Gym, Thursday After Classes

A notice had been sent out to the student body informing them that, if they wanted to be in the Homecoming parade, they should meet in the gym to rehearse and assemble the floats.

Alana was the lucky StuCo representative who got to lug paper mache, crepe paper, chicken wire, and other float supplies to the gym for the meeting. (And glitter. So much glitter.) She got stuff vaguely organized around a central open space, then set to work bending the chicken wire. A paper mache gremlin seemed like the kind of thing that belonged in the parade.

Gwen had Ideas on this whole thing, and had totally brought the pieces she'd worked on with her, setting them up in her little section. And then she went to get one of whatever drinks there were, because she was not planning to get up once she'd started working.

For making floats, rehearsing parade acts, and discussing how a parade on an island made of stairs is going to work.

Gwen sat surrounded in her little area surrounded by chicken wire and tissue paper. And, okay, she was also working on her version of a gremlin, but a) she only had the school mascot to go by on what one looked like, and b) there was a lot of black paper involved here.

Also she didn't really have art skills, oh well.

Alana squinted at Gwen's work, then moved over to join her. "Want to work together?" she asked. "Mine is sort of a conceptual gremlin."

As in, the concept was a gremlin. The reality looked more like a soggy koala bear.

"What's a conceptual gremlin?" Gwen wondered.

Alana sighed. "See, it was going to be a gremlin," she explained, waving a hand at the tangle of chicken wire. "But it turns out sculpting a gremlin is really hard when you suck at art."

"Okay, me too!" Gwen said. "Also I've only ever seen the logo? But mine was going to be kind of Goth so I figured if I screwed up she'd just be Different."

Yep, Gwen was attempting a Hot Topic gremlin.

"The little loops of wire could be piercings," Alana suggested helpfully. "And I might totally steal that idea. Or else make mine a gremlin dressed up like a monster for Halloween."

"That is brilliant," Gwen said, and meant it. "Hide our chickenwire deformities. ...What if everyone makes gremlins?"

"Then we have a parade with a theme?" Alana offered.

"Like a pumpkin decorating contest, but with floats," Gwen said. "Not sure that analogy worked..."

"I think it worked okay," Alana said. "But I've never been in a pumpkin-decorating contest, so..."

"I had to do it in like fourth grade. It was a lot of time gluing felt and those fuzzy pompom things that fell off before you had to have them in. Pumpkins are overrated," Gwen said. "Gremlins, though, we're making them cool."

"Obviously," Alana smiled. "It'll be like a trend. All the cool schols will get gremlin mascots."

"Posers," Gwen tsked.

"They'll all still know we did it first and best," Alana decided.

"Hey, we're the ones who risk making idiots out of ourselves with gremlin venom," Gwen said. "We're all automatically hardcore badasses just going here."

"We are, but I still want to keep this gremlin-free streak going," Alana said. "Seriously, if one bit me,I'd -- I don't know. Bite it back."

"You'd be the biggest badass for that," Gwen said. "But I don't want to know what happens if you do that."

"Probably I spend, like, a week walking around thinking I'm a zombie," Alana speculated. "But it'd be worth it."

Also, I forgot to say it above but you can totally march in the parade even if you don't ping in today. EVERYONE IS WELCOME.
