Sixth Floor of the Dorms, Saturday Night After Graduation

It was the night after graduation, and Topher had spent a chunk of this week experiencing what college life was going to be like. So, yes, there was a party happening.

New grads, their guests, and anyone who didn't make a big deal about being an underclassman (because let's face it, Topher didn't know who was in what grade) were all welcome to come upstairs and enjoy snacks, soda, and booze. Lots of booze.

Because who didn't want to celebrate this milestone on the way to adult life by jumping into a ball pit with their graduation cap still on? Topher sure did.

One last time!

Jessica stopped at her room to drop off her dirty robe, then another stop to the bathroom to wash the clay off her hands.

She was still wearing her mortarboard when she walked up to the sixth floor, though. She thought it was jaunty. "Hey, Co-Val. You survived."

"I sat under the podium," Topher agreed brightly. "You also survived. Not as surprising."

"It wasn't that bad. I've broken gnomes by accident before. Doing it on purpose was actually pretty simple," Jessica declared.

"You should consider a career as a bodyguard," Topher suggested. "You could protect innocent old people in the suburbs from their own lawn ornnaments."

"Not enough science in that job," Jessica said. "It would get boring fast."

"Yeah, true," he agreed, clucking his tongue. "What are your real plans, anyway? "

"It looks like I'll be here most of the summer, but I've got a job lined up with an outfit doing some government work," Jessica said. "In theory, we should be able to do some good."

Topher scrunched up his face as he thought about that. "That sounds boring, but I'm guessing it won't be?"

Based on Jessica and all.

"I can't say much about it, but no, it won't be boring at all," Jessica promised.

"Good," Topher said. "I can't talk about my job opportunity either, so we're the same."

Not true at all.

Parties were always a thing Jim loved so why not attend one tonight? Sure, he'd dealt with gross gnomes and his mom was around and so was Natalie but they'd understand.

After cleaning up and showering, he wandered in to enjoy the night and his official escape from high school.

Victor took a moment to debrief with Dr. Pym and boggle covertly at the Other Nico before putting n a fresh t-shirt and heading up to the sixth floor. A party seemed like an excellent way to end his high school career.

"Hey, V," Topher said, before wrinkling his nose when he realized that that might not be the best nickname. "So that was weird. I somehow thought valedictorians didn't have to fight like all the rest of the plebians."

"Sorry I couldn't protect you," Victor said, and almost meant it. "What did you do during the fighting, anyhow? I was busy with the bugs."

A pause. "Oh, and congrats on the valedictorian thing."

Billy had gotten rid of his robes, but he still had his cap when he came upstairs. "Is it bad to say I think the ceremony could have been worse?"

"Oh, it totally could have been," Topher agreed. "The gnomes could have been giant."

"Ugh, I didn't even think of that," Billy said, suddenly smiling. "I guess that's why I wasn't a valedictorian."

Someone was a little proud here.

There's a lot.

And as soon as he arrived, Jim beelined for the food. Because...food.

Bay needed sustenance after the battle against the gnomes. She went over to the guac and chips and started stress-eating her way through the entire pile.

Mmmm. Avocado-y.

Toby headed to the party. There was free food and apparently booze. More importantly, his sister was there and safe from gnomes. "So are all graduations here that intense?"

"Probably, but I'm not sure," Bay admitted, reluctantly turning away from the guacamole to give him a hug. "I skipped it last year. Did you see me with the bug spray?"

Now that it was over, it was easy to laugh about.

"Hey, you gotta go with what works," Toby told her, returning the hug. "And congratulations, by the way. You did it!"

He was in proud mode right now.

"I did," Bay agreed. "And since this grad is so crazy early, I beat Daphne by, like, a month."

She knew it wasn't a competition, but some tiny irrational part of her was proud to be first anyhow.

"How are you? Were you okay when the gnomes and the bugs and the craziness started?"

"Something to be proud of," Toby added with a nod. It really wasn't a competition, but he understood why that was a thing for Bay.

But there were more pressing issues to discuss. Like bugs and gnomes.

"I was worried about you more than anything. I can't say I've ever seen anything like that."

"Yeah, it's not really the kind of thing we get back home," Bay said sheepishly. "So, now you know why I've kind of changed the subject every time you guys asked how school was. Sometimes here are just too strange to believe."

"I really get it now," Toby replied. "And I don't have to tell Mom and Dad or Regina or Daphne or anyone about this if you don't want me to. I can save you from endless questions."

Toby was more laid back about things. He saw what happened. He didn't need more than that.

"Aww, my hero," Bay said fondly. "Thanks. I was kind of bummed they couldn't make it, but now my life will be so much easier if we just maybe don't mention the attacking garden gnomes."

"Well, if it makes you feel a little better, Mom threatened hellfire if I didn't take pictures and video of absolutely everything." Maybe that was an exaggeration, but only slightly.

"I can erase the part with the gnomes."

"Yeah, maybe just say your camera was acting funny," Bay nodded. "Probably for the best."

She added, "So speaking of Mom, do you know what her new book is about? She doesn't want to tell me."

Toby wasn't sure how much Bay knew about the problems their parents had been having, and how the book was partially at the center of it. Since things worked out, he didn't think her big day needed to be ruined by that news. She'd learn about it soon enough, he figured.

The subject of the book was another matter, one he really didn't want to talk about for reasons. "Something about old stories from dad's days in baseball. And you really should talk to Mom about it."

Bay looked suspicious, like she could tell Toby was leaving something out, but she was still too happy from graduation to call him on it.

"Baseball stories," she said instead, dismissively. "Wow, that's not where I expected her to go. Sounds like my personal cure for insomnia."

"It's unexpected alright," Toby said, slightly amused. "Maybe someday you can write a book called When Gnomes Attack. Or at least illustrate it."

"Sure, and then you can turn it into a concept album," Bay smiled back at him. "We'd make gnomes the next cool trend."

"If anyone could do it, it'd be us," Toby replied with a firm nod.
