River, with a stack of DVDs in her hand, slips into the common room. Might as well get some familiarity with these 80s movies before she shows them the night after tomorrow, right? She glances at the titles in her hand, then selects one, pops it into the player, and settles into a chair with the remote.

Real Genius, hmmm?

She hits play, and the strains of Carmen McRae singing fill the room.

I'm a sentimental sap, that's all

"It's a comedy, I think. Starring somebody named Val Kilmer. It's just getting started." River stares at the screen. "Oh, come on. That's got to be the weakest model of an orbital particle beam delivery system I've ever seen."

Maia looks at River and cracks up laughing. "its a movie babe" Maia sits for a minute "OH come on!! Nitrogen quarters PLEASE no coke machine in the world is gonna be fooled by that."

"Nitrogen quarters? Is that later on in...?" River breaks off, then shakes her head. "Nope, I don't want to know." She narrows her eyes at Maia and grins. "No quoting the movie fifteen minutes before the scene comes on, all right?"

*Having spent all weekend working on things in her darkroom, D'anna takes a moment to stretch her legs. She stops near the common room where a long haired girl is watching what appears to be primitive, blueprint-like sketches move across a television screen.*

"Some movie called Real Genius? A comedy, I think... they just disintegrated some guy in a wicker chair." She watches for a moment more, then... "Oh, I get it. Some high Alliance brass must want this particle-beam weaponry for some undiscernable purpose. Was there something going on back in the 80s that would justify that?"

*shrugs* Can't say really, I haven't watched that many period pieces.

That redhead guy is a bit rude isn't he? Was Einstein the guy in the wicker chair? And what does this kid have to do with any of that?

"Einstein was a significant scientific voice in the early part of the twentieth century back on Earth-that-Was... here, I mean." River considers the screen with a look of mild confusion on her face. "Oh, I see... the kid must be some prodigy." She sips from a soda, then goes on. "That's a horrible suit, though."

Marty plops down on the sofa with popcorn.

"Real Genius! Ah... classic."

"Help yourself. River's not getting the 80's wacky fun scientific comedy is she?"

"Hey!" She swats at him playfully. "I'm getting it! It's good stu--" Her eyes go wide at the screen as she smiles in astonishment. " 'It's heading for the fuel tanks'?!?"

Her mouths falls open, and she appears to be (successfully) smothering giggles. "This is so very strange."

"Shiny. I haven't seen it before, I'm afraid... as the droplets of soda on my shirt will testify." River rolls her eyes self-deprecatingly. "So... wow. Do dorms at other institutions really look like that?"

She looks as though she's considering constructing something that could be filed under "H" for "toy".

"Well most of them don't have secret passages leading from your closet to some hidden weirdos hiding place. Then again, we've got a squid living in the basement so I guess I shouldn't talk."

"Well, there is that. Lasers? Hey, shiny!" She leans forward to pay closer attention to the apparatus on-screen.

Anders comes in and, as usual, flops down on a couch, since the Perkolator was closed today.

"What's playing?"

"Real Genius. I'm hoping they'll get bored and move on to 'Better off Dead'. Popcorn?"

"We can play that one next." River reaches over and picks up the case for Better Off Dead. "Hey... why does this guy look like you?"

"Hey, thanks." Anders grabs a handful of popcorn and crunches away at it, watching the screen with a confused expression. "Man, I'm so lost here."

Xander slips in and takes a seat near the door just as the Jiffy-Pop house looks set to explode. He gives what he thinks is a subtle nod to River though in reality it looks like he's either having an allergic reaction to bad shellfish, or a petit mal seizure.
