5th Floor Common Room, Monday Afternoon

Kathy had been responsible all morning, finishing up the last of her college applications before running off to class. So it wasn't until she got home and logged onto the net that she finally saw the news.

Oh. Oh damn.

There seemed to really be only one thing to do, once she'd gotten past the point of just staring at the screen and willing them to take it all back and declare it to be some kind of weird, tasteless, internet joke. And that was head to the common room and watch the fantasy movie he'd made what, thirty years ago now? Sure, as she'd grown up, she'd started listening to his real music; started appreciating his other roles, both on screen and on stage. But this flick, silly as it was (with a glitter budget almost the size of StuCo's), it was where it had all began.

Huh. According to the back of her DVD, the movie had had supposedly been inspired by "true events". Funny how she'd never noticed that before.

[Because method RP helps? Or something?]

Hanna was quiet a moment, then nodded. "I had violence, and training in violence, before the island. I have been here a year. Almost exactly." She studied Laura back, wondering about what kind of violence it had been. "There are students here from wars. From places with terrible conditions. Or just terrible families." She bit her lip, and said, "Wait. A few weeks. See if you can adjust. This is my suggestion. It became easier for me?"

"I can tell. There is something about the way you move." Not as terribly obvious as it was a year ago, most likely, but it was still there. Similar to the way Kathy moved but more... raw, perhaps? It was difficult to put in words. "Okay, I will." She wouldn't get any more optimistic... but she had nowhere else to be anyway.

And then, because she was curious. "What kind of training you received?"

[identity profile] hexentotchen.livejournal.com 2016-01-13 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
"My father trained me. Weapons. Hunting. Survival. Infiltration." You know, the usual. "Mostly in the wilderness, Finland. To protect myself, in case... well. In case some people found us, from his past." And her own, but that was a complex thing to get into. "You?"

[identity profile] ungue.livejournal.com 2016-01-14 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
"Your father." That was unexpected to hear. It sounded like he did it out of care, though.

"Me... something like that. It was oriented at black ops, though." And her mother was involved, but hmm.

[identity profile] hexentotchen.livejournal.com 2016-01-14 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
"Well. Not biological. But he was my father." Hanna's voice was tinged with sadness there. "He died a year ago." No surprise that coincided with her arrival in Fandom, really. "He wanted to keep me out of the hands of people who would use me... like your people, I am thinking." Hanna winced, looking down at her hands. "You left them?"

[identity profile] ungue.livejournal.com 2016-01-14 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
Laura understood, and didn't mention it. "I... made sure they would not be able to use me anymore. Or anyone else."

She knew Hanna would understand.

[identity profile] hexentotchen.livejournal.com 2016-01-14 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Hanna looked up immediately. "Good." Other people might not understand. But Hanna understood perfectly. She paused, then admitted, "The same, for me." Then she smiled a tiny bit. "No one has found me here."

[identity profile] ungue.livejournal.com 2016-01-14 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
At least, someone who understood. Laura was starting to feel like a weirdo, even more than usual. "Good," she repeated. Sometimes there was no nice way out of a situation. "It is why I came, ultimately. I needed time to think."

[identity profile] hexentotchen.livejournal.com 2016-01-14 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
"Mmm." Hanna nodded. "It is not a bad place for that. Violent, sometimes. Strange. But, people here, the teachers, wish to protect us."

It went without saying that they didn't need it, but at least they were not threats.

"I am saving money, and learning all I can. I do not know what I wish to do, but they do not make you leave until you have finished school. I have another year and a half."

[identity profile] ungue.livejournal.com 2016-01-14 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
She had heard about the invasions, the weird shifts of reality or whatever. It was weird, but it might as well prove an outlet.

"I do not need to learn... at least not what a traditional school would teach. This is not a traditional school." But she already knew some things anyway. "I think I have around that time, too." Which was nice, since she knew Kathy would probably leave not before long. She didn't want to end up alone just because she couldn't talk to people.

"I plan to return to my world, I have... responsibilities there."

[identity profile] hexentotchen.livejournal.com 2016-01-14 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Hanna tilted her head, intrigued. "Responsibilities? To what?"

[identity profile] ungue.livejournal.com 2016-01-14 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
Laura shifted uncomfortably. "I want to do good. There are more people like the ones that made me what I am out there." That, and... "And there are things I need to find out about myself."

[identity profile] hexentotchen.livejournal.com 2016-01-14 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
"That is... understandable." For Hanna, the only thing left were literal dead-ends; and no reason for it to really matter, as the only survivor of the project. "I hope you can find what you need to know..." She paused, considering, then offered, "I talked to Professor-- to Jonothan Starsmore, when he was teaching here, about this. He runs the record store now. He knows doctors who can be discreet. And will not ask for much testing."

[identity profile] ungue.livejournal.com 2016-01-14 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
"I do not need doctors." She was kind of put off by doctors, to be honest. Besides, a doctor couldn't possibly tell her if she had a soul or not. "I am like Mr. Starsmore. A mutant. I have a healing factor." And how had it been abused. "My concerns are more... personal."

[identity profile] hexentotchen.livejournal.com 2016-01-14 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
"Ohhh." There, Hanna could only nod. Her own mother and grandmother were dead; her adoptive father dead; any other information, lost. "I think I am jealous, a little." She smiled slightly. "To have personal concerns, it makes you more-- there? Real."

[identity profile] ungue.livejournal.com 2016-01-14 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
"Do not be." Laura sighed. "If you knew more about me you would be glad of what you had. What you have." a father, a real one, that loved her. No attachments to her old life. Freedom, which Laura felt she had none. "Sometimes I wonder if I am real at all."

[identity profile] hexentotchen.livejournal.com 2016-01-14 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
Hanna couldn't regret the freedom at all. But she could regret being a ghost in her own world, without any direction. "You are real," she said, a bit more firmly. "The wolves and witches never wonder about that. Or much else. They just are. And consume things. You are a girl, maybe lost in a wood, but still. Real."

[identity profile] ungue.livejournal.com 2016-01-14 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
She didn't know what she was quoting exactly, but it resonated with her, if only a bit. "Maybe. I need to find out. I need to know if I have a soul at all."

[identity profile] hexentotchen.livejournal.com 2016-01-14 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
Not so much a quote, as a general attitude, based on growing up with an encyclopedia and a book of fairy tales for reading material. And on calling Marissa 'the Witch' her entire life.

Erik had done a few things right without planning them first.

"Maybe you will find out here." Hanna tilted her head back against the couch. "It's a good place for finding out things."

[identity profile] ungue.livejournal.com 2016-01-14 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
The one fairy tale she knew was too close to her life, so.

"It is", she conceded. She didn't know if it would help her, but she hoped so. And then. "I have never gone to school before, so at any rate, I should learn from this."
