2nd Floor Common Room, Wednesday Morning

Was something scheduled to happen today? Owen didn't have a clue! He had been here for all of several days and he'd only gotten attacked by anything the measely once, thanks for that, Aphra. He appreciated the vastness of the amount of free food available here, so far, and the relative quiet of having only one roommate and a decent roof over his head.

It was going to get boring. He was well aware of that. But not today.

No, today he was taking full advantage of his newfound luxury.

"All right, I have no idea what at least half of these things are," he said gleefully, eyeing the various canned food products he'd removed from the fridge and placed on the coffee table in the middle of the common room. "Anyone want to help me find out?"

Sabine had popped in to grab something to eat and drink before whatever today's monstrosity turned out to be.

"Well I don't have to ask if you're new," she said.

"Sabiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiine!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Good morning!!!!!!!!!!!!! Are you, like, going to see what we're doing this summer later??????????????"

Nina was and she was pretty excited about it!

"Though, like, I hope it doesn't try to, you know, eat us like the fish did??????????????"

Nina had not actually been around for the fish-eating, but she had access to radio and no compunctions about speaking as if she had been around for the fish.

"I thought I'd go, assess the threat," Sabine joked. "I'm sure it wouldn't happen two years in a row, right?"

"I doubt the fish would happen again but, like, that doesn't stop anything else from happening!!!!!!!!!!" Nina mused, then laughed. "I'm, like, looking forward to it???????"

"The event, or this year's fish?" Sabine checked.

Nina laughed.

"Like, at this point, they're kind of one and the same, aren't they??????????? Since we don't more?????????"

"Well, I had more fun with the games than I did the fish..."

She'd hated fighting that fish.

"But it sounds like the parts with the fish, like, before were pretty fun?????????" Nina asked, looking curious. "Like, getting to modify it however you wanted????????????"

"It was. Except for how we made it angry."

That little thing.

"I wasn't there for that," Nina admitted. "But, like, that still sounds like kind of a good time to me????????????"

Like, Neclord's castle had been her idea of a fun vacation, so…

"Maybe if he'd been better to fight." Or she hadn't done as well as she thought she should have. "And I kind of ended up feeling bad for it a little."

Nina considered that.

"...why did you, like, feel bad for a giant murder fish????????????????" she ventured.

"He just wanted to be recognized," Sabine said with a shrug. "I don't know. It was a thing. I was nicer in my mural than I could have been."

"Do you know this one?" Owen asked, holding up a can of... mango chunks. "It jiggles a bit in the can, is it supposed to do that?"

"It's canned fruit," she told him. "I think when it doesn't jiggle, that's when you have a problem."

"But what kind of fruit?" Owen asked. While... using the can opener to open it. "It's like a little surprise."

"The important question is, do you want the surprise jones for you?" she asked.

[cypher_can_fly]

"That's an interesting question," Owen mused. "What if I'm an allergic? ... Ah, you wouldn't be able to tell me if I were, you say. But perhaps I have a horrific allergy to all citrus. Or perhaps people from my home 'dimension' can be easily killed by purple fruit."

He was taking this different dimensions thing in stride even if it killed him.

"I can't tell you, but I can assure you that we have a very good clinic if your throat swells up," she said.

"Will you carry me if we go there?"

Ah, there went the lid.

"I can call you a rickshaw," she says easily.

"Oof," Owen said, clasping his chest. "That hurts, it does."

"Life hurts," she said. "Got a name?"

"Owen Corley, and I am inconsolable right now," Owen sighed, dropping his hands. "And who are you, oh... murderer of hearts?"

"I usually answer to Sabine. Scared people less than being a murderer of anything," she said.

"Ah, yes, a wise decision," Owen said, nodding a lot. "How long have you been here, Sabine?"

"A year now. Which is just long enough to think you have a handle on this place, only to be completely surprised when you find out that's wrong," she answered.

"People do keep warning me for terrible and unimaginable things."

Owen, don't sound so chipper. If you sounded chipper about everything, people were going to stop believing you were, in fact, chipper.

"Terrible, not always. Unimaginable... probably," she considered. "You at least don't usually see it coming."

Nina was, like, super excited to see what today's... thing... brought with it, but that meant food first.

"Good moooooooorning!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh my gosh, Owen, hi!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

... Owen didn't usually use so many exclamation marks, but surely he wasn't the only person on the island who thought they were contagious? "Ahem. I mean, how are you doing this morning, Nina? Looking radiant as per usual."

"I'm doing fantastic, thank you!!!!!!!!!" With an extra special shiny smile for him, just for saying she looked radiant. "Today should be a great day, I'm really looking forward to it!!!!!!!! How about you????????"

"Well, I'm awake, I'm not hungry, my roommate doesn't snore, and now I'm... taste-testing." Owen put his hands on his hips. "My life could be worse."

"Aaaaaaand you're coming to the park later, right???????????" Nina asked, wandering over to peer at the coffee table. "What are you, like, taste-testing?????????????? And who is your roomie???????????"

"A large, secret, mysterious meeting in the open air I know nothing about? Of course I'll be there," Owen said. He lifted his cans. "I found... cans."

"It's going to be the best secret meeting," Nina said happily. "Are the cans, like, new to you?????????"

"Oh yes, in my magical land of whimsy, canned foods are... a fanciful dream, spoken of only in radio serials," Owen said, eyes wide.

Nina stuck her tongue out at him.

"For your information, like, some worlds don't have many canned goods!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Like hers, really.

Owen laughed, holding up two placating hands. "I'm sorry," he said. "If it's any consolation, I... don't actually know many of these? The foods, I mean."

"They, like, have a lot of weird foods here," Nina conceded, willing to be gracious. "And I'm not sure some are meant to be eaten by anyone!!!!!!!!!!"

"Can you tell me which ones," Owen said, pausing, "Before I put them in my mouth?"

She folded herself down by the table primly, and picked up one of the cans.

"I suppose so," she said, making it sound like she'd be doing him a great favour, then laughing at the ridiculousness of that. "Though weird, I suppose, depends on the person?????? Is the written language here one you're familiar with???????????"
