So the first night in the dorms had been a bit restless. Not because of noisy floor mates or anything like that. Simply the fact that his mind and body were both still literally buzzing with the excitement of being at a new school and how amazing everything seemed so far. A bit confusing in some places...but amazing nonetheless.

So Kurt had been awake for a while y the time the smell of coffee made it to his nose. And he quickly followed it to the common room where he hesitated for a moment before poking his head in.

"Ummm hi... I'm Kurt" he said with a far-too-awkward wave and smile as he walked in.

Kiem looked up from his phone. "Hi! I'm Kiem, would you like some coffee, you're new, right?"

He grinned. No need for awkwardness, Kurt!

"Nice to meet you, Kiem. Yes, I just got here yesterday." He gave Kiem a smile and nodded "Coffee sounds amazing right now to be honest!"

And sorry Kiem, he's still trying to get used to the whole people not reacting badly when he walks into a room.

Kiem poured a mug of coffee and offered it to Kurt.

"There's probably milk in the fridge but I'm not sure if it's expired. So, who's your roommate? And your big sibling? Do you know which classes you're taking yet?"

Kurt took the mug with a grin as Kiem spoke.

"I'm rooming with Guillermo. He's also new this semester. I think he's really cool so I'm glad I got him as a roommate! Met Astrid, my big sis yesterday at the picnic too."

Kurt paused for a moment as he glanced at the refrigerator and then reached out with his tail and pulled open the door, grabbed the milk and lifted it out before shutting the refrigerator door again. It wasn't like his tail was something he was going to be able to hide for very long, even if he tried. And it was practically like a third hand to him after all.

"My Professor back home signed me up for most of my classes this term" Kurt continued as he turned his attention to the coffee for a moment. "I have MythBusting, and a community cooking class today. Then I have a Books vs Movies class, a evil galactic empire one, then weaponry, legends of..... Hyrule think it was called, photography, and a health class. What about you?"

Kiem said. "I'm only taking Home Economics and Drama this semester. Evil galactic empire class? So, is it about evil galactic empires or how to create them or destroy them or, wait, I guess you don't know that yet, right?"

"I think the full name of the class was How to Dismantle and Destroy Evil Galactic Empires or something like that" Kurt said as he put the milk away and turned back to Kiem. "But I guess in theory you have to at least kinda know how to build an evil empire before you can know how to destroy one?"

"Do you?" Kiem said. "I mean, I suppose you should know something about them unless you just plan to blow them up, but I suppose they're evil galactic empires for a reason, so that's probably hard."

He sighed. "My mother is a general, she would roll her eyes at me right now."

"Oh really, a general?" Kurt said in interest. "Here or... some other world?" he asked a bit hesitantly, still trying to work out exactly how all the timeline and other world meshing actually happened here.

"Oh, on Iskat. It's another universe."

He assumed Kurt's question meant someone had told him about that sort of thing.

"I don't know anything about military stuff. I think she might have tried to sign me up on a class on The Art of War last semester, but it turned out to be mostly pacifist. It was a great class."

"Not big on the fighting and all myself really" Kurt offered with an understanding nod. "It was hard back home. Most people don't like us Mutants. They are afraid of us and usually end up being attacked by angry mobs more often than not. You kinda learn to walk away and ignore it to an extent because otherwise you would be getting into fights every other day. But my faith dictates to not kill so that's something I always try to take very seriously."

"That is really unfair!" Kiem was stating the obvious of course. "I know people can be cruel. A mutant? So you are religious?"

Kiem had never paid much attention to the sects on Iskat, although he formally belonged to one, as everyone did. He knew that his interests were more superficial, and Kurt must be a very serious person.

"Mutants are what people like me, people with special abilities and certain differences, are called where I'm from" Kurt explained.

"And I was raised Catholic, so that is something I still follow. For me at least, it's a big part of dealing with... all this" he said giving a vague wave to himself.

"But what about you? What's it like back home for you? Back on... Iskat was it?"

"Iskat is a planet. And and empire, although not an evil one, unless you want to call my grandmother evil, which is really unfair, although she's quite scary."

The scariest person Kiem knew.

"She sent me here because I made a bet that I could climb the dome of the shrine, which turned out to be a mistake, and it reached the newslogs. They like anything to do with the royal family, so being here is a bit of a relief in some ways."

He didn't always bring up being royalty, but on one really cared much when he did, so he assumed Kurt wouldn't either.

"I guess even royalty can get tired of all the stares and attention" Kurt said. "Feels good to be able to just... be yourself at times."

"This is a really good place to just be yourself," Kiem said, then took a sip of coffee. "But you have been warned about the weird things happening, right?"

