1st Floor Rec Room, Monday Evening
'Somehow' (Kathy was blaming Dante), dinner at El Burrito Loco had involved not one but several alcoholic flights for them to share: it had started with a cerveza flight with appetizers, turned into a sangria flight before their entrees had come out, and finished up with a tequila flight right before they'd finished eating. It was the tequila flight that had done it; they had been just fine after the sangria, but the shots of tequila, even when divided between the three of them, had sent them right over the edge from 'pleasantly buzzed' to 'gigglng and tipsy.'
The trip home hadn't sobered them up much, which was why they'd somehow ended up in the first floor Rec Room instead of heading up the stairs to the third floor. It was also why the discovery of a fully-functioning karaoke machine was pounced on with delight. Normally, Kathy would have been all over the DDR machine in the corner, but karaoke was a much, much better idea--for one thing, there was far less movement involved.
"We are doing this," she informed the guys, plugging the machine in and pulling out the track listings. There were an insane number of tracks from all over the world. Kathy was shocked to find songs listed by prominent K- and J-Pop artists, as well as the standard fare of Broadway, 50s ballads, and 70's rock. "We are absolutely doing this. In fact, Dante, I challenge you to an 80s power ballad-off right now."
The first floor of the Dorms was in for a very long, very musical night.
[Dante and Anders modded with permission, post very definitely open for anyone who wants to come in and sing! Beat the Mondays with secondhand karaoke!]

She also chose something , but with a bit of 50's doowop to it. "Beat this, Ringo!"

It made Ringo want to come back with something that made her sound like she could sing. Sure, it was kind of fighting on Kathy's turf, but she had to at least take a swing at it, right? So she keyed up her next song.
"Beating that is easy," Ringo shot over at Kathy with what was pretty obviously false bravado. Time to slow things down a bit.

Time to slow down a bit? No worries--Kathy could match her
insane dress for insane dressbeat for beat. Picking a song where there were plenty of long notes for her to hold and throw a lot of power behind, Kathy started on an old favorite.no subject
Well, it was obvious that Ringo wasn't going to win on the power of her voice. But that was okay, she had another plan. Faster, upbeat. Something she could dance to. After all, with the right song, energy and enthusiasm were what mattered.

"I could smacktalk..." Kathy said. "Orrrr I could just jump right to kicking your ass!"
Hmmm, which should it be? "Heyyyyy, Let's go! Let's go!"
no subject
"Not bad," Ringo allowed grudgingly. "But I'm still totally going to win."
Time for more upbeat singing with a bit of dancing
and more ridiculous dressesthrown in.no subject
"Hi praise from a sore loser!" Kathy said. "But I think I'm gonna slow it back down again." Of course, slowing it down didn't mean keeping it slow.
That's not a dress, that's a sloppy-drunk rainbowno subject
"Slow it down? I think you mean boring it up." Real clever dig, Ringo! You keep that up.
"But if you want to do things slower, I can manage that."
And you ain't seen nothin' yet.no subject
Ringo, why are you wearing a cake?Kathy had to take a few seconds to catch her breath after the speeds she'd hit with that song. "Yeah," she panted. "Boring. ...If you...say...so."
Fortunately, Ringo's song gave her plenty of time to relax and get her breathing under control. It also let her pull up a chair and sink down into it to prepare for her next song. She didn't even bother to trade insults, just gave Ringo a slow smile and started to sing.
Hey, Ringo, remember that crush?
no subject
Don't be jealous, Kathy! Your own wardrobe was, you know, fine. A bit boring, maybe, but fine.Oh, Ringo remembered. She definitely remembered. It wasn't fair, but at least Kathy probably wasn't doing it on purpose?
Even after the song was over, she was kind of staring. Expression slightly blank. Maybe imagining a bit. She might remember that they were in the middle of a competition in a bit.

Ringo had not even SEEN the horrors Kathy's wardrobe had once unleashed! No, not on purpose. The bit at the end where she just fell to her knees was perhaps a little over the top and calculated, but she'd been doing that pretty much all night.
"Nothing to say, Ringo?" she teased. "Obviously better performance got your tongue?"
no subject
"Um." Wait, what? Oh! Right.
"Oh, no! I was just, er, in shock at how bad that was?" Funny how those words didn't match up with Ringo's expression. At all.

She quickly punched in her next selection. Again, something slower. She needed some time to get her thoughts together properly.

LOOK! Clothing approaching normal!Kathy's foot tapped along with the beat, and she swayed a bit along to the song. Ringo really did have an excellent voice. Forgetting they were competing, Kathy clapped for her when she was done. "Pretty good, kohai," she said. "I mean, I'm glad you're finally trying to give me something approaching competition."
no subject
Don't worry, it wouldn't get any more normal! And now Ringo was just giving Kathy a Look. It was practically cheating to actually sing so well, Kathy. You should know that!
But that was okay. Ringo had her next song planned already. But before she queued it up, she made sure to walk Kathy through the chorus' dance moves, then she got started.
Dancing was way more her speed, anyway.
no subject
Did she have to wear the matching dress? It really did go against the spirit of karaoke, didn't it? Sorry, Ringo! It was hard being so naturally talented!
But Ringo had stumbled over something that Kathy couldn't do, at least not with this current level of inebriation. Trying to keep up with the dance, doing all the little hand motions in the correct order--her brain just refused to absorb it and she spent the whole song waving when she should have been pointing, pointing when she should have been making little arcs in the air, and making the arcs when she really should have swinging an invisible lasso.
And, of course, the last, like, half of the song was just that, no singing, so Ringo could watch Kathy fail spectacularly.
no subject
Hey, there had to be time for a costume-change. The dress she was wearing was way too normal. And Ringo may have been giggling as Kathy tried. She half-thought the other girl would get better with repetitions, but it looked like Kathy was just finding new ways to do things wrong.
"You doing okay?" Ringo asked, trying to hide her smirk as the music finally faded out.
no subject
She grabbed for the book, intent on finding a song that would make Ringo pay.
no subject
Ringo was lying.
Ringo could not have danced so well after a flight of tequila. Ringo could not have danced at all after a flight of tequila. She'd totally be unconscious.
no subject
"You say so," Kathy said, choosing something nice and easy. Slow, pretty, and best yet? No choreography.
no subject
And then, when Kathy was done, she pouted.
"It's not fair," she muttered.
no subject
no subject
That wasn't supposed to be one of your superpowers, Kathy!
no subject
It did, however, magnify ego.
