The Deck; Friday Evening
Jasper had smashed his cell phone a few days ago. It'd been worth it. After seeing his inbox flush with messages from Doug Weathers, he'd gotten sick of it and just smashed it with the heel of his shoe. No regrets. Melissa and Howie could contact him other ways. He didn't need a phone, didn't care to have a phone. He didn't want anyone to come a knocking.
The quiet was why Jasper was outside on the deck this evening. The sun was just starting to set, making it feel slightly cooler though it was still hot. Jasper was used to it though. Southern summers were famous for two things: heat and humidity. He'd grown up around them and knew them well.
Hot summer nights are my favorite, Jasper. He could hear his father lengthening the word 'favorite', making it several syllables longer than it needed to be. Makes you feel like you've worked really hard. You ever sawed through a --
Jasper cut that thought off, shoved it behind a door in his mind. He'd brought a bottle of water outside with him and was using it to keep cool. His long legs were stretched out in front of him, one arm tucked up behind his head and his eyes were closed.
It was so easy to imagine himself back home, back in his grandma's house, sitting on the porch while she railed incoherently inside. But here, it was just quiet. Jasper sighed.
He hoped his grandmother hadn't burned the house down.

Look, his people were made to weather the heat of the forge without complaint. This shit got nothing on him.
"Ah. Are you well?" Because he had no clue what to do with an ill man. No clue. Maybe give them water and hope they didn't die? Would that work?

Nice thought, right?

But then you'd have to be short. So, it was really a trade off here.
"That would explain why so few people are about," Thorin replied with an annoyed little sniff.

He took a long look at Thorin. "It might help you out, you know."

But he was frowning down at his clothing now.

"My people do not react as yours do to the heat."

Instead, he arched an eyebrow and sat up. It gave him the opportunity to look a little more critically at Thorin. "Really? I always thought they were..."
He trailed off, holding his hand up maybe a foot above the deck.

Very tall. Almost freakishly so. Because he had to be one of the hot dwarves.
"But no. We are not the size of a chicken. Stout though we may be."
no subject
"And here I just thought you were short for a guy," Jasper admitted, shrugging. "Turns out I have that backwards. Sort of."

He wasn't Tumblr savvy.

"I would not be opposed to that."

Also gold-madness, but pssh.

Billy would say he was doing that to use it against them later. Jasper refused to entertain that idea.
"Civil war ever a problem?"

Get your shit together, Tolkien.

Boogeyman dwarf?

And other reasons Thorin didn't know.
no subject
Oh, if only Thorin knew.

And this was why Thorin wasn't allowed on Tumblr. It would end in tears.

"No more than an elf. Or a halfling."
They were called hobbits, Thorin. Don't be a dick about that.

no subject
Oh, Thorin. Thorin, no.

Space, storybooks, seas, other universes, all that. Jasper was from the south. His claim to fame was darker and a little more violent. Not worth thinking about.

Also, he'd marry a princess or something.
no subject
He had it bad but not that bad.
