Second Floor Common Room- Wednesday Afternoon

Kurt was a bundle of nervous and excited energy that afternoon. This was the day he and Libby were going to work on decorating cookies together. Not only that, they were going to have a very special instructor teach them! So, it was no wonder Kurt was looking forward to the afternoon date as he shifted around the common room kitchen.

With the focus being on decorating rather than the actual baking for this date, Kurt had spent all morning baking up several batches of sugar cookies. That was why dozens of (very moddable) cookies were on the counter, many in basic shapes and designs for maximum creativity. The kitchen was already cleaned up from the early morning baking effort and Kurt was busy setting out everything else they would need, which thankfully wasn’t a lot.

“Ok…. That’s all set and ready… cookies are cooled and ready… I think that’s everything…” Kurt muttered nervously as he went over everything.

“Kurt, stop fretting. And hold still! You’re going to wear a hole in the floor if you keep that up!”

Kurt stopped his pacing and looked over at the computer sitting on the corner of the counter, FaceTime already up and running, a smile unconsciously tugging at the corners of his mouth.

“Sorry, Mutti…” he said somewhat sheepishly as he stopped in front of the screen. “I can’t help it. I want this to be perfect for Libby.”

“And it will be. Now stop fretting and text the girl already.”

“Just… promise you won’t embarrass me,” Kurt said with a somewhat pleading smile as he pulled out his phone and started sending out a text to Libby.

“Hey Libby! We still on for cookie decorating today, right?” Oh please let that still be happening… “Got everything ready if you still want to!”

And with that done and sent, all there was left to do was wait for Libby to show up...

(Kurt is of course expecting someone, but the common room is definitely open and anyone is free to ping in for a chat or to use the area before Libby arrives in the oh so handwavey timeline XD )

Kurt's text received a reply of "Of course I still want to!" just a few minutes before Libby found a good spot to stop in the book she was barely able to pay any attention to for most of the afternoon and headed down to the common room, with that little eager excitement in her stomach that made her blush to think about. It was just decorating some cookies, that was all, it was nothing to be nervous about! Although since Kurt was going to have his mother on FaceTime to give them advice, that made it a much bigger deal than just decorating cookies, didn't it? So that made the nerves a little bit more justified, didn't it?

So she may have paused just outside the door, letting out a slow breath to prepare herself before heading inside.

"Hi, Kurt. Are you rea--" She stopped, blinking a little at all the prep work he'd done. "Oh, wow, that's a lot of cookies!"

And now no longer able to just focus on the cookies as a distraction, Libby realized she was holding her breath a little bit again, too. She let it go in an almost-sigh, with a nod, as if to bolster herself, before taking a moment to smooth out her hair and her skirt in what she hoped was a quick and subtle way that Kurt might not notice before stepping in closer to the laptop, feeling like her stomach couldn't decide if it wanted to drop down to her feet or jump right up through her mouth when she opened it to speak.

Thankfully, only words came out. No nerve-wracked stomachs.

"Hello, Mrs. Wagner!" she said, lifting a hand in a wave that seemed to retreat back before it could really fully develop. "It's so nice to finally get to meet you!"

If anything, Kurt-Cake was definitely a good distraction from Libby's own nerves, and she desperately wanted to know more about this nickname, and she may have even asked about it if it weren't for Kurt's reaction. Biting her lip against her poor attempts to keep her grin in check, her attention shifted over to Kurt with a curious quirk of her eyebrow, but, graciously, she decided to just leave it at that, and her attention shifted back to Kurt's mother on the computer.

"He's told me an awful lot about you, as well, ma'am," she said, with a small nod. "And thank you so much for your Christmas present, as well! It's almost too beautiful to use! But I really love it, it was so kind of you to think of it."

