Hearing Kitty casually announce that Four's mother was on the island this week?

Cue a slight breakdown for Four.

...okay, a major breakdown, because as far as he knew, his mother had died when he was young.

Thus shooting things at at the range because violence was cathartic.

After a fruitless search for Tobias at the brunch, Evelyn began exploring the campus.

She was eventually drawn to the gunfire.

"I suppose Abnegation was as poor a fit for you as it was for me," she commented when he finally took a break to reload.

Four put the weapon down. His hands were shaking too much to hold it.

"You're dead."

"Is that what he told you?" Evelyn said. "Clearly, I'm not dead."

Four clenched his hands into fists. "So you left me behind? With him. With what he does."

Evelyn bit her lower lip. "Well, yes. I'm sorry about that."

Four slapped a new clip of ammunition into his weapon and turned his back on his mother. "Didn't do me a lot of good," he said, firing dead-center into the target.

"I'm here now," Evelyn offered quietly.

The only thing keeping Four from doing something stupid was the weapons safety lectures that had been drilled into his head.

"I never asked you to be!" he yelled, slapping the now-empty weapon down. "Go back to wherever you've been hiding yourself--" he glanced at her clothing that were clearly not part of any of the Factions, "--the Factionless, I assume...and stay there. Don't contact me again."

"If that's what you want, Tobias," Evelyn said, stepping away.

Four didn't even watch her leave. He reloaded and fired the entire clip into the target.

And repeat.

And repeat.

And repeat.
