River, with a stack of DVDs in her hand, slips into the common room. Might as well get some familiarity with these 80s movies before she shows them the night after tomorrow, right? She glances at the titles in her hand, then selects one, pops it into the player, and settles into a chair with the remote.

Real Genius, hmmm?

She hits play, and the strains of Carmen McRae singing fill the room.

Maia plops down on the couch next to River holding out some popcorn. "What's this crap?"

"It's a comedy, I think. Starring somebody named Val Kilmer. It's just getting started." River stares at the screen. "Oh, come on. That's got to be the weakest model of an orbital particle beam delivery system I've ever seen."

Maia looks at River and cracks up laughing. "its a movie babe" Maia sits for a minute "OH come on!! Nitrogen quarters PLEASE no coke machine in the world is gonna be fooled by that."

"Nitrogen quarters? Is that later on in...?" River breaks off, then shakes her head. "Nope, I don't want to know." She narrows her eyes at Maia and grins. "No quoting the movie fifteen minutes before the scene comes on, all right?"

*Maia gets red faced* "Sorry, I blow the end of movies a lot. Just like throw popcorn at me or something. Val Kilmer is really cute though" Maia starts to laugh and for the first time in ages is having a wonderful time even if she did already know how the movie was going to end.

"He is quite... fetching, isn't he? But what's with the things on his head?" She starts to sip at her soda against, then laughs and nearly chokes as Kilmer rattles off his if I wear them anywhere else, they chafe line.

Oh those are boing boings. And yeah, they will chafe anywhere else. *Maia pats Rivers back to make sure she can still breathe*

River coughs once, still grinning. "It's OK, I'm fine... that just caught me a little off-guard."

Maia nods still laughing. "Your so funny River" Maia cracks up laughing again enjoying watching River's reaction to the film then the film itself.

[ OOC: *facepalm* I went to check my mun account and forgot to change the users back. D'oh! :) ]

((OOC: thats ok I just sat here looking at it for a second like who in the world is that.. then I realized it was you. ))

River cocks her head, then smiles at the screen. "Oh yes... I remember classes like that. But now what..."

She breaks off, looking momentarily mortified, then says, "ICE?"

Exactly, there is no way possible that would fool a coke machine. *shakes head* it is totally nonplausable.

"No no no... in the corridor! Look at all that ice! And a sled?!?" River stares, open-mouthed. "My gods she's hyperkinetic."

Maia looks at the tv and back at River laughing her head off. "I need to watch every movie with you." Maia still laughing her ass off eats some popcorn.

"Is Kilmer wearing makeup? And the vapor could be explosive?!?" She nibbles at her lip. "This is so much better than the things they show on the Cortex."

Maia stops laughing "Cortex? Whats that a movie theatre?"

"No, no, it's like..." River gropes for an appropriate description. "Like a system-wide data-net, allowing communication and distribution of information across vast distances. And there were shows, comedic bits and morality plays and the like, shown on it."

Maia frowns "Like a computer? Like everyone hooked into it? or one that you sit and watch?" Maia has forgotten the movie for a moment as River so rarely gives information so openly about her life before school.

"Sort of, I suppose. There's something like it here, called cyberspace, I think, or 'the Web'. It's like that, only on a far broader scale."

"Oh" Maia looks slightly disappointed, she was hoping for something more spectacular then a fancy version of the world wide web. "I thought maybe they like plugged you into a computer system like that Matrix movie" Maia shudders "That movie gives me the creeps, makes me wonder if that how they did this *pointing to her head* to me. Hooking me up to something you know."

Maia stares back at the t.v. trying to concentrate on it but stealing sideways glances at her roomate as though seeing her for the first time.

"The Matrix? What's that? Did it come out in the 80s?"

no, its a newer movie. its really creepy though, all these people hooked up to machines and stuff. *shudders* very creepy.

"Huh." Despite the noncommital reply, she looks somewhat intrigued by the description.

I'll rent it so we can watch it together this week or something ok?