"You mean the different timelines and universes and all that? Or... something more? I know some people at the picnic were ~~handwavely~~ talking about things like marshmallow snow, semi-sentient squirrels, people getting trapped in a hole or something, and a few other odd things. Does... does that sort of thing happen often here?"

"Yes, a lot, especially last month, and some things are even scary. And then you can turn into an animal. I turned into a rabbit a while back, luckily my friend Sakaki looked after me or I would have eaten all my roommate's plants. But don't be worried, it always turns out fine in the end."

Turning into an animal didn't sound all that bad really... could be worse. And while he had not been in many fights or dealt with many dangerous situations in the past, the fact that they were usually short lived or temporary did make him feel better... at little.

"That's... ummmm... interesting" Kurt said after wrapping his brain around that bit of info. "Any idea when the next thing will happen?" Ya know, give the newbie a heads up?

"You can't predict them," Kiem said. "Well, some of them you can, like the December events are a regular thing."

"Keeps us on our toes I guess," Kurt said with a slight head shake. "Could be worse I guess. It's better than angry mobs at least!"

"Have you met any angry mobs?"

Kiem hadn't, but he was fairly sure Kurt was right about them.

"Unfortunately yes" Kurt said. "Even back at my old school. It's... it's actually why I was sent here to Fandom High. I was trying to hide that I was a Mutant. But when I got found out, well... it didn't go well. At all."

"I'm sorry to hear that," Kiem said. "At least no one here will care about that."

Considering there were all sorts of people here he was quite sure that wouldn't happen.

"Unless someone prejudiced invade but then they will face an angry mob."

"Yeah, it's really been amazing here so far!" Kurt said with a grin. "It's already been better than I could have imagined... even with all the weirdness evidently being a thing" he added with a small laugh.

"It's usually worth it," Kiem said. "So, what are you interested in?"

"I really enjoy reading and watching movies now that I am able to really get into it... well the movies bit. Growing up we didn't have TV so I grew up reading tons of books" Kurt explained. "Growing up we lived out in the country so I spent a lot of time outdoors and in nature. This past year I've been at the Academy studying with the Professor and the other Mutants back home. I...I'm kinda between hobbies right now I guess" he said thoughtfully. "What about you? What all is there to do here on the island?"

"I like all of that," Kiem said. "Well, maybe not reading. But movies. And, nature, well nature can be a bit dangerous on Iskat, with the wildlife, but I've done hiking school trips. Oh, and dart car races."

And just hanging out with people ~~although the player has failed to make him do that.~~

"Oh dart car races sound fun!" Kurt replied. "And that's cool the school does hiking trips and such. I haven't been around the ocean much at all until recently so I really love the beaches here and all. Can't wait till its warm enough to actually go swimming!"

"It's a bit sad that there are no dart cars here. But I'm sure there are other things. Do you know anything similar?"

He was from Earth, after all.

"And oh, I meant hiking in my previous school. Not here. There's the preserve though, I suppose. Swimming? Do you think there are dangerous animals in the water?"

"I've seen similar races and such a while back. They were really cool to watch though! And for swimming, there might be some critters in the water ~~like a huge sharkman~~ but I'm sure they are safe enough since I haven't seen any signs or anything warning anyone to not go swimming. We had a big pond on our property back home in Germany, so I grew up swimming and have really missed it."

"What's Germany like?" Kiem asked. "And where is it?"

Studying Earth geography hadn't been his top priority.

"Germany is part of Europe, all the way across the ocean from where we are now" Kurt said as he dug his phone out of his pocket. After awkwardly fiddling with it for a moment (because damn phones aren't meant for hands like his) he pulled up a map and showed Kiem.

"Germany is great. There's a little of everything there. You have mountains and woods along with big cities. There's even some beaches too. I love the food there too, so many spices and flavors. The food is probably one of the things I miss the most. But what about you? What was it like there? I've never known anyone from an entirely different world before!"

"Iskat is... It's supposed to be cold, since everyone from other planets are always freezing. And complaining about the wildlife. I don't see that of course, I've never lived anywhere else before I came here."

He thought for a moment.

"It was terraformed centuries ago when people first arrived, I don't think that happened to Earth. Or did it?"

"I don't think so," Kurt said after a moment's thought. "Though I know at least back in my Earth there was still a lot of debate about how things were created and how the Earth came to be... so who knows" he said with a slight shrug. "I mean other worlds and planets and civilizations actually exist. That is something I never thought would be possible."

"It's complicated, I suppose," Kiem said. He drank some coffee then gestured towards the tv.

"I was about to watch something. Want to join me?"

"Oh, I'd love to!" Kurt said with a grin as he refilled his cup. "Thanks, Kiem!"
