Kathy was back from the dead.

Kathy was back from the dead, and that made everything else in Anders' life seem ... a little bit mundane. Not bad, mind you, but it was a tiny bit odd to be on the dorm couch nibbling on toaster waffles and watching a marathon of a reality show about a British nanny when somebody on the island had beaten death itself.

On the other hand, what was he supposed to do? Stalking Kathy was hardly an option. So he'd sit here with his waffles and the brats on TV and pretend he knew how he felt about any of this.

"To make people feel happy those aren't their children," Anders said, flashing a grin over his shoulder, deciding not to explain that they weren't nobles right then, "and toaster waffles. There's a box in the freezer if you want some."

"Oh, well, in that case, consider it a success," Hyacinthe said with a shudder. Wandering over to the freezer, he attempted to figure out what a toaster and a waffle were from context. "Anyone back home saw this and no one would light a candle to Eisheth again."

"Is that your fertility god?" Anders asked, padding over to the kitchen and pulling yellow box out of the freezer. "And do you know how to use the toaster? Sorry, I forget I had to learn."

"Less a god and more a...patron saint?" Hya said, hoping that was the right word. "She is one of the One God's angels. But otherwise, yes. D'Angelline women light candles to her to open their wombs. Until they do, they cannot have children."

Which was half the reason Hyacinthe had been so confused by the notion of 'safer sex' when he'd first arrived.

"And I'm not sure what a toaster is!" he said cheerfully. "Though now I'm guessing 'tis not a thing that stays in the freezer."

He was learning!

"Wait, so you don't have to be careful not to get anybody pregnant?" Anders asked, with some envy. "We have potions and such, but the best way I know at home is not sleeping with girls."

Bisexuality: Fun AND practical.

Chuckling slightly, he reached past Hyacinthe to show him the silver toaster. "It's plugged in," he noted. "So all you have to do is drop in two waffles, turn the dial to medium, and press down the lever on the side. And then wait. And find the syrup."

He did all that as he talked.

"But then you miss out on the fun of sleeping with girls!" Hyacinthe protested, watching Anders' arcane process. He still wasn't sure about these 'waffles' but he was fond of easy food. "But yes. Girls back home don't get their menses until they light their candle. I had no idea other practices were necessary before coming here."

"You can find other ways to have fun," Anders said, and winked. "No, but so it was all new to you? All the fumbling around with little pieces of rubber must seem incredibly awkward."

It had been for him, and Thedas at least had condoms -- even if they weren't common outside brothels.

"I had no idea what was going on," Hyacinthe said with a laugh. "We haven't any kind of illnesses of that nature, either. No complement of sailors or soldiers or merchant caravan would be complete without and Eisandine healer or chirurgeon to heal up anything anyone gets outside of Terre D'ange's borders."

"Recreational sex with no risk," Anders said wistfully. "We aren't quite there at home, I'm afraid. So are your people ever faithful?"

Hyacinthe looked surprised and then a little offended. "Of course!" he said. "Our motto is love as thou wilt. The kind of relationship people share is determined by them. I've yet to truly be in love, so I don't bother with monogamy. That may change do I fall."

Unless he and Phedre got together. In which case it was unlikely the Queen of Courtesans would expect fidelity.

"Why were you?"

"Why was I what, faithful?" Anders asked, looking embarrassed for having offended Hyacinthe. "For the same reason you just said. I was in love and it seemed like the right thing to do."

He'd been faithful to Karl as well as Nathan, plus or minus a few playful kisses. With Kathy, the whole question had been more complicated.

"Sorry if that was a rude question."

"Only because you sounded like faithfulness was a foreign concept," Hyacinthe said, giving him a nod of forgiveness. "Why wouldn't it be?"
