5th Floor Common Room, Tuesday Night

After a terrible day in class, Kathy just wanted to do nothing more than forget that today had ever happened. That, combined with the fiercest hunger pangs she'd ever had, had her limping down the hall to the common room on her floor, ordering more pizzas than she ever had in her life. And then some Chinese food. And a bit of Mexican to go along with, even though she had feelings about what they considered Mexican around here.

She also paid extra to have it all delivered upstairs because there was no way she could make it all the way downstairs and back up on her ankle.

The food arrived around the same time she found something watchable on TV; some anime that pitted giant robots with laser against tiny animals with magic that lived in bubbles. Or something. Look, it was very badly dubbed, which pretty much made it perfect.

By the time she'd watched the first three episodes, she'd inhaled three pizzas, two containers of lo mein, and four quesadillas. Not that she'd noticed that. With all the remaining food, it was hard to keep track!

"Umm, they were fighting giant laser-robots earlier, but once the schoolgirls were introduced, I think the new big bad is some entity from beyond space and time. It kinda looks like a beholder, actually. All tentacles and a creepy red eye."

Which clearly meant this show was quality. K-W-ality.

"And a giant chihuahua is going to fight that?" Jessica checked. "I'm not sure this show is very realistic. Sorry to break it to you."

Kathy's jaw dropped. "Wait a minute," she demanded. "Wait just one darn minute. What part of this incredibly well-made and meticulously researched and translated anime are you doubting?"

"Chihuahuas don't have a high enough attack against beholders," Jessica said. "I actually don't know if that made any sense. I've never been into RPGs."

"Even chihuahuas that have their own blinged out diamond collars and over-sized sunglasses?" Kathy checked. "I think it's supposed to be a giant version of the purse-dog that gave the leader her magic powers. They're rockstar-supermodels during the day and fight off evil aliens by night."

Obviously.

"I played some online, but chihuahuas were never a playable summon, I don't think."

"Clearly you didn't find the right one," Jessica noted. "Why do the aliens only attack at night is what I'm wondering now. Just attack during the day when the girls are rockstar supermodeling it up. This is why evil never wins."

"Hey now, evil has a schedule to keep," Kathy pointed out, compelled to defend evil's honor. "I'm pretty sure evil is just trying to work its way through school, which is why it can only attack nights and weekends. Or maybe evil's on some kind of plan, and it's much cheaper to acquire minions and get permits and stuff after nine pm."

"I was with you until you mentioned permits," Jessica said. "I refuse to believe that evil monsters are willing to deal with local building departments."

"I meant evil permits," Kathy amended. "I mean, like, how embarrassing would it be if you showed up to create some mayhem at the mall only to discover that the slime things from outer space was already oozing its way through the stores? Awk~ward, you know?"

"Okay, I'll buy that. Especially since monsters usually don't like to hang out together. Too much bickering," Jessica said.

"And what's more evil than bureaucracy?" Kathy asked. "Reams and reams of paperwork, in triplicate, in blue or black ink only. Pretty sure it's best to stay on the...less evil side of that?"

"What would you think if I admitted that I kind of like doing paperwork?" Jessica checked.

Kathy gave the other girl her best approximation of a suspicious side-eye. "I'd probably wonder if you were evil. Just a little bit. Who's your favorite Mister?"

Look, we all had our different ways of assessing threat potential. Kathy's involved cheesy scifi shows.

"Sorry, I've never gotten into British scifi. I'm more of a Space Battles kind of girl," Jessica explained. "Was there one with a hat?"

"A bunch of them did," Kathy said. "Four had his fedora, Seven had his panama hat, Eleven had a fez. Okay, then, favorite movie of the Space Battles series?"

Trilogy, really. But if she answered one of of the second three, Kathy would know that she was dealing with pure evil here and could respond accordingly.

"The third one, but that's because I like the happy ending and I think people give the little bears a bad rap," Jessica said. "I mean, clearly they're badasses."

"Okay, no, that one is totally the best," Kathy said with a laugh. "They're so adorable with their dancing and then they managed to take out pretty much everyone. So, okay, you can't be evil."

She wiped her hand on a napkin and held it out. "I'm Kathy, by the way."

"Jessica. Glad to hear I check out," Jessica said.

"It was close," Kathy said solemnly. "Liking paperwork but not liking cheesy British scifi shows could have ended it, but I had a hunch you were decent people anyway."

"As far as I'm concerned, that means you have good intuition," Jessica said. "Or you're far too trusting and I'll be able to use that to further my evil schemes. I guess we'll find out which one in time."

"Can we just go with the first one?" Kathy suggested. "I'm not saying it's true, but it would make me feel better, at least until your sudden and inevitable betrayal."
