So. Merrill had discovered the roof, and more relevant to her interests, the rooftop garden. This had been entirely by accident, as she'd been trying to get from her dorm room to the preserve at the time, and don't ask how exactly point A led to point C by way of missing point B because she'd been a little too lost in her thoughts at the time and certainly wouldn't be able to tell you. It was fine, though, since tending the spiky little plants was a job that appealed to her. It'd worked out well as far as she was concerned.

Having finished with that, she settled down near the edge of the roof, not too far away from the garden. It wasn't the same as being out in the preserve, but still quieter up here than in the dorms.

Somehow, at some point in the last week or so and equally by accident, she had also managed to find the library -- that accounted for the small stack of books beside her. They were all supposed to pertain to elven history, but whether she'd find anything useful in them was entirely up in the air -- so far none of them seemed to be the elven history of her world. She was determined to go through all of them thoroughly, though, and then when she was done she'd turn them in and check out a few more, and so on.

Safe to say that, ever since she'd met that Witch of the Wilds at the party a few weekends back, she was just a little tiny bit obsessed with the idea of finding and restoring an eluvian. It was her duty to preserve and recover what she could of the elves' lost culture, and this? This would definitely count.

Ringo glanced down at Merrill's stack of books again. "Do you spend a lot of your time reading?" she asked, wondering if that was what kept the other girl from the beach.

"Only since I found the library," Merrill admitted, and glanced somewhat abashedly at the stack of books. "Is that strange? It probably is . . ."

"Why would it be strange?" Ringo asked with an easy grin. She did a slow pirouette on one foot, just taking in the view from the roof. "I mean, lots of people like books, right?"

Merrill blinked a few times, rapidly. ". . . there are a lot of them here, aren't there? In the library? We don't have very many among my people. Books, that is."

"Oh." Ringo suppressed the easy chuckle that had started to bubble up. "I guess, if that's the case, then a library is pretty impressive, huh?"

"I mean, it's impressive anyway, with all the books. But especially if you've never seen one."

"I wonder what the libraries in Arlathan must have been like?" Merrill murmured, mostly to herself, a distant look in her eyes, and it took a moment before she seemed to remember she was having a conversation with someone. "Are there many where you're from?"

"Libraries? In Tokyo?" Ringo nodded. "I mean, I've never spent a ton of time in them, but they're all over the place. And bookstores, too."

"So Tokyo's a city, then," Merrill guessed. (Not that she was likely to retain this information. If it wasn't small, fuzzy, and adorable, odds were not good that she'd remember.) "Did you like it there?"

"Oh, yes." Ringo grinned, eyes whining. "I love Tokyo. It's huge and bright and there are people everywhere you look. There's so much energy, you know?"

Merrill's smile was apologetic. "I've never lived in a city. It seems like it would be awfully busy there. My people tend to look down on the city elves, but it seems like it would be an exciting place to be."

"It is!" Ringo agreed. "Though," she added, expression turning thoughtful, "if you're used to things being more peaceful, it might not be the most fun?"

"It sounds exciting! I think I could get used to it after a while. If I had to," Merrill added, and now she was frowning slightly; she was content to stay with her clan, or at least she thought she was. "Maybe a long while."

Probably the rampant fun with electric lighting would be a shock.

Ringo laughed. "Well, maybe you can visit sometime? Or some other big city. I hear that New York is impressive, too, and that's not too far from here?" It was in America, at least!

"Is --" Merrill hesitated; she seemed to be aware that this was probably a dumb-sounding question. "Is everyone there human?"

Ringo gave that question a few seconds of consideration, wondering if she knew anyone who didn't count. Ultimately, though, she nodded. "Yeah, they are. Actually I don't even know if there are any people who aren't human back home."
