fourth floor common room: wednesday morning

It felt like it'd been awhile since Nathan had cooked anything. It hadn't since he regularly did it but that was often over an open flame in the preserve. Today, he'd stopped into the common room and ended up in the small kitchen.

There wasn't a lot to choose from and he didn't have any handily available recipes but he figured he could make due. So, he went to work on some egg and bacon sandwiches. There was always plenty of eggs, pork and bread around so it would easily serve himself and anyone else.

The television was on to provide background noise but Nathan wasn't really paying that much attention to it. Every so often, something would catch his attention but he was mostly making sure he didn't ruin breakfast.

"Such confidence," Nathan said, snickering a little. "Now, I'm gonna be staring at my feet when I walk. And end up running into walls."

"And then end up black and blue anyhow, though at least you wouldn't be in a pit," Anders supplied. "So I guess it's the lesser evil."

"So, you think I should walk into walls and doors?" he teased, reaching for some eggs. "You better keep ice on hand, then. Even if my healing would take care of it. Ice would still be nice."

"Maybe just stay in one place," Anders teased in return. "I can't just follow you around with ice all the time, you know. I'm far too busy."

"Far too busy, huh?" Nathan chuckled. "Is your cat keeping you very, very tied up?"

"You wouldn't believe how demanding Lachlan can be," Anders informed him. "It's like having a small, furry toddler who never says thank you."

"And you absolutely love that, don't you?" Nathan asked, sounding amused.

"Everything else might change but a cat is going to be a cat," Anders said. "It's good to have a reliable source of disdain around. Especially one who sleeps on my feet at night."

"He sounds like a good companion," Nathan noted. "Quiet, independent and willing to make sure your feet are warm. Perfect."

"I do seem to like quiet, independent types these days," Anders allowed. "The body warmth is just a bonus."

Nathan laughed shyly and ducked his head. He covered that by dumping the bacon on a plate and finishing up with the eggs.

"I don't know if I'd be as comfortably laying on your feet as a cat would be."

"We could always try, but probably not," Anders agreed. "I'd kick and it would be all scrunchy."

He stacked the toast on a plate and set it by the bacon.

"You'd kick, I'd get angry and go sleep on the floor somewhere," Nathan added with a small snicker. "The morning wouldn't be a good one."

[Sorry for the slow. Got waylaid by a stomach ache.]

"Which is why it's nice that the last few times we've tried that, you've stayed next to me," Anders added neatly. "Much less kicking and much better mornings that way."

[OOC: No worries, just feel better![]

"Yes," Nathan agreed with a slight nod. "Plus, I don't know if I'd even fit on the foot of the bed. I think my feet, at least, would dangle."

He shook his head.

"Anyway, I'm not a cat so I won't be doing that. The other two things, those I can do."

"And you can make breakfast," Anders pointed out. "Where Lachlan wants me to get him breakfast. So you're better to have around in a couple ways."

"Thank you," he said, piling an egg and some bacon onto the plate. "How's the bread looking? Ready to serve?"

"It's toast," Anders confirmed, indicating the plate. "I didn't butter it because I wasn't sure what you had in mind."

"Personal preference," he said, shrugging. "I don't but you can. Maybe the food will take your mind off the weird feelings?"

"You already took my mind off it," Anders told him -- and applied a thick coat of butter to the toast destined for his sandwich, as that was his personal preference.

Once he'd done that and added bacon, though, his mind circled back.

"It is strange, though. I'd never say I missed the Circle, but right now it'd be nice to have a Senior Enchanter to check in with. I'm not even sure who to talk to here."

"Do any teachers do magic?" he asked. "Or something similar? None of mine do."

"I don't think so," Anders said thoughtfully. "There's something about Professor Atreides but I don't know if it's actual powers."

Nathan put his egg and bacon on his toasted bread while he thought about it. "If I had any contact back home, I'd ask but if I tried that, it'd be dangerous. Maybe it's nothing?"

Was it ever nothing here?

"By the time I got word home, it'll probably be over anyhow," Anders said, shaking his head. "If it was even safe. I think all we can do is hope it's nothing."

"Here's hoping," he said, taking a bite. "And if things start to go bad...just be safe if you go out there."

"Done," Anders promised firmly. "I wouldn't go out without back-up unless I had to, anyhow. I like being alive."

"I like that too," he said, nodding. "And I'd like you to stay that way for a long while, if you could."
