After a terrible day in class, Kathy just wanted to do nothing more than forget that today had ever happened. That, combined with the fiercest hunger pangs she'd ever had, had her limping down the hall to the common room on her floor, ordering more pizzas than she ever had in her life. And then some Chinese food. And a bit of Mexican to go along with, even though she had feelings about what they considered Mexican around here.

She also paid extra to have it all delivered upstairs because there was no way she could make it all the way downstairs and back up on her ankle.

The food arrived around the same time she found something watchable on TV; some anime that pitted giant robots with laser against tiny animals with magic that lived in bubbles. Or something. Look, it was very badly dubbed, which pretty much made it perfect.

By the time she'd watched the first three episodes, she'd inhaled three pizzas, two containers of lo mein, and four quesadillas. Not that she'd noticed that. With all the remaining food, it was hard to keep track!

"Jesus fuck," Sparkle whistled as he stepped into the common room, ever vigilant in his quest for free snacks. "Did I miss the party, or what?"

It kind of looked as though the ravenous hordes had already been through, plundered and pillaged what they could find, and then left, was the thing.

"What's on? Cartoons?" Jessica checked. She was slightly more focused on that than the giant variety of food at the moment.

"Ummm," Kathy looked down at her lap, where significant inroads had already been made in her fourth pizza. "Uhh...there's plenty to share?"

Way to dodge that question, Kathy! No one would ever guess what you were up to!

"Yup, some weird anime I've never seen before," Kathy said. "You're just in time for the girls in the magic schoolgirl uniforms to transform into a giant chihuahua and use their ultimate attack! They've been building up to it for the last episode and a half."

"No kidding?" Well, then Sparkle was going to help himself to a quesadilla, thank you much. And a container of kung pao chicken. "Don't mind if I do, then."

And with that in hand and contemplating stealing a slice of her pizza, he took a seat.

"So, looks like I might've jumped the gun a little when I nicknamed you Mouse, huh?"

"Why?" Kathy asked, shifting a little so he could get to the food without jostling her ankle, which was still resting on the table with ice on it. "I mean, I'm okay with that, but why?"

"Sounds legit. What kind of monster are they going to fight?" Jessica checked.

"Mice nibble. What's up with the whole..." Sparkle set his Chinese food down on the coffee table, and waved a hand at the assortment of food set out before them. "This is enough for the population of the dorms, like, twice over."

"Umm, they were fighting giant laser-robots earlier, but once the schoolgirls were introduced, I think the new big bad is some entity from beyond space and time. It kinda looks like a beholder, actually. All tentacles and a creepy red eye."

Which clearly meant this show was quality. K-W-ality.

Kathy didn't meet his eyes. "I was just hungry and couldn't figure out what I wanted to eat? Haven't you ever been that way before? So hungry everything sounds good?"

And then so hungry you ate four pizzas and everything else and were now reaching for a container of egg rolls and beef teriyaki?

"And a giant chihuahua is going to fight that?" Jessica checked. "I'm not sure this show is very realistic. Sorry to break it to you."

Kathy's jaw dropped. "Wait a minute," she demanded. "Wait just one darn minute. What part of this incredibly well-made and meticulously researched and translated anime are you doubting?"

"Mouse, I grew up that hungry."

He reached for the chicken again, shrugged, and started to dig in.

"Pretty sure I would've exploded or something by now, though."

Juuust saying.

"Cartoons? Shit, I didn't even notice those."

Because Sparkle's priorities leaned more in the direction of 'gonna stuff my face now.'

"Please tell me that monster is wearing a tutu."

"Chihuahuas don't have a high enough attack against beholders," Jessica said. "I actually don't know if that made any sense. I've never been into RPGs."

"Seems to be," Jessica said. "I'm not sure why. I assume it's just super stylish."

So long as he didn't directly address it, Kathy could keep pretending that she had no idea what he was talking about. Exploding? Okay, kind of a non-sequitur after his comment about being hungry, but she kinda figured Sparkle was like that.

Because those two statements obviously went together, rather than him addressing something else.

"Well, that's what happened to me tonight. I kinda figured I needed all the comfort food, you know?"

Seriously. All of it.

"Even chihuahuas that have their own blinged out diamond collars and over-sized sunglasses?" Kathy checked. "I think it's supposed to be a giant version of the purse-dog that gave the leader her magic powers. They're rockstar-supermodels during the day and fight off evil aliens by night."

Obviously.

"I played some online, but chihuahuas were never a playable summon, I don't think."

"Clearly you didn't find the right one," Jessica noted. "Why do the aliens only attack at night is what I'm wondering now. Just attack during the day when the girls are rockstar supermodeling it up. This is why evil never wins."

"Well, it's totally rocking it," Sparkle decided, leaning back into the sofa and contemplating what it was he was witnessing, here. "I'm probably never going to understand why cartoons do crazy stuff like that, though. Maybe just because they can?"

"Hey now, evil has a schedule to keep," Kathy pointed out, compelled to defend evil's honor. "I'm pretty sure evil is just trying to work its way through school, which is why it can only attack nights and weekends. Or maybe evil's on some kind of plan, and it's much cheaper to acquire minions and get permits and stuff after nine pm."

Sparkle's bitchface was an epic one, here.

"Okay... comfort from what, then?"

Seriously, Kathy. You were trying to dance around the topic at the master of dancing around the topic. You were going to have to try harder than that.

"I figure it's just to give the character a distinctive design so they can sell toys," Jessica said. "It's usually a safe bet that everything about cartoons is about selling toys."

"I was with you until you mentioned permits," Jessica said. "I refuse to believe that evil monsters are willing to deal with local building departments."

"I made an ass of myself in class," Kathy said stubbornly. "Fell down and started to cry. It was embarrassing."

Take that, Mr. Bitchface. Nothing weird about ordering a bit of comfort food when you were feeling down!
