So. Merrill had discovered the roof, and more relevant to her interests, the rooftop garden. This had been entirely by accident, as she'd been trying to get from her dorm room to the preserve at the time, and don't ask how exactly point A led to point C by way of missing point B because she'd been a little too lost in her thoughts at the time and certainly wouldn't be able to tell you. It was fine, though, since tending the spiky little plants was a job that appealed to her. It'd worked out well as far as she was concerned.

Having finished with that, she settled down near the edge of the roof, not too far away from the garden. It wasn't the same as being out in the preserve, but still quieter up here than in the dorms.

Somehow, at some point in the last week or so and equally by accident, she had also managed to find the library -- that accounted for the small stack of books beside her. They were all supposed to pertain to elven history, but whether she'd find anything useful in them was entirely up in the air -- so far none of them seemed to be the elven history of her world. She was determined to go through all of them thoroughly, though, and then when she was done she'd turn them in and check out a few more, and so on.

Safe to say that, ever since she'd met that Witch of the Wilds at the party a few weekends back, she was just a little tiny bit obsessed with the idea of finding and restoring an eluvian. It was her duty to preserve and recover what she could of the elves' lost culture, and this? This would definitely count.

Oh, look, the garden just got even more precious.

"Merrill!" Isabela cheerfully called out as she made her way over to her. "It's the first time I've been up here. In any case, I'm not much of a gardener."

"I've never heard of a gardener who was a pirate, too," Merrill said thoughtfully. "Can you even have a garden on a ship? Little flowerpots on the railing, maybe?"

No, Merrill.

"I only just found out you could even get up here," she went on, and waved an arm out at the island. "But you can see everything!"

"You could balance them there, kitten, but they'd fall off during the next rough wave," Isabela told her. "Not to mention sea air's good for people, but not for most plants."

She sat down next to Merrill. "It is quite a view though."

"Oh, that's true. It's salty, isn't it?" Which made sense, but Merrill couldn't help looking a touch disappointed. "I'd forgotten we were surrounded by water here. I'm not used to that, not like you are."

"Very salty. You'd need plants from along the coastline," Isabela suggested. Because Merrill looking disappointed was terrible. "And for all it's coasts, there's plenty of places in Rivain that are aren't close to the sea. I haven't always been a pirate, you know."

Technically she'd already spent more time studenting than actual pirating.

Pfft, details. Who needed those?

"Why did you decide to become a pirate?" asked Merrill, with a curious tilt of her head. "Was it the ship? It's a nice ship, I can see how it would be tempting."

She was going to be so sad about its eventual fate.

Details just got in the way, like when you were searching for a relic that might also happen to be an important cultural artefact of some kind.

"It was the ship," Isabela confirmed. "I looked at her and it was love at first sight." The only kind of love she was going to let herself admit to for quite some time.

Or needed to accomplish something and didn't have a way to do it except one that involved a form of magic that tended to drastically increase the chances of demon possession! Details were inconvenient.

"I can see why. I'd almost be tempted myself," Merrill told her, bouncing a little bit. "But you can't really go anywhere until you get a crew together, can you."

Details like those were likely to drive ~~Aveline~~ one to drink, so best to avoid them really.

"Much as it pains me to admit, she'd too much ship for one woman to handle," Isabela said, nodding. "But once I have that crew I'd be happy to give you a ride anywhere you can sail."

She'd offer to let her join said crew, but even without having time to get jaded to the downsides, she could tell that Merrill was on the top of the list of people who shouldn't be pirates.

Merrill would be the worst pirate ever, and not in the bizarrely complimentary sense.

"Oh, I'd like that," she said happily. "I'd miss the land too much to stay away very long, I think, but it would be nice just to take a little trip. Someday. But tell me how your classes are! What else are you taking?"

Besides Ethics. Which was hilarious, considering they were both in it.

Hey, Isabela was very ethi-yeah, she couldn't even finish that.

"There's the sex class, which is very...educational." Poor Clint, it was probably for the best that Merrill wasn't in that one. "And the one about how this place is supposed to work with the two hot teachers, also one where the teacher oddly concerned about setting things on fire."

"Oh, well, setting things on fire can get messy, especially if you spend a lot of time living in the forest," Merrill said, nodding. Also stating the fairly obvious.

". . . oooh, do you think the ethics teachers are going to kiss?" Abrupt change of subject, yes, but she'd argue it was a compelling subject. "It'd be very pretty if they did."

This new interest in gossip was entirely your influence, Isabela.

It was hardly the worst way she could have influenced her, on fact it was probably the best.

"I do hope so," she said. Also the hot blonde teachers while she was wishing for pretty things. "In fact, even if they don't oblige us, we can write about what would happen if they did."

Isabela, no.

"You mean --" Merrill perked up, clearly intrigued by this concept. "Make up your own stories about them? I'd like to read those."

In a continuation of what would be a narrative theme for years: Merrill, no.

"Why not? People have to get ideas for stories somewhere, and this seems as good a way as just making something up," Isabela said. This was possibly one of the best ideas she'd ever had. "Kitten, anything I get done, you'll be one of the first to read."

Isabela. No.

"No" was never going to dissuade any of these people from a terrible idea.

"Really?" Merrill almost bounced a little bit. "Oh, this is exciting. Do you think you'll make them go on some kind of adventure, or will it just be about kissing?"

For starters, at least.

And Aveline was going to spend so much effort making that 'DON'T' sign, too.

"An adventure will give them an excuse to start kissing." Isabela was aware that not everyone saw someone pretty and decided to try their luck. "There they are, one's repressing their feelings, the other's stoically pining, then there's some kind of peril or the other, and wham, kissing and feelings all over the place."
