2nd Floor Common Room, Saturday Morning

Thorin had not woken up to the sound of hundreds of dwarves breaking camp. That had been the first tiny hint that things were not as they had been when he'd fallen asleep last night. The second hint was that the ridiculous 'roomba' that he'd had years ago had attacked his foot as he escaped the room he had been given.

Yeah, that had factored in.

He was definitely back at that school and away from his people until the island felt it well and good to release him. How lovely.

For now he was going to enjoy a cup of coffee with only a little lot of guilt over having such a luxury right now.

"Because --"

The thing was, it was a good question, and it deserved a real answer. That threw Alana off her game.

"Because I do," she shrugged. "I didn't forget who you were, the way I did half the people here. I mean, I don't care in the way I care what somebody like Celia or Johnny is doing, but I care." Rueful look. "Or I did, anyhow."

It wasn't like she was going to beg for details.

"Aww, that's sweet, you didn't forget me," Ronan said, sounding amused. "I barely remembered this place once I got away. It wasn't where I wanted to be. Suffice it to say, I went back home and found my niche."

"I'm a sweet person," Alana informed him. "And hey, if you have a niche, you're ahead of me. I was a soldier, then an actress, and lately ... lately I've mostly been a mom."

She was leaving out a few details. I spent a decade on the run because I fell for the wrong guy didn't quite strike her as reunion small talk.

"Sounds like a fun filled time," he replied with a shake of his head. "You end up in a war too? Thorin here did."

"Yeah, I knew that was going to happen even when I was here," Alana sighed. "It's one of those fun long wars where everybody fights, and nobody wins, and nobody can even really tell you what it's about anymore."

She smiled apologetically. "I wasn't that good a soldier. But I met my ex during the war, so I figure I'm one of the few to get anything out of it."

"So, this war's still going on?" he guessed. "Gives people something to bitch about, I guess."

"Yep, and probably it'll still be going when I'm an old lady," Alana said, resigned. "I'm done caring about it."

Well, unless Hazel were to get drafted too, but somehow she doubted that would happen.

She glanced over to Thorin. "I hope he at least won his."
