The Deck, Tuesday Morning

Even after sleeping on it, Anders didn't feel much better about what had happened in Edge. They'd put so much work into the water filtration system -- only to see it wrecked in what was most likely a matter of hours. And even though they'd fixed the immediate issues, he knew nothing would stop the same people from coming back and keeping water away from the thirsty. Again.

It made a man angry, was all.

Kittens, on the other hand, made a man happy. And if Anders couldn't stop brooding, he could at least get out of his room. Carrying Lachlan in one oversized pocket, he took his breakfast onto the porch and set the cat down. The tuxedo kitten snapped at shadows and tried to catch every insect that happened by -- mostly unsuccessfully -- while Anders sipped at his tea.

"Hi there," Anders agreed, equally quiet but with a smile. "You're out early."

"Or out late," he joked, stepping up onto the deck. "I slept in the preserve so I'm just coming back. Couldn't stay out there any longer without food, you know."

"You aren't foraging for berries and tree bark?" Anders joked in return, then gestured at his muffin. "You can have some of mine, if you like. Or there's a box of them upstairs."

"Tree bark isn't very good, if you can believe it," Nathan joked, taking a seat. "What kind of muffin is it?"

"There go my dinner plans," Anders said, picking at the muffin a little as if checking for an answer. "I think it's blueberry. Or at least, they're blue and they're berries. Fruits here still confuse me."

Especially super-complicated ones like blueberries, yes.

"It's good, either way."

"Maybe in a bit, I'll have a piece," Nathan decided, stretching his legs out. "What's brought you out so early in the morning?"

"Didn't sleep well," Anders admitted. "You know how sometimes you wake up thinking about something, and you can't stop, so there's no way to fall asleep again? I figured Lachlan might as well get a little sun if I was going to be up anyhow."

"Is everything all right?" Nathan asked, frowning. "Is it Karl?"

"Oh, no, he's fine as far as I know," Anders rushed to reassure him. "As fine as a prisoner can be, anyhow."

That was a rather major caveat, but it was the best he could do.

"It's just that class yesterday bothered me. We spent over a month building water processing equipment in Edge and someone stole it over break. Wrecked it. Nothing left at all." He sighed. "Sometimes it's hard not to hate people."

"Oh." Nathan frowned and wrung his hands together a bit. "Do you guys have any idea who it might have been or was it just stupid bloody vandalism? Is there no chance of getting it back?"

"Stupid bloody vandalism," Anders confirmed. "They probably took the metal to sell, so I suppose it did them some good. Just not anyone else."

He ran a hand through his hair. "Honestly, it might have been almost anyone. There are too many people with too little there."

"I'm sorry," Nathan said, shaking his head. "I wish there was more I could do than just say those words. What happens for you and Edge now?"

"We cleaned it up yesterday, and I guess next week we go back and start over," Anders said. "Maybe put up a fence or something."

He wasn't sure a fence alone would do anything but make people steal the fence, but it was the best he had.

"Professor Reno got turned into a bird so he didn't have to see it, the lucky bastard."

Nathan snickered though he tried to cover that up by putting a hand over his mouth. It was funny but the previous subject matter made him realize it might not be a great move.

"Good thing you didn't bring your kitten to class with you, then," he remarked. "There might have been even more chaos."

"Oh, that'd be brilliant," Anders said, mood easily swinging away from the negative as it sometimes did. "Probably you get bad marks if your pet attacks the teacher, too. At the least it's not good form."

"You could use the excuse of wanting to make sure your teacher didn't get too lazy while he was a bird?" he tried. "You were contributing to his physical health."

Anders laughed. "Now I'm sad I didn't bring Lachlan to class," he said. "I could have done Reno a favor, and he missed out."

"Maybe there'll be a next time?" Nathan said hopefully. "If not, maybe someone else will turn into a bird and you can send the kitten after them."

He paused.

"If I turn into a bird, you're welcome to do that. But, I hope I don't turn into anything."

"Thanks, but I hope you don't too," Anders informed him. "And especially not anything Lachlan would see as food. Having to rescue you from my cat would probably be traumatic for both of us."

"It'd be a little strange," Nathan said and then decided to segue that into something else. "Speaking of strange, have you heard of this...Homecoming Dance thing?"

"I saw the signs about it," Anders said, looking a bit confused by the segue. "Couldn't figure out what it had to do with me, so I ignored it. Why, do people turn into animals there?"

He wouldn't put it past Fandom, honestly.

"No no, it's just a strange custom, apparently," Nathan said, shaking his head. "It's like a party but with more...glitter, I think the girl who I talked to said. And you dress up and there's dancing."

"Oh," Anders said, frowning a bit as he thought it over. "I don't understand what glitter has to do with the rest of it, but that sounds sort of fun. Were you going to go?"

"I thought about it," Nathan answered, sounding a little shy. "But, I think I'd feel better about it if we could go together? If you want, of course. I didn't want to assume but it might be fun?"

"Sure, of course," Anders said in an instant, and then chewed his thumbnail. "Wait, together or together, together?"

There were hand motions that went with that and possibly illuminated the question not at all. He preferred together-together, but he also didn't want to assume.
