Fifth floor common room, Saturday afternoon/evening

After yesterday's class on propaganda, a light had gone on for Jalian. This was how one person could change more than just their surroundings. She'd largely ignored movies and TV before, but now she was curious.

So, she was sitting in the common room, watching TV. She had a bowl of popcorn and was frowning at the screen trying to pick out which parts were stupid and which might be some form of propaganda.

So far the judgment had mainly come down on "both". For just about everything.

"It's because society tells them they're right all the time," Raven said. "They never have to learn to second guess themselves, so they lose out on valuable critical thinking skills."

Kathy had trained Raven well in the basics of kyriarchy, oh yes.

"They definitely need to be challenged more. But sometimes all you have the energy for is to roll your eyes and ignore them instead." Raven was doing that more and more these days, including to her own brother. Not that Charles could tell. He couldn't read her mind from the past, and he didn't have a videophone that fit in his pocket. "So. What sorts of messages is the TV trying to sell you on?"

Raven tilted her head thoughtfully. "That's probably not propaganda, then," she decided. "Propaganda has to have a deliberate political message. Men being smart has just been accepted forever. That's not political, that's just culture. Now, if he was a black guy, that might be political. Or if he's gay. Or trans. Or a woman. You can tell it's political if people on the internet send badly spelled death threats over it."

Raven shrugged. "I can find something else for us to make fun of, but I'd rather sit and talk than actually watch anything."

[sure thing!]
