Third Floor Common Room, Thursday Afternoon

Topher wanted grilled cheese, but there weren't any spatulas in the kitchen.

He had options. He knew he had options. He could go out and get grilled cheese from Luke's or Mooby Land. He could order grilled cheese to be delivered, although that would take longer. He could go to another common room and look for spatulas there, which would require either ascending or descending stairs or spending an extended period of time waiting for the elevator.

Or he could just try not using a spatula, and seeing how that went.

Topher chose the last option.

What resulted was fairly painful for Topher's hands and not tremendously rewarding for his taste buds, because the sandwich wound up being fairly charred and the cheese didn't even melt properly. But the important part was the scientific takeaway from the whole experience: Spatulas were important.

And so were band-aids.

"And Scandinavia is... somewhere near France?" Geography? Not his strong point.

"I'm not really a belle of the ball, either," Joker admitted, waving a crutch for emphasis. "But I'll tell you this about getting through social situations: the best defense? is a good offense."

"It's... close enough to France." Elsa was going to just let that sit there. The next option was digging out a map and pointing out how close it was to the Southern Isles. "What do you mean, a good offense?"

She was really far more the 'avoid trouble in the first place' sort.

Well, really, EVERYTHING on the planet was 'close' if you took a shuttle. And why would you do anything else?

"Well, just... if you're shy, and worried people are going to make fun of you, go out and get in their faces and be friendly at them. At worst, it'll be more awkward for them to reject you, and at best you might make some new friends. Charm equals disarm."

"Charm equals disarm." That reminded Elsa, in a weird, backwards sort of way, of the mantra she had learned growing up. It was the spiritual opposite, really, of 'Conceal, don't feel.' It was... jarring. "I'm not entirely certain I have it in me to be quite that charming, I'm afraid."

Getting in people's faces meant getting close to people. Noooope.

"Well, there's another saying that goes 'fake it until you make it'..." Joker offered. "But hey, it's not for everyone."

"Fake... what? The charm?" Elsa was not looking any more certain of herself, here. "Does faking it involve getting into people's faces too?"

[identity profile] fly-so-serious.livejournal.com 2014-01-10 06:08 am (UTC)(link)
"No, fake... whatever it is you're trying to do. Pretend you already can, so that your fears can't get in the way, and you'll figure it out as you go along. Supposedly. More or less."

"Fake keeping to myself?" Elsa was smiling faintly again, switching tracks from uncertain right on over to gently teasing. "That ought to be easy enough, I suppose."

Still... it seemed like interesting advice to apply to other facets of her life.