Well, then, just like that, Libby resolved to write more letters to Kurt's parents, then. Not only did it sound like they'd appreciate it, but it also sounded like they didn't mind her poor attempts to figure out how to write them in German, so more letters simply meant more practice and getting better. She was just about to mention it, too, that she'd write more (and maybe try to encourage Kurt to do the same, the meaning on that wink not entirely lost on her, especially since it felt very similar to the sort of winking joke Kurt himself might have made), until Kurt came in with the very clear attempt to sway the conversation away from that topic.

So she ducked her head, growing a little pink across her cheeks with her still-difficult to control smirk, and said, "We do have an awful lot of cookies over here, looking terribly plain without any decoration."
outofthequiver: (....fascinating!)

Libby's first instinct was to suggest blue--well, no, actually, Libby's first instinct was to defer to Kurt and ask what his preferences were, but after a brief spark of an internal debate about whether Kurt had been asking her thoughts out of politeness or out of a genuine desire for her opinion to count, she considered blue.

And then felt like that was a little too on the nose, so she went with her next choice.

"Maybe yellow?" she suggested, taking up the bag being offered. "I always feel like it's such a bright, sunny color. It's hard to look at yellow and not feel happier."

And, again, Libby felt that strong sense of uncertainty as the question seemed to bring up two possibilities pulling her in very opposite directions. On the one side was the part of her that wanted to show herself capable, especially with any task bordering on domestic, and on the other side was that deeply ingrained habit of making the menfolk feel important. One would show her value but ran the risk of appearing too independent, while the other would allow Kurt to be helpful but ran the risk of seeming coddling or that she would need the help.

And then she shook her head a little, realizing that she was making a mountain out of a molehill here, that it wasn't that complex or deep, that it was just her and Kurt (and Kurt's mother) decorating cookies and enjoying each other's company, and that's all it needed to be.

"I think I can get it," she said, finding a compromise without even having to think about it now, "but it would probably be easier with some help. We can also make some of them like sunflowers, maybe. Do y'all," her eyes shifted a little toward the computer, so that Kurt's mother knew she was including her in this question, too, "have sunflowers in Germany, too?"

"Oh, we have cornflowers in Tennessee, too!" Libby said, brightening especially after leaning in to have a look at the picture to confirm it. "They really are beautiful, aren't they? Obviously, we'll need to make some of them cornflowers, too, then."

And she felt a little bit of a blush creeping onto the cheeks at that, because, well, wouldn't you know it. Looks like she was getting her blue icing after all.
outofthequiver: (adorably amused)

[personal profile] outofthequiver 2023-01-18 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well, if we were celebrating all our homes," Libby noted, as she, too, got to work on mixing up some yellow for her icing bag, "we should do a few of them with irises on them, too. That's the Tennessee state flower, you know."

She sounded far too proud to have that knowledge to share.
outofthequiver: (i know i'm right)

[personal profile] outofthequiver 2023-01-18 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
And that would mean it was Libby's turn set down her icing and pull out her own phone, which she was proud to say she was getting much better at using, though she frowned a little when she saw that she'd accidentally swiped frosting on it when she went to open it, quickly rubbing it off with the heel of her hand, although now she had frosting there, but she'd worry about it in a second.

"Like these," she said, turning her phone toward Kurt when she felt she'd found the best picture. "They're usually purple, so we can do that color, too."

"They certainly are a bit more unique than other flowers," Libby agreed, tucking her phone away again, trying to be careful with the icing still on her wrist, but failing to avoid getting some on herself anyway, and she shook her head. "At this rate," she laughed a little sheepishly, "I'm going to have more frosting on myself than on the cookies."

"Do I smell cookies?" TJ asked as she came around the corner. "Oh, hey, dad." She snuck forward to steal a cookie, slow enough he could stop her if he wanted.

"Mm. Yummy." TJ shrugged as she bit into the first one, then thought about it as she swallowed. "Not bad. Got to go home for the holidays and torture my actual dad with pictures of you, so that was kind of fun."

She perched on the counter. "I've got our class and Creative Writing now. What about you?"

"So, living animals and long-dead animals," TJ pointed out, grinning. "Which is more fun?"
