Empty Room

*Maia makes her way to her room, she is exhausted but also in a strange way refreshed. Her talk with [livejournal.com profile] a_phale helped her see more clearly somehow. What did it matter in the grand scheme of things what happened to people who refused her help?

After a quick shower Maia crawls into bed, she looks around and realizes that whatever comes is going to come and going around trying to save the world and people who refuse to be helped only served to make Maia miserable.

With that thought Maia turns out the light very happy that people who need a key to her room have it and prays that River remembered her key tonight.

Maia's dreams turn, oddly, to something unexpected. She finds herself perched at one end of a comfortably upholstered sofa... and from behind her, River walks up and sits down crosslegged on the other cushion with a smile.

"Hey, Maia. Sorry to have been missing... did anyone get spooked when I took off like that?"

River looks confused. "From... the dream? Or the school?"

"But... Maia, I got hurt. I'm in the clinic. That's why I haven't been here the past couple of days."

"Maia, no... it wasn't your fault. I only saw what was happening because Chiana..." River bites her lip, blushing, as ephemeral images of an unclothed River presses herself against a similarly attired Chiana. The River on the sofa stares for an instant, then waves a hand at the apparition and it vanishes. "Um... yeah."

"It caught me by surprise, too. So... what's wrong? What's happened?"

"Can't save everyone all the time, Maia. I know. And sometimes, in trying to save everyone, you get hurt yourself. So you just have to do the best you can." River gathers Maia into a comforting hug.

Then, while still embracing the other girl... "Sara? Who's that?"

River pulls back to look at Maia, raising one eyebrow inquisitively. "Oh? And how'd you meet her?"

"Sara..." River blinks for a moment, then... "YOU'RE SLEEPING WITH PROFESSOR SIDLE?!?"

Had the exclamation been voiced anywhere but in this dreamscape, everyone on the floor would have likely heard.

River's silent for a moment, with the concerned expression still filling her face as she nibbles at her lip.

Then... "Well, how was it then?"

"Was it that dream where you're standing on a pyramid in sort of sun-goddess robes, and thousands of beautiful men are cheering and throwing little pickles at you?"

At Maia's confused reaction, River muses, "Why am I the only one who has that dream?"

River smiles, wistfully. "I think I know that feeling. When Chiana and I were... ah... initially going at it, the first time for me caught both of us by surprise." She sighs. "I'm happy for you, Maia... I guess I just have some concerns about getting into a relationship like that with one of your teachers."

"I'm not sure it's like that with Chiana," River says. "I mean, it is, and my gods it's great, but... I think we're both just having fun with it, and seeing where it takes us." She sighs happily, then adds, "And I think she's kind of rubbing off on me."
