Home from the movie theater, Charlie takes his acoustic guitar outside the dorms and sits under a tree to play.

He's not bad. In fact, he's pretty good.

"I'm Charlie." He grins.

"I've got a big brother too--he didn't take my guitars, because he can't play for shite, but he did take all my jazz albums. Tosser."

*sits down* Well, Rat left for a while, an' he jus' left everythin' behind, so I kinda took care of it. Then, when he came back, things were kind of weird for a while. Like, he didn' know where he fit, y'know? An' he'd just started foolin' around with the guitar again when I had t'come here. I figured it was a good sign, so I'd best leave him to it.

"Must've been rough, him leaving. As much as Liam and I drive each other crazy I hate not talking to him every day."

Yeah, well. It was all over a girl, o'course. *eyeroll* But we got him back, that's the important thing, right?

"Very much so.

"Where are you from?"

Flange City. S'out in the midwest. *vague hand wave* But my da's English.

"Mine too," Charlie says with a grin. "As is my mum."

*nod* Yeah, Mum's American. Never been real clear on why they settled down here instead of there. *considers for a moment*

Actually, they may have a longer police record, other side of the pond. So that'd probably explain it.

"The accent helps you get away with things, I've noticed. Americans find Brits charming, on the whole."

Now that is definitely true.

"But it's been nearly a week and I haven't gotten into trouble yet. My mum would be impressed."

I've been involved in plenty of trouble, but I haven't been called to the principal's office yet. It's almost a family record.

"I think the principal has other things on her mind than student hijinks."

That is so very squallin' true.

"To say nothing of how lax the rules are. Seems like you'd have to be really determined to break the law to get in trouble."

Yeah. I mean, we wrecked the hell out of the common room Friday night an' I haven't heard a peep about it!

"Though have you seen the janitor? Tall guy with a huge head. Reminded me of something from a haunted hosue, really.

"I think if he were upset enough he'd really let us know."

Yeah, I saw him. If I'd seen him before we raided the common room, I might've tried t'leave it a bit more intact, y'know?

"They may be going easy on us 'cause it's the first week of school. Who knows. As long as nobody takes my guitars away I don't care."

Good philosophy, that.

I should really head back in. But it was nice talkin' to you, Charlie.

"Nice talking to you too. Let me know if you ever want me to buy you a soda," he adds, grinning.
