, right?"

"Still weird," Jim pointed out. "My arms are red and green. I feel like I have an exotic disease."

[arsenicmauls]

"You could take this as an opportunity to troll your friends," Gert suggested. "Tell them you have three weeks to live. See how nice people are."

She made her way back from the fridge to the couch, soda in hand. "Except you're probably not the only one suffering from this, so maybe don't actually do that."

"It's not a bad idea for something in the future," Jim said with a shrug. "Maybe next time the island decides to paint me colors or something. Definitely not a bad idea. This mean you're not sporting any colors anywhere?"

[arsenicmauls]

"Nope," Gert said. "I guess the island's being nice to me for once. You have my sympathies."

Except she was also a little bit smug.

"Wonder how long it'll last," she mused. "If you're stuck with it till Christmas, you might need to invest in some concealer."

"You saying I should wear makeup?" Jim asked, raising an eyebrow. "I bet I could rock some eyeliner."

[arsenicmauls]

"Hey, wear makeup or don't wear makeup, it's up to you," Gert said. "I'm just saying it might mute the whole... brightness of it all." She waved a hand vaguely. "Especially if it spreads."

"But yeah, since making your eyes pop is apparently a priority of yours, eyeliner would probably be a viable thing to try too."

"Please don't talk about this spreading to other parts of my body," Jim said, wincing. "I don't wanna think about what that might do to other parts of my anatomy."

"Yeah, seems like a pretty ironclad mood-killer," Gert agreed. "Not to mention the stares you'd get in locker rooms."

"You are not a helpful person, Gert," Jim said, making a face though he didn't mean it. "I hope the next thing this island does is rain down molasses and it sticks in your hair."

He didn't mean that either.

[arsenicmauls]

"You wound me, Jim," Gert said solemnly. Except not solemnly at all. "But I bet I could pull off a shaved head if that happened."

[pursuedthestars]

"Unless you have a super circular head and look like a cue ball," he joked. "Or have some weird, insane birthmark under there."

[arsenicmauls]

"Or maybe the top of my head is striped red and green right now," Gert commented, "and I just lucked out in terms of visibility."

"Would you really shave your head if it rained molasses?" he wondered, curious.

[arsenicmauls]

"If it got stuck in my hair and I had to cut it out, probably," Gert said. "Molasses is really sticky. Wouldn't you?"

"Nah. I'd probably go back home and since the future's gotta have a way to get molasses out of hair without having to resort to head shaving," Jim said. "Some super shampoo or something."

[arsenicmauls]

"Good to know the future is making improvements that matter," Gert said dryly, but she actually kind of meant it. "Do you have semi-permanent hair dye that lasts longer than a week? If so, I might have to ask you to run a quick errand for me next time you're home."

"Haven't ever checked into that since I've got no need to dye my hair," he said, fluffing his oh so fluffy hair. "But, I've already got something else I've gotta pick up back home so I might actually check into it for you. For fun."

[arsenicmauls]

"Much appreciated," Gert said sincerely, shooting Jim a thumbs-up. "I've always wondered whether the short duration of the dye lasting has to do with dye technology not being what it could be yet, or me just buying the cheap kind, so this'll be a good experiment."

Gert was a huge dork.

"What else are you picking up?" she asked, responding to the first part of what he'd just said. "It's not eyeliner, is it?"

"It's not," Jim said, shaking his head. "Natalie wants a textbook on alien languages. So, I need to find a bookstore as well as a beauty shop. People are gonna really wonder what kind of life I lead."
