Around the Dorms and on the Roof

Charlie had all but promised Graham that she would do something big on Thursday for him to report on for Friday's radio. Which was why signs went up all over the dorms.

IMPROMPTU JAM SESSION ON THE ROOF

Thursday late afternoon, till whenever we're done

Bring an instrument, your voice, or just come hang out and listen.

Pizza will be provided for dinner (Plus some lightly charmed pies!)

BE THERE OR BE SQUARE

Later on, of course, Charlie would be on the roof with her guitar and mandolin ready to entertain - and hopefully be entertained as well!

Libby didn't think she was much of a singer, and she probably didn't even have much rhythm for even clapping, but she couldn't see the flyers on her way back to her room after her clinic shift and not want to go check it out.

The real question was whether or not to bring the recent be-pugged Jo along with her, especially after her discussion with Kurt earlier, but she figured Jo would enjoy this, too, even if she was a dog, and brought a spare blanket to keep around her, just in case she turned back tonight.

"Libby!" Charlie said cheerfully. "I'm glad you came! I promised Graham I'd do something exciting that he could report on tomorrow and this is what I came up with."

"A music night on the roof does sound like it would be pretty exciting to report on," Libby noted with approval.

Even though she knew it didn't take much for her to find something exciting, so maybe she wasn't the best judge of that.

"It's sure a lot of fun, even if no one else wants to join in," Charlie said. "First I was just going to come in here and sing and play on my own and then I thought, why not invite people to come along?"

She looked around at the roof and the view. "I don't know why I haven't been playing up here all along. It's a great place."

"I don't think I've ever even been up here," Libby admitted, head tilting a little as she followed Charlie's gaze out over the island. "The view here is even better than the one at the top of the lighthouse, although that's pretty impressive, too."

She'd admit, to herself and herself alone, probably, that the lighthouse had a few other things going for it at the time, as well.

"Do you think the sound will carry?" she wondered. "That people down in the town might be able to hear the music, too?"

"Oh! I've never been up in the lighthouse," Charlie said. "That sounds awesome! I bet the view is pretty sweet there."

She considered the view and the question. "I imagine it will carry. Certainly it will if we want it to. There's a charm for that. I could make it heard for quite a ways."

"Kurt took me up there once," Libby explained, wondering if her cheeks had gone as pink as they felt. "To practice his porting. It really is an amazing view, I'm always so stunned by just how vast everything really is, you know? How much of a world there really is out there..."

And now she knew her cheeks were pink, but for an entirely different, exhilarated reason, and she turned to Charlie with an excited grin.

"So, what do you think you'll play?"

Charlie registered the blush, but just smirked a little, honestly happy for Libby. "It is an amazing world out there. I think we should all get out there and explore it."

She strummed a random thinking type chord. "I've been a bit partial to Celtic music lately, but I'm willing to entertain any suggestions."

"I don't really know much music," Libby admitted, more apologetic than embarrassed, although there was definitely both in there, "except for maybe church songs and David Bowie."

Which was quite the divergence in genres, yes...

"I know some churchy stuff," Charlie said with a smile. "And I do a pretty decent 'Space Oddity'."

TJ was excited about this; it sounded like a lot of fun. So here she was, waving and grinning at Charlie.

"What brought this on? Not a complaint!"

"Told Graham I'd do something interesting in the dorms for him to report on tomorrow, so... I thought this would be interesting." Charlie grinned at her. "Ready to jam?"

"Absolutely!" TJ grinned. "And say hello to Graham tomorrow, squirrels!"

"Woo hoo! Graham is awesome!! Don't forget that part, squirrels!"

Charlie was happy to sit and play and sing till the cows came home, but she sure hoped she'd have some company!

TJ had drumsticks, but no drums. She looked around for anything that might make a good sound.

Charlie came up beside her. "There's some old, looks like flower pot things over there. Maybe one of those would work?"

TJ looked over there and nodded. "Can't hurt to try. Unless they explode in shrapnel or something, but I'll try not to hit them that hard." She went to grab them and set up a makeshift drum set.

"This is going to be awesome," Charlie said. "See how they sound!"

TJ got them set up in the right places and gave them tentative taps, then rearranged a few of them and tried again. They sounded...well, like flower pots, honestly, but not too bad.

She grinned at Charlie. "How's that?"

"Sounds awesome to me," Charlie said. "Let's play!"

"Anything specific, or you just want a beat?" TJ asked.

"You know 'Space Oddity'?" Charlie asked. "Libby's a Bowie fan."

"Who isn't?" TJ asked. She got the song in her head, and nodded. "I might not know it exactly, but I can get close enough."

"Then let's give it a go," Charlie said and struck up the opening chords.

TJ waited for the beat and joined it, keeping it simple at the start, then ramping up as the music did.

Charlie sang her heart out making sure she watched TJ to keep in synch , closing her eyes as they came up on the end of the lyrics to just let the music float out of her. "Here I am... floating in my tin can, A last glimpse of the world, the planet Earth is blue and there's nothing left to do..."

TJ kept up with Charlie and did her best with the flowerpots, pulling back a bit again to let Charliee take center stage. She had a pretty amazing voice.

"That was awesome!" Charlie said with delight when they'd finished. "Total high five!"
She held out her hand for TJ to high five.

"You were great!"

"High three!" TJ said, grinning and meeting her for that. "That was a lot of fun. Your voice is amazing. I should see if I can get an electronic set or something while I'm here."

"Makes eight!" Charlie said with a cheerful smack. She ducked her head a little. "Aw, thanks. Comes from singing forever. And yes, definitely get some sort of electronic set. They probably have them at Groovy Tunes. Or if not I'm sure we could order one."

"I'll have to look." TJ nodded. "And hope my roommate's chill, though I guess if it's portable enough I can come up here to practice."

"Or you could practice at Groovy Tunes. I already asked Tisarwat if people could rehearse there and they didn't mind."

"Seriously?" TJ perked up. "They really don't mind?"

"They seemed pretty cool about anything I wanted to do," Charlie assured her. "And I don't mind if you practice when I'm working."

"That definitely sounds like a plan." TJ grinned. "When do you work?"

"Tuesday," Charlie said. "It's usually pretty quiet, so feel free to come by whenever."

"Definitely!" TJ twirled her drumsticks. "Got anything else you want to give a try today?"

"Sure," Charlie said. She tapped out a beat with her foot. "If you can do this beat, I'll sing." She waited for TJ to pick it up then launched into a rousing version of 'Darling Andy'.

TJ didn't know this one, but she picked up the beat easily enough and followed along with an occasional flourish.

Charlie finished the rollicking ballad with a flourish and a yell. "Woo!"

There was pizza and various other finger foods, plus a variety of non-alcoholic drinks - though Charlie would not be at all averse to someone bringing the other kind.

There were also a (moddable) variety of pies. They were, however, lightly charmed by the Aunties and her mom so any of them might make you feel a need to call home, clean your room, make your bed, or make sure you're wearing clean underwear in case you get hit by a bus oh my God!

Once the sun starts to drop there will be lots of these.

So the world doesn't end, of course.
