Breq had ice cream and tea.
She knew quite a few Radchaai who would complain about the tea; for a start, it came in small paper bags, and was, as far as she could understand, made directly in a cup. She found it amusing to imagine the horror some of her officers would have expressed at the mere thought of it.
It was actually quite bad. Not that she cared.
The ice cream, on the other hand, was good. Not that food generally was important to her, but the bice cream definitely was good. Although it didn't go that well with tea.
She was sitting on the couch in front of the screen that showed entertainments. There were quite a lot to choose from, but she found most of them rather strange. Not that she wasn't unfamiliar with the stories of different cultures. Many of them remained after annexations, even. But still: Creatures drinking blood from you is sexy. The idea of an epidemic turning most of the people into cannibalistic corpses seemed to be a major fear. Spaceships were just machines. Spaceships who were not machines were evil. She actually took a little bit offence to the last one. Then there were the love stories. There was a lot of fixation on gender and marriage. And then there were the really strange ones where people were put somewhere together and then they dropped off one by one. It reminded her of the song about a thousand eggs, and without thinking about it, she began humming that song.

Tip shrugged and shook her head. "Nah, not really. I watch stuff on Netflix sometimes, but I'm more of a book person. Network TV is usually pretty terrible."

She added: "Would you like some tea?" And then: "Ice cream?"

"Tea and ice cream. Breakfast of champions," Tip said, smiling. "I'd love some, thanks.
"I'm pretty sure daytime network TV is just for, like, housewives and toddlers. Netflix is a website that provides shows and movies whenever you want to watch them, instead of on some broadcast schedule. Way more convenient."

She got up from the couch to get another cup - there was nothing resembling a proper tea set here, but Breq wasn't that bothered.
"So you read? Do you write too?"

If you asked Tip's other alien friends, they'd say most of the time the things Tip said resulted in several more questions.
She nodded. "Yeah, I love writing. I want to be an author when I grow up."

"You do? What do you write?"
She hoped it wasn't that kind of teenage poetry that some of her very young lieutenants had enjoyed writing, but Tip didn't come across as someone likely to write in that style.

"So far, mostly graphic journals. Like . . . do you have comic books where you're from? I send them home to my best friend. In his culture, comics are basically the favorite form of literature, so we got into the habit of writing about our adventures that way. He's a way better artist than I am, though."
